Andersen Moves on
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ODOG67</b></div><div>if doughty can land on 11 sheets with 500 points in 900 games, Petro is worth something around the same, maybe a hair less with a flat cap for the next 2 years. He has 450 points in 750 games. If anything, he's wortth the same or more than DD.</div></div>
IMO the days of paying UFAs who are their contract, such a big % of the cap is over. Kings, and Sharks must regret signing Doughty, and Karlsson to those massive deals . Even upcoming UFAs Faulk and Vlasic look like poor deals . Good RFAs are now landing a bigger contracts as RFAs some virtually UFA money . Gotta think the UFAs will be squeezed.
I would like to know what teams, have the cap to land Pietrangelo if his pay demands are met. Sure can't be the Leafs unless they decimate their lineup.
And those trades in this post...c'mon. giving all that cap to Pittsburg and NJ gives up a first rounder for one year of Andersen....ain't happening

Nylander isn’t signing for anything starting with a 7. Toronto is going to wind up trading him. They might want a top 4 RHD but you don’t always get what you want.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Because Nylander plays a position where they are at their best much sooner then D men, Pesce and Nylander are incredibly similar in terms of skill and Pesce got 19 points in 60 games, he was injured, he could easily have hit 25 and he's only getting better, and for a product of Auston Matthews, I'd be taking that if I'm Toronto. Pesce is so good and the fact your disrespecting him like this is funny.....</div></div>
I'm not saying he isn't good. He's a fine player. A guy that can pair with Rielly and not be a liability. All great things.
Here is the thing though and its where Carolina fans always get silly, Pesce is a defensive defenceman. They just don't make near as much money as two way players or offensive players. This is a fact in this league. So everyone on here keeps saying defence are worth more than Nylander, and that is true when talking about #1 defenceman. Pesce is not a #1 defenceman, on his team he's 3rd on the depth chart at the highest, some may argue he's also behind Faulk because Faulk plays a 2 way game and puts up points.
This isn't a knock on Pesce, its just the reality of the situation. On top of that, the Canes once again are in need of scoring and they need scoring way more than TO needs defence. Toronto has the 2nd best goal differential in the league and are 4th best in GA/G. They are 2nd in the conference and are doing all of this without Nylander and Matthews. If you look at all the chatter out there and all the potential deals, adding Nylander is the biggest addition anyone is going to make. It should just be TO because too many people out here think they are going to get him for a steal, and after the Hall trade, that isn't going to happen.

Dahlin is not a defensive defenseman who'll average around 20 points a year. Pesce is not Dahlin, he's a younger version of Chris Tanev, a very good player but he's not worth more than 4 million a year. So if defenceman are worth more than forwards of Nylander's talent level, then why don't they get paid the same?

Disappointing Playoffs...
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ODOG67</b></div><div>Plek goes back to MTL. This was a playoff rental to try and match up against Marchand. Matthews and Hyman are good together. what they need is to look for a better option than Nylander whose compete level is underwhelming. And Brown is just too valuable to give up. Savard might not give you the physicality they're going to need.</div></div>
Honestly Nylander was underwhelming... I was really disappointed with Kadri, JVR, Bozak, Komarov, Brown all series...
Matthew's needs someone to help drive play and set him up. Hyman is the puck chaser on that line, and Nylander is their set up skill player. That line lost a lot of mojo and Brown didn't rejuvenate that line at all.
Marner, Marleau, Dermott, Hyman really impressed me this series. Kapanen had a beauty goal tonight, unfortunate that he had a relatively quite series otherwise.
Moving forward Matthew's needs help and needs someone to motivate that line.
Marner deserves a huge pay raise. Kid is the star of Toronto in my eyes.
Gardiner needs to leave.
Plekanec with Marleau and Marner was great, kept the Marchand-Bergeron-Pasta line in check for the most part.
Leafs Vets if returning need to pull their weight. They were absent

Mathews is good but McDavid is clearly another level from anyone else in the game. You'd be looking more like Mathews, Nylander, and a first probably but what's the point in even valuing McDavid? He's obviously not even remotely available unless the price would be so ridiculous.

I've watched Bouchard multiple times this year. I really don't think he will be a top D. He is a very good passer, fairly big in size, he puts up points, but only because he played half the game.
He has a lot to work on. Not the best skater and not the smartest decision maker. He complains to the refs every single whistle too.
Because he is a RHD, he gets ranked higher than he probably should be.

