Bouch and Bear are both capable of playing either side, so that pairing works well together. Not ideal, of course. Holland probably tries to balance the defence a bit during the off-season so guys play on their usual side. I figure Jones and Lagesson will be competing for a spot in the lineup. Statistically, Bouch has been our best puck-moving defenseman. Wouldn't surprise me if he sat though, just because he's a rookie

The Ducks have absolutely no reason to trade Gibby, unless it's for a significant overpay. That's the just of it. It's not like there's any reason at all to move him. D-prospect wise, the Ducks have a bunch. Offensively, they have a bunch of Lavoie-type guys as well. It really doesn't make any sense.</div></div>
Why not sell high while he's playing amazing and has a great contract with term. Obviously Anaheim won't be looking to contend for at least 4 years and by then Gibson will be nearing UFA status. Lukas Dostal will be ready to play by then. I'm sure the asking price isn't as high as some would expect although a team would likely bid higher than this mock trade

Getting rid of neal
Leftover $6.4mill in cap space hopefully goes towards taking Klef off LTIR. Maybe also a small upgrade at 3C. I feel like the top 6 forward we sign likely gets a 1-year deal. We don't know how much of a raise Nurse, Pulju and Bear will want the next summer. That may limit who we can sign. Getting rid of Neal is huge

The Neal trade isn't necessary but would save a lot of time. His deal is weighing us down till 2022-23. There's a lot that can be done with that cap space

Yea, I'm starting to think a 1A, 1B setup is the better option. Gives us 2 solid goalies and odds are one of them is on a heater going into the playoffs. Driedger would be a solid signing and saves money for elsewhere in the lineup. If Driedger is ready to be a #1 goalie once Koski's deal ends then his contract will look like a bargain and we save extra to spend on Nurse. Pulju and Bear

I mean on a Stanley Cup contender you want Ekholm playing those 15 minutes, not Lehtonen. Ekholm has had a down year so far on a terrible Nashville team but he was considered a top 30 all around defenseman as recently as last year

Oh yea actually your right, assuming Klef returns there's not much room. Klef returning could be considered an upgrade on defence. The left side will be great, the right side might be a bit weak on paper. Bouch and Bear could thrive with the extra ice time though. Still a lot of potential with upgrades upfront and in net, hopefully Holland makes the right moves

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Zmach</b></div><div>Can afford 3/4 of those things probably not defence.</div></div>
There's a surprising amount of money available this summer if Neal is dumped. On defence, Larsson takes a pay cut, Barrie walks, Russell's contract is 2.75mill cheaper. Thats around $7-8mill in cap space. You have to spend a certain amount on defence if you want a competitive team. We'd look silly spending $15mill on our entire defence. Easily $5-7mill left over for a defenceman although there's barely anyone worth spending on in free agency

Id be willing to pay that to unload Neal for sure. There's a chance it takes less but hopefully it happens somehow. We could afford a #1 goalie, a 3C, a top 6 forward and an upgrade on defense this summer

No cap space left for Kass to come off LTIR, and Russell's contract doesn't allow him to be waived. Wouldn't mind an upgrade at 3c going into the playoffs, although we are quite thin on draft picks as is

Young left defensemen I would trade for
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeterChiarelli</b></div><div>Even if Broberg and Samorukov start in Bakersfield (they should) and Jones is lost to Seattle (highly probable), a left side of Nurse-Klefbom-Lagesson is far from poor. The game is so much more about puck mobility now; the extra year for Bear and Bouchard will pay dividends. Bottom-10 is a gross over-exaggeration. League average is probably more apt. League average defence with above average goaltending and outstanding offense makes the Oilers a threat. That should be the focus.</div></div>
Our defence really is quite bad on paper although we can win games when everyone follows Tippett's system. <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/teams/edmonton-oilers/line-combinations/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Here's how our defense stacks up in the NHL</a>
Unless Bouch and Bear really elevate their game next season I'd argue our defence gets worse if Barrie walks and we replace Larsson with a similar player

