Trading Jeff Petry to Anaheim for Futures
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoadRunner72</b></div><div>I posted almost the identical trade a few nights ago and got generally trashed for the idea (my version was Petry+Lekhonen for Comtois+1st rounder)
From my point of view, Anaheim still looks like a pretty competitive team on paper, rather than a rebuilding team. They've got a solid top end defense in their mid to late 20's (Manson, Lindholm, Fowler), a great goalie in Gibson, and some very good top 6 forwards (Rakell, Henrique, Silverberg, etc.) as well as an aging but still effective Getzlaf at center.
It seems to me like a trade that generally helps both teams, perhaps with some extra secondary pieces/picks exchanged for balance.
But there are lots of good opinions above - if the centerpiece is a 32-year old defenseman in Petry, maybe there's just too much risk and not enough value for the Ducks.</div></div>
Yes, I got this idea from you, and still think that the premise is viable. I thought at the time (and still do) that Lehkonen isn't necessary, and was trying to construct a trade that benefits both teams equally, but I think I went overboard on value to the Canadiens, and still am not convinced that even so, it's a good idea for Montreal. What struck me then, and strikes me now, is that no Montreal guys objected to your trade and only <a href="/users/Kotkaniemi15" target="_blank">@Kotkaniemi15</a> objected to mine.

You know, this was my initial inclination when I saw the earlier version of this trade (suggested by someone else). Despite the negatives from my Anaheim colleagues, I still like the idea of acquiring Petry (I'm just trying to figure out the proper cost), but I think that the real opposition comes from the Montreal side, because as <a href="/users/Kotkaniemi15" target="_blank">@Kotkaniemi15</a> says, it would seriously weaken Montreal at RD for this and next season (and eliminate any chance the Canadiens have of re-signing Petry, if they wanted to).

Where are we "rebuilding/retooling"? Forward? No. Left defense? No. Goal? No. Only place we need help is RD. What's better: Petry now and next season, or the guys we're going to draft next June, who won't be ready until 2021-2022 at the earliest?

Trading Jeff Petry to Anaheim for Futures
Thought process is right but the follow through missed a couple important aspects which should help clarify a few things.
- Petry is older and more expensive than Muzzin at time of trade.
- I don't think there is sufficient data to support Muzzin is less good than Petry and vice versa for that matter but Muzzin does have cup experience and World cup experience/pedigree.
- If Petry was traded at this TDL, it would give Anaheim the same amount of time that Toronto had with Muzzin. Not more. Muzzin is a UFA after this year.
- Anaheim's 1st is likely a lower pick than what Toronto's was headed for that year and without protection in 2021, its too much of a gamble for Ana. Looking simply at odds, this pick is likely to be much better than Toronto's was destined to be.
- Anaheim isn't a team looking to go all in like Toronto was last year.
These are all factors that would either stop a trade like this from going through or change the complexion on the trade itself.
IF Habs were shopping Petry, IMO the team that would be most in on him would be Vegas. They need a solid true Righty D. They are going all in. They have a lot of picks and prospects. They have a good enough team to win. etc

Flyers are pretty stacked with LHD with Cam York and Zamula knocking on the pro level door next season. Could be worth moving Sanheim for this return. And when you are dressing 5 rookies already think you can sacrifice some future assets.

Crazy draft scenario where MTL ends up with AL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoadRunner72</b></div><div>I'll give you an "A" for effort, but it's hard to imagine any of the bottom feeding teams giving up that #1 overall pick to start their rebuild, unless they are getting an established NHL star in return.
One young future super-star (Lafreniere) is more likely to fill the seats than a solid future second line (Poehling plus the other two middle first round picks)</div></div>
Well its Poehling, Denisenko, 7th overall (Lapierre or Lundell) and mid first. Still really great for an offer

Something New for Left D go west to the Desert Dogs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoadRunner72</b></div><div>I know what you're saying, the Coyotes likely don't want to move one of their young defensive building blocks. But Arizona offense last year was 27th in the league, and this year it sits near the bottom again (obviously it's early in the season). The defense and goaltending is solid, but without some offensive depth they're still going to have trouble making the playoffs.
I would think there is a point where the offer is too good to refuse. Maybe the Habs add a better young defensive prospect to sweeten the pot...maybe change it to Drouin and Cale Fleury. Then the coyotes get 2 young building blocks for one...</div></div>
Drouin is severely overrated. Ide like to note, arizona has played 5 games so far this year. and are averaging a little over 2 goals per game. you can win on defense and goaltending. bruins are 5-1 right now with only 16 goals scored. Look at the blues last year. they wont because of exactly that. They added a prolific scorer in kessel. give it a few games for them to develop chemistry and i think they will be middle of the pack watch out for arizona this year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cheddamonkey37</b></div><div>Can’t see mtl trading drouin for a backup goalie</div></div>
So Murray won't be a fit with Weber on the top pair? I see Montreal moving a top 6 forward who the organization was unhappy with to end the year and which will soon be replaceable by the forward prospects coming up for a #2/3D and a young backup goalie. Columbus may need to sweeten the deal with a 2020/2021 mid round pick but I think it seems fair and addresses both team needs.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoadRunner72</b></div><div>Yup. That's a significant draft jump going from #15 to #7-8. Habs would seriously consider it depending who is still available at that draft spot.
Sekera is a better rounded player than Russell, and only 1 year difference in age.</div></div>
Yeah but Russell is cheaper and actually plays instead of spending most of the season on the IR. He's also a defensive defenseman, figured pairing him with Petry would allow Petry to jump in the rush more.