This is how to extinguish a tire fire
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ODOG67</b></div><div>I have all kinds of time for intelligent, respectful feedback like this. Well articulated...
Boeser is awesome. But, Price remains not only the best goalie in the game, but among the top 5-7 players, irrespective of position. He'll steal you a round, and will do so for the next 6 years. Wingers won't steal you a series. Horvat-Boeser isn't Toews-Kane. Probably not even Matthews-Nylander. What this trade brings MTL is much needed depth and balance and an even more desperately-needed change of representation in key positions. Patches is a fine player. I dont think he is captain material. MTL needs a major shakeup from the head office to ice level, and you dont get anything close to franchise skill without moving a franchise goalie. Does the move make VAN less potent in the top 6? absolutely, it does, until their young guys like Petersson make the jump. When they do, they'd be perennial contenders with CP31 in goal.</div></div>
Let me preface this by saying, if this happened, I'd be jumping for joy. And Im a Habs fan.
Once again, you are banking on a team that hasn't been good the past little while, to trade its two best players right now who are also young, to set up everything on the back of a player(s) who haven't played an NHL game yet (Pettersson and others) on the whim that the best goalie in the world is still at his best for the next 6 years? It doesn't matter what <em>you</em> think, convincing someone to do what you asking is going to be a tough sell. (That's coming from someone who knows the Habs players well and their abilities)
Hey, anything is possible, I guess. You won't get that benefit on here though. On CF, we deal in absolutes. Because we are professionals....... and Sith lords. :laugh

This is how to extinguish a tire fire
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NickC1988</b></div><div>Stupid concept that's actually never done. Goalies don't get drafted until late 1st round for a reason. Skaters are more valuable than goaltenders.</div></div>
While there are a number of factors for it, the conclusion is correct. Skaters are more valuable than goaltenders, speaking in general terms related to drafting.
It's far more economical to draft skaters and trade skaters and/or picks for goaltenders once they have established themselves.
You can't develop 10 goaltenders and hope one of them works out, because you only have 4 or 5 positions where they will gain significant development experience and playing time. The other 5 guys are essentially just standing around and taking up space, because they won't become viable without playing time at a higher level of competition.
It's far more difficult to evaluate a goaltender or project their development, so regardless of how well you scout them, the odds of them becoming what you expect are significantly lower. Thusly, the odds of completely blowing a 1st round pick are higher. You don't take risks with 1st round picks. Smart drafting means maximizing your odds of turning your high picks into NHLers.
Spending one 1st round pick on a goaltender that was drafted and developed somewhat already, is the best way to turn a 1st into an NHL starter. Since goaltending positions are limited, potential starters become available fairly regularly.
That said, an elite and established starter is worth more than a skater of similar value.
As for building from the net out, that IS a viable strategy that is used all the time. You just don't start that process by drafting a goaltender in the first round. Once you have acquired a sufficient starter through other means, you can absolutely build outwards from him.

Sorry, I'm at a lost to see any value in the Colarado trade for the both teams. If Geersten is as good as you say, he wouldn't be a 22 year old shuffling between the ECHL and AHL. And if he's that's good, surely the Avs wouldn't be trading him for one year of then UFA Bozak. And because of the the Doughty trade you seem to have the Leafs in the win mode now. So why trade Bozak who is needed, for a Dman, who can't make your NHL team?

The architecture of a Contender
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Doug: I don't see how McKeown is an upgrade over Carrick (this. season) and why you project has a 3/4 Dmen. His 12 points in the AHL last year, certainly doesn't point him to be a solid NHLer (yea points aren't everything). You would think Dermott and Nielsen have just as much NHL potential, and Dermott much more.</div></div>
Hal, McKeown more of a shut down guy (Hamonic type) as well as offense. Also a RD, (as Carrick) but not called up last year due to the depth of the Carolina defence! I see Dermott as a serious prospect, (needs to be a top 4) not so Nielsen, but at least a year away, which puts him behind Borgman and Rosen, and when likely ready may take the Gardiner spot! Only RD prospect in our system is Liljegren who I believe will be ready sooner than later but makes the right side interesting going forward! Carrick without question slides into our 5/6 right side but only because the alternative is Marchenko! Leafs actively shopping Carrick in package scenario so can't see his future being a Leaf.
McKeown also trains here in Toronto with Gary Roberts, who thinks he is a beast!

The architecture of a Contender
I keep going over and over this trade. Not sure I agree/disagree with any of the above comments on either side! (It's about time a posted trade had us thinking)! IMO Hanifin is now and projects out as a very solid 2/3 Dman! McKeown likely a 3/4 and certainly an upgrade on Carrick!
So in 2017 my pairings would be: Hanifin - Reilly, Gardiner - Zaitsev, Hainsey - McKeown
Carolina desperately needs offense and this trade not only gives them that it likely makes them a serious contender to make the playoffs. (Likely 3rd in Metro)
Carolina is also extremely deep in D prospects some currently ready: Fleury, Bean, and soon ready: Kichton, Wesley, so the downside is truly limited.
Giving up Brown in the deal is my biggest concern, although likely the piece Carolina would be unwilling to give up! Leafs are strong right side but his 200 ft. game cannot be overlooked and he actually makes the Kadri line significant as a shut down line!
Would Carolina still make this deal if Kapanen and/or Shoshnikov were subbed for Brown? NOT LIKELY!
I do see ODOG"s balance of defense for offense, and don't see this restricting additional development of what is becoming some promising D prospects in our system!
As the Leafs, I bite hard and make this deal!