Why on earth would Seattle take Henrique lol. Neals contract only has 2YL, which makes It much more appealing in terms of awful contracts, Henrique has 4YL. You'd need to add a lot to get rid of Henrique although I don't Anaheim is too concerned about that mid rebuild

Young left defensemen I would trade for
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeterChiarelli</b></div><div>I'm torn regarding Barrie, especially knowing how the game is played during the playoffs. I think I'd almost rather see Edmonton move him for a pick or two at the deadline and continue to roll through Bear, Bouchard, and Larsson on the right. Russell could step in on that side if needed for a few minutes per game. Bouchard can absolutely take the powerplay minutes and is already more defensively responsible.
I like the idea of Savard for a 2-3 year deal as a Larsson replacement for next year and continuing the mentality of platooning the starboardmen alongside the notably stronger leftorium. I think Hamilton is nonsensical.
Praying for Grubauer, Staal, and a Nugent-Hopkins extension out of free agency next season. I think Holloway makes the roster and Kahun extends.</div></div>
Grubauer, Stall, extending Nuge and Kahun would all be great. Every game it looks like Yamo's new deal will be cheaper, saving extra cap room. A veteran who actually contributes something is much needed. Tipp likes his veterans so someone like Stall would work well at 3C.
Trading Barrie likely wouldn't impact our record at all, I hope it happens, we could use some 2nd/3rd round picks. Bouch and Nurse could easily maintain our current PP%. Bouch's defensive numbers are better than Barrie's, although he's been pretty sheltered. Realistically, I doubt we move Barrie because he signed this cheap "show me" deal in Edmonton, publicly making it know that he was here to rack up some points and get paid next summer. It would be a bad look trading him 2 months into the season when he appears to be clicking well here. I assume we'll overplay him all year and let him walk in free agency
I really don't think there are any upgrades for Larsson in free agency. Unless we make a big upgrade by bringing in a top pair RD, I don't see why we disrupt morale and chemistry by letting him walk. If our top 3 RD next year were 1. Bear 2. Bouch 3. Larsson/Savard/(any similar 2nd/3rd pair RD) I'd be somewhat disappointed. Realistically that's a bottom 10 RD depth chart in the league currently. In a few years it could be one of the best with Bouch and Bear growing their games and transitioning to the NHL. If we don't upgrade this summer we're wasting time imo. The left side at least has Nurse

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeterChiarelli</b></div><div>Bouchard should be growing into that role over time and Bear needs more minutes.
I think the blueline is what it is this season, and that Tippett should be looking at running 7D as often as possible against the better teams in the division. That load needs to be shared much more evenly, and until we have a bonafide #3C, it's a matter of load management for McDavid, Draisaitl, and Nugent-Hopkins with the extraneous wingers.</div></div>
Yea, definitely not something we upgrade mid-season. There's no UFA RD's this summer that fill the role we need on the top pair. imo a trade might be the only answer for that. I think it's too early to be giving Bouch or Bear 22+ minutes each night next season. Relying on them would set us up to have mediocre defence again. In 2-3 seasons they'll be ready to play big minutes, and be reliable in both ends of the ice. We need someone who is sound defensively instead of Barrie logging 25 minutes. Bring in a guy who can actually play top pair minutes and if Bouch or Bear earn more ice time then that makes our defence even stronger
A 3C, goalie and potentially a top 6 winger are easily found in free agency

This team is currently showing that even with half a blueline, they're really just a goaltender and a bonafide #3C short. </div></div>
A 1B or starter, a 30 - 40 point 3C with defensive capability, and I'd argue that finding a RHD capable of playing 22+ minutes/night is crucial. Barrie had 25:18 toi against Toronto. That's pretty ridiculous he's a PP specialist

You can't trade Barrie. It would be an awful look. We aren't rebuilders trading some veterans we signed in the summer at the deadline.
This is a top tier offensive defenseman who signed for cheap to play in Edmonton. Ship him out for some futures or another roster player 2 months into the season? Holland would never, bad for his rep anyways
He played 25minutes toi vs Toronto. Everyone knows Barrie would thrive with sheltered offensive minutes and PP time, ~17min toi. That's the problem. You could say this is Tippett's fault. But imo this exposes our lack of a top pair RD