My take
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoadRunner72</b></div><div>I like the ideas, and Lavoie as the draft pick is a good choice if he's available at 15.
Klefbom would likely have a much bigger impact on the success of this team than Drouin over the next 5 years, even if JD evolves to be a 30 goal scorer. Adding a UFA like Duchene compensates for any lost scoring from Drouin in any case.
Strength down the middle, on top 4 defense and in net is the key to success in this league. And these moves go in that direction. If we need to add scoring on the wings at some point 2-3 years down the road that's the easiest gap to fill with free agents or trades.</div></div>
thats basically my thinking behind this. strength down the middle and a solid D core. wingers really arent hard to find, plus we have potential top 6 wingers in the pipeline. suzuki and ylonen

He knows he needs to be better and I don't think Bergevin is ready to move him, unless this type of deal can truly be made. i agree, its just none of those wingers that you mentioned will bring in a top pairing d man to play with weber

At the draft if a guy MTL is eyeing hard is still there come EDM's pick then switch out Sekera for Russell and you'd probably have yourself a deal.

Habs ready for the playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoadRunner72</b></div><div>First 3 trades don't look unreasonable. Two good prospects plus first and second round picks for Fowler might be enough if you also take Eaves contract away ($2.1M one more year). But I don't think you can expect to send Kulikov back to Anaheim without retaining some salary (he is $4.3M for 1 more year)
I'd love to have Fowler to shelter Mete, Romanov, Kulak and other young Habs D-men over the next few years. But Anaheim won't give up a top D like that unless you pay a premium for it.
Puljujarvi's value is still higher than Evans's ceiling, so might have to add more there from MTL side.
Nice lineup though</div></div>
For Kulikov
They can try him out till the end of the season and than either trade him if gain minimum value or buy him out (he is 1.4M$ next 2 years)

Firing up the rebuild machine
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoadRunner72</b></div><div>Sorry to hear that only a month after re-signing Koskinen you're talking about buying him out before the contract is up. Maybe he'll surprise and be solid for a few years.
Nice job, you've obviously done some research on the draft picks.
I agree with the comments above about the price for Klefbom - he might be worth that on the open market but as a Habs fan I would prefer they use the #21 pick themselves (most likely an offensive LD like Thomas Harley) and be patient. Some of the younger RD prospects could also play their off-side for a bit to fill the gap in development.
Hope the Oilers can cut a deal with Ottawa to take away one of their bad contracts and create some cap space.</div></div>
I wouldn't have minded him at about $1.5M cheaper, but nearly $5M for a career .904sv% netminder is absurd, and I'm incensed that Oilers management didn't fire Chiarelli before he signed that extension AND that the group at large okay-ed the extension collectively. I'd rather run a combination of Elliot, Comrie, and Starrett into next season (45/24/11 split): collectively, that trio wouldn't cost as much as Koskinen does now.
Years of Oiler futility has shifted a lot of my attention away from professional hockey and into prospects and drafting. I tend to rely on a mix of DobberProspects and McKenzie's lists for the top-50ish, then it's a matter of using ratios of players under Central Scouting and prioritizing 17 year-olds playing in professional leagues or national teams, avoiding overagers unless they're bonafide top-100 talents, and not being afraid of a kid being under 5'10". I find it annoying that I could probably do a better job scouting these kids than the current Oilers setup.
Glad I at least got the price on Klefbom right lol
The trick with offloading crap on Ottawa is that the majority of the crap on the roster has a NMC or NTC of some sorts. Right now, Spooner and Manning could be dropped on the Sens, but I can't imagine either Russell or Lucic wanting to go there. Sekera is more manageable right now I think.

Habs Oilers Nurse
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RoadRunner72</b></div><div>Thanks for the honesty. You may be right, that he's too good to give up. But I don't think the value is all that far off. Maybe the 3rd rounder goes MTL to Edmonton instead. Essentially the Oilers get two young and relatively proven players for the price of one. They have a lot of gaps to fill with competent players, and I have no doubt Lekhonene and Juulsen are both very competent NHL players just a step down from Nurse's level.</div></div>
I think the value is pretty far off if I'm being honest. Nurse is more than a couple steps ahead of those 2 players, and Nurse seems to take a step forward every single year. I think he's without a doubt going to be Edmontons number 1 dman next year. Klef and Larsson are good, but Nurse is already on their level, and he just keeps getting better. But I appreciate your response, and I respect your opinion
