I forgot to add a 2nd round pick. People in Edmonton are saying maybe Kassian and a 2nd for Faulk. Remember, he is a salary dump for Carolina.

Big offseason
Edmonton trade doesn't make sense for the Oilers. Cammalleri is a UFA, Edmonton won't be resigning him, and no team will pay him more than 1m next season. I doubt VGK will want him for even 1m. Edmonton is short on RHD not LHD and we have a couple good unproven goalie prospects already so we aren't trading Montoya and Strome for that. Especially considering it seems Edmonton views Strome as our 3C going forward. Probably for around 3m a year.

Fixing the Oilers
Instead of the Draisaitl trade (which makes no sense for either team) to free up cap space, trade Russell in summer 2019 after he provides his trade list. Maybe you have to incentivize a team to take him by throwing in a prospect or pick. Not sure what you did with Benning but he definitely has value as a 3rd line RHD. If Sekera rebounds next year, he will have decent value, not negative value.

Draft Lottery Win
If this could happen it would be a great team, but I'll still say the problems I see with it.
- Aaron Dell is probably worth more to the sharks then what you offered. He's one of the best backups in the league.
- Khaira is a better and cheaper (atleast for next year) 4C then Girgensons.
- If you bridge Nurse, you are atleast a million too little. My guess is bridge 3 or 4 years at 4.167m.
- Do you think Sekera will waive his NMC to go back to Buffalo? and that Buffalo will trade to get him back? If we keep Sekera for another year he will hopefully get back to his pre-injury self, then when he gives his trade list in summer 2019 he will hopefully have more value then he does today.
- Grabner will want 3m+ and longer term
Basically, scratch the buffalo trade, then you wont have the money for JVR.

IS there such a thing as a sure shot play off team?
I don't think Sekera will waive his NMZ, so trading him for cap space to sign Carlson unfortunately won't happen. I think we have to hope that Sekera regains his 2016/17 form, which thankfully it does look like he is trending up in the last couple games. If Grabner would sign for us for only 3 years and we could fit it under the cap I would go for that, especially as he is ideally a 2nd or 3rd liner, but can play ahead of Yamamoto until Yamamoto knocks him down the depth chart. The only thing I really don't like here is Draisaitl for Hoffman, despite the 1st. Draisaitl is a better 2nd line center than RNH, he is bigger and good at faceoffs. Then if we play RNH as a LW for McDavid or Drai, is Hoffman going to score that many goals than him that it is worth losing the flexibility of having an extra center? RNH is on pace for 30 goals and 57 points . The last 3 games on McDavids wing he is on pace for 55 goals and 82 points. I know thats an extremely small sample size but the point is I could see Hoffman scoring 35-40 goals on McDavids wing, and RNH scoring 30-35 goals for longer since hes younger.

Yep. Dubnyk, Yakupov (in my opinion), Hall (people saying he was a cancer in the locker room), Eberle (from one down season and playoffs) are some other notable ones I'd say. Now I hope we don't do that to Strome (blame him for not producing as much as Eberle), Sekera, and Talbot because I think they can all be good players for us. I think Lucic just gets heat because Chiarelli should have never signed him to 7x6m, he's not worth that, especially when he stopped fighting and stopped being able to make a pass.

Our winger depth in this mock is worse than it currently is. Two 3rd liners for McDavid to play with next year? Kassian playing above 4th line? Losing RNH is essentially losing a top 6 winger in Drai or RNH. Granted, you did improve our defence IF Sekera has a bounce back season.

Yeah I'm torn on the issue. I just don't want to see us trade RNH, picks, and prospects for RHD where there is a chance we won't need one in a year or two, and when there is a strong chance Chiarelli will lose the trade based on his past history with big trades.

Doesn't make sense to trade for a top 6 RW when we have Yamamoto and Puljujarvi.
If we keep Lucic he is a 3LW. So lets say we draft Zadina or Tkachuk, we still need 1 more top 6 LW if you trade away RNH.
I am not convinced we should trade for a RHD when Bear will likely be ready for the NHL in 2019-20 and none of Nurse, Larsson, Klefbom, and Benning are at the age defensman usually peak. I think we go one more year with the same defence then re evaluate summer 2019. Summer 2019 we can trade Sekera and Russell without them having to waive their NMZ... and we will see where Jones and Bear are at. Also, Sekera has negative value right now, let him rebound from his injury and he will have positive value. If he reaches his peak he could probably net us a 1st round pick from a contender (see McDonagh trade).

I like it. I see Yamamoto being the best fit as 1RW with McDavid, and Grabner being a good 3RW. I also hope we get Brady Tkachuk or Filip Zadina, and that they end up taking over the top 6 LW with RNH. But for lets say Zadina and Yamamoto's first year in the NHL, the 3rd line would be good for them, and then 19/20 they bump Maroon and Grabner down to the 3rd line.

