dam it
Well that is how it generally works. The good teams, or the playoff teams are usually up to the cap, and they probably have a locked in core. Non-playoff teams should have a ton of cap to get better, and their core is usually on a different cycle. But it's easy for Ottawa and Detroit to get better. They were bad last year.

Flames - What ends up happening
Why would MT do this? He's locking up for max term and max earnings on his next contract. If Flames somehow convinced him to take only a 3yr deal, it would come with a crazy AAV.

My boy the QO is $9million. Why is he taking less? He probably figures 9+ at term is on the table at UFA.

Leafs go Brrr
Muzzin not agreeing to live in Edmonton. Also, the rumor is that the Oilers are getting low offers for JP. Apparently a 3rd would be too much right now.

sandin he gone lol
The ask on Dach should be big, because at this rate he should be worth more to the Blackhawks.
Zero chance I would come remotely close to paying that much for Dach if I'm Toronto.

Random Thought
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jimmyjets</b></div><div>It isn't really that bad. He still scored at a 76 point pace last year and the caphit is $8.25. So overpaid by about $1M but there are way worse contracts out there. Blake Wheeler's demise has been greatly exaggerated due to the time he was playing with broken ribs 2 years ago and last years slow ramp up after he got Covid. Even with those injuries he still put up nearly a point per game.</div></div>
His points are fine, but he's still an aging player at that number. And how much is the deal worth it considering I now have to have his baggage as well. And bless Sutter, HOF coach, but even he and his systems have limits on how much better they can make someone who is dreadful defensively.
Mainly if they decide they can trade MT, they definitely get more. At the minimum they don't take a bad contract on. Also, I don't understand why Winnipeg would do this unless maybe it's TDL and they are ahead in the division. Zero chance he signs an extension there.

Miller packages
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juiceman</b></div><div>The leafs literally gave up a first round pick for Nock Foligno as a rental at the deadline. He played 10 games with them. Miller is 1000 times better than Foligno</div></div>
He definitely is way better, no question. It's a fair enough ask- I said it's not unreasonable. The Foligno trade was also a mistake. Best to not repeat those I think. Also the context with that trade- Dubas has always said that he doesn't want to trade 1st Rd picks for rentals. The other time he traded a 1st to get a player, he had term. The year of the Foligno trade having guys that didn't have term was actually ideal since it was expansion draft. Still should have not gave a 1st.
I think as a rental JT Miller probably gets a package like this from some team- 1st Rd pick, A- ish prospect, and a 2nd Rd pick. Again, I don't think you ever pay that for a rental unless it's randomly a top10 guy in the league that becomes available.

DUBAS FINALLY GETS IT RIGHT BY ADDING SCHEIFELE COPP AND MARCHMENT
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Windjammer</b></div><div>Toronto would need to add significantly of the want the Jets to downgrade so extremely. It's unlikely to happen though, no one is trading a consistent PPG 1C for a soft, poor defensive, me first winger.</div></div>
You are literally describing Scheifele. Years of watching God awful defence from your C and you still don't know what it looks like? Me first winger? Nylander after having a bad playoffs took responsibility last year. Lol go take a listen to Scheifele's interview post a dreadful year. Lol "me first"? That's Nylander and not Scheifele?
Truthfully the trade between the two does not make sense. If Leafs are going to upgrade at 2C, it will have to be one that actually plays defence. Might as well keep JT there if that's the case. Jets are strong at wing, and after playing his whole life in a city like Toronto, zero chance s player in that situation would ever re-sign in Winnipeg. With the PLD news I think the Jets about to learn that if they ever trade for someone, the years remaining have to be minimum 3-4 yrs, or an equivalent of those years of control. No one wants to play in that city.

It's not as outrageous as most Vancouver fans have made the packages- lol these boys about to be real disappointed tonight- but I still wouldn't do the Leaf one. I don't think you ever pay that much for a rental.

Best Case Scenario Tarasenko Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>forthosewhoarehomesick</b></div><div>If Husso wants to go to Toronto, it would make sense to get the deal done sooner rather than later. That's not helping out the Blues, that's helping his new team have a better understanding of the cap heading into free agency. Also, I don't think Husso's going to get anything better than a 4x4.5 deal. Too small of a sample size to pay big, and he'll trade dollars for job security.
Fit and cap hit go hand in hand. You're not going to extend an RFA and give him $3mil+ to play on his off hand, and you're certainly not paying that for a 7th defenseman. It's going to be easier to trade Sandin than Muzzin, and you can get a better goalie than say, Korpisalo, by doing so. Your points about Dubas drafting him and wanting to keep him though are valid. GMs love their guys and don't want the ego hit of moving on from someone they drafted, especially in the first round.</div></div>
It wouldn't make sense for Husso, I don't understand what you don't get about this. And let's say Leafs somehow got word from his camp that he desperately wanted to sign with them, or any team for argument sake, but only if they traded and signed him right now (instead again, waiting a week), the return for that is still not a top4 dman. Lol that's outrageous. It's maybe at most a 6th pick. You can't even make the argument here that a higher asset is required because they are going full term with the player in order to save against the cap hit. Wild take. Again, you taking a 5th for Perunovich?

The Boys in Blue
I like Soucy a ton. Maybe he's there at TDL, and you get him. But his cost is not Muzzin and a 1st (this of course is ignoring the NTC). He doesn't even cost a 1st. Ideally he's a guy that plays with Muzzin.

Best Case Scenario Tarasenko Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>forthosewhoarehomesick</b></div><div>If you read the additional notes, it says a sign and trade. Blues only send Husso if they know they can sign Sandin, and even though Toronto probably won't have the money to sign Sandin anyway, they only make the trade if they know Husso will sign with them at the AAV they want.</div></div>
Let's break this down. Firstly, I did read your notes. It's totally nonsensical. For starters, UFA rights and RFA rights are different. St Louis has zero control or leverage over Husso doing anything. Why would the Leafs not just wait for Husso to be UFA instead of giving up a top4 dman? More interesting from your thinking, why would Husso, who is an UFA, not go to a market where 10 teams will be looking at him (well reported that a ton of teams would be interested)? Does he want to do St Louis a favour and make the team he's going to worse? Can he not wait 1week? This is the reason why sign and trades don't exist in the NHL. Also it's not like anyone is even going to give him 8 year term.
Your point on Sandin is not true. Despite what has become incredibly over-blown (makes sense- leaf things sell the most), Sandin's issue is not contract-related directly. It's fit. He sees the left-side full and wonders about his place. But the Leafs still like him, he's the GMs 1st pick, and they value him highly. You have Perunovich in a deal for an elite player here. Watch both players and see how close Sandin and Perunovich are.