News from Bob Staufer
You probably can't afford Halak and Grabner unless the cap is closer to 82m because you haven't accounted for the healthy scratches, but I think you're more just focused on the D. I am also hoping we keep close to the same roster. The reason I think it is a good thing is because Sekera and Russell provide their trade lists in the summer 2019. If Russell opens up his trade list early, then great lets trade him. Regarding Sekera though, I would prefer him to regain his form over the 18/19 season, so that he actually has positive trade value for us when he provides his trade list. I also don't think we use Bear as a number 7 D. Let him develop by playing 25min a night in the AHL running the top power play unit.
I also think none of Nurse Larsson Klefbom and Benning have reached their full potential yet. So 18/19 season we see how those 4 develop. Summer 19 we trade Sekera and Russell. Summer 19 training camp we evaluate Jones and Bear making the jump to the NHL. If everything goes well we would be looking at:
Nurse Larsson shutdown pair
Klefbom Bear pucking moving pair
Jones Benning 3rd line pair
Possibly switch Benning and Bear.
If things don't pan out with any of the D by the end of summer 2019, thats when we sacrifice draft picks/prospects to make moves to position ourselves as serious contenders.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Fleurdelille</b></div><div>Alot of good feedback. I think if we re-sign Cammalleri, or even get someone like Grabner we should not need to count on Aberg panning out. Slepyshev plays RW now but is decent on the left.
Bear really seems like a hit or miss. He is not strong defensively so he needs bring alot of offense. If we get a player like Boqvist it's not unimaginable that he'd put up 40 points by the time he's 21 (thinking Klingberg). I'm hoping Bear reaches his ceiling, seems like he's getting offensive starts + PP opportunities atm so that'll help his game</div></div>
Yeah right now I am hoping that one of Benning or Bear improve enough to play on a good 2nd pairing on the right side (I know Benning is a LHD but he usually plays on the right side). I think both of them have the potential. Benning has been in a bit of a sophomore slump, but based on his performance in his rookie season, you would think his potential is a #4 defenceman on a good team. I would like to wait on Benning and Bears development before trading picks/prospects for a RHD. But I agree with you, Boqvist is probably an even better bet to becoming a top 4 RHD, so it wouldn't hurt drafting him and then end up trading one of the 3 of them.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LobbysOilers</b></div><div>we dont like russell and hes got one less year, also we could use a RHD who isnt good more than a LHD who isnt good</div></div>
Speak for yourself lol. I don't know anyone who doesn't like Russell. Most people think he was paid a bit too much, but that is most of Chiarelli's signings, and not on the player. Russell also shows more heart then almost anyone on the Oilers on a nightly basis throwing his body in front of every shot. Fancy stats don't show him in good light, but hockey analysts always talk about how he plays a different style, he often gives the other team the outside, lets them take a bad angle shot and blocks it, and defends the slot really well so he gives up less grade A chances and more grade B chances. Russell is a good 3rd pairing defenceman, and can cover as a #4 if he plays with a good #3. He also does not get injured a lot. He provides his trade list in summer 2019, where he should have some value on the market. Why trade him now for another bad contract with Bear quickly coming up as a good RHD, who was named the best defensemen in Junior last year?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Banman73</b></div><div>If JT will sign with the Oilers and we have to move Lucic to clear salary...I kinda think it's a no brainer to make that deal. However, because of salary we still might have to trade RNH and we could probably get a 1st back anyway.
You have to think of it this way:
Lucic + 1st and a 2nd to Buffalo
Edmonton gets a prospect and signs JT. I think JT is worth that easily lol.</div></div>
Depends on what the cap goes to next year. We could probably keep RNH if the cap goes to 80-82m. We might not be able to sign Grabner to a 1 year 4m deal. I overpaid him so that he might accept a 1 year deal because in 2019-20 Puljujarvi Talbot and Khaira will all likely require raises. Slepyshev and Kassian are fine alternatives to Grabner, then we can keep the Nuge. The biggest potential downfall to this team is Sekera and Talbot not having bounce back seasons, and the rookies not being ready for the show. But McDavid and Tavares are good enough that those rookies should have no problem in putting up points.

I like it! I like Khaira as 4C, but if you could sign someone as a really good PKer and good at face-offs that would be better. I would rather trade Kassian and keep Cagguila for 1m. Save 1m in cap and I think Cagguila is more versatile and has a higher ceiling then Kassian. I would also rather keep Benning and have Bear play as the #1 Dman on Bakersfield and get 25min a night and run the 1st power play unit. Hopefully him and Jones will be ready for 2019-20 after Sekera and Russell give their trade lists in summer 2019.
In 2019-20 the D could look like:
Nurse Larsson shutdown pair
Klefbom Bear offensive start pair
Jones Benning
If you trade Benning and select Boqvist you need to hope he develops fast or keep Russell. Might be better to take a LW instead... I would just select the best player available because we are definitely short on the LW, and may or may not be short at RHD depending on Bear's development.
Considering LW, I am also not bullish that Aberg is going to be a good starter on the bottom 6 LW. Theres a reason the preds traded him for essentially a 4th round pick.
