Deadline deals part 4
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Domi is worth a late 2nd or basically Abruzzesse. Adding Kerfoot is doing the Leafs a favor, why would the Hawks take back a useless player knowing the other team needs to move cap out? In other words, Domi is getting traded for that type of value whether to the Leafs or elsewhere, it's not as if the Leafs are the only option, which if they were your rationale makes sense but they aren't. Moving cap out to a team that views the player as useless requires payment to that team, aka cap dump. Leafs will probably need to include a 4th rounder to move Kerfoot to the Hawks, but more importantly, the Leafs should look to a team that would value Kerfoot and get something in return for him even if it it's only a 4th or 5th rounder.</div></div>
I understand what you are saying. I guess the main thought I had was that Domi likely won't be resigning in Chicago and is essentially a rental. I'm not sure I agree he's worth a 2nd but I would do the deal for Abruzzese straight up. The Leafs could take a similar approach with Kerf as a rental for a middle prospect in a separate deal to make the cap work.

Deadline deals part 4
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Hawks decline. Kerfoot is a cap dump to the Hawks whether Leafs fans think he has value or not. You can't trade a cap dump and expect not to pay the Hawks for taking on the hit. Abruzzesse simply isn't enough to get Domi and dump Kerfoot.</div></div>
So the Hawks are tanking for Bedard. Domi makes $3,000,000 and Kerf only makes 500,000 more. They can play the same situation and both are UFAs so ultimately the deal is for the prospect and the Hawks can wipe their hands clean in the offseason if they want to and clear $3.5 M off the books. They won't be good for a few years so collecting prospects should work for them. Maybe a different prospect. What would a counter be in your opinion ?

Deadline deals part 3
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dutchies</b></div><div>Laughton has 3 more years after this year at $3M........we've got youth coming up (Homberg, Abruzzeze, Steeves) as well as Kampf and Jarnkrok on the roster. We don't need an overpaid guy for faceoffs when Taqvares, Matthews and Kampf are better.
I like Fabbro, but once again, he's not a huge upgrade and is not worth a first and a third
Garland, once again, I like him, but not at just under $5M for the next 3 years (after this one). To me not worth a first.
We need to keep the extra cap $$ coming up to resign Matthews, Marner and Nylander. JT will probably take a pay cut to try and win a cup in Toronto (since he'll have made over $100M by the time the contract ends).
Leafs need to be very careful with their picks and prospects to add pieces that will help with a Stanley Cup run, and I don't think any of these player will.</div></div>
Valid points. Dubas likes to trade for guys under contract vs rental unless he feels he can resign them. It will be interesting to see how they balance youth and aquisitions which can help over the next 2-3 years. I like the idea of bringing up Knies this year so that takes care of one LW spot. I think he could at worst be a 3rd Line LW. If Robertson keeps getting scratched and not playing, I would consider moving him for the right trade either for a really good 3rd Line C, Top 6 Winger or Top 4 Right Shot D - all of which would need a decent cap hit. Who are the players you think would be good fits for : Top 6 winger, 3rd Line C or Top 4 Right Shot D ?

The Canucks are not making the playoffs so they may as well get some assets for a guy who has been on the trade block to free up cap space. A 1st, a Center prospect and two UFAs gets them adequate value and saves cap space.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dutchies</b></div><div>I say no to all 3 deals. Doesn't put us in a better situation for this year or the future......</div></div>
Fabbro is younger, has higher upside and is better than Holl.
Laughton is actually a center, good face-off stats and provides more offense then Kerfoot. He has proven he can't play center.
Garland provides a feisty winger, still in his prime and gives you some offense and is a better fit in the top 6 which allows bunting to slide down to 3rd line LW.
I think these deals improve the team for a playoff run this year as well as decent contracts which will still allow flexibility in the coming years especially as the cap goes up.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Way too much for Fabro. Rather have Holl this year, and then next year have cap and picks.
Kinda the same situation with Laughton. Is he really an improvement now over Kerfoot as Laughton is injured.
But it does present cap problem next season if Muzzin returns</div></div>
So I think Muzzin retires based on his health. Laughton adds offense and is way better as a Center and on the face-off dot. These are deals closer to the deadline. I think Fabbro is a better, younger player who is an upgrade on Holl.

He played very well in the world juniors for Canada and is a 6"2" Right shot D so there is a need their for the Leafs. He also was Sandin's partner with the Greyhounds and they had great chemistry. He's got a lot of upside and I think could be our 6th D. The risk is that he hasn't been healthy since he was drafted by the Avs. Arizona has a boatload of right shot young D so they thought he was expendable.

Well, they traded Douglas for him today so I don't think I was too far off of my prediction. Douglas is bigger and can fight but slower and has less offensive upside than Abruzzese. Timmons is just a stop gap option, hence the name of this ACGM.

MTL is not making the playoffs and Kerf is a UFA at the end of the year. He could replace Monahan's minutes for the remainder of the year. Ok maybe its a 2nd and a bit better prospect but this deal is pretty close to fair value for both teams.

I think the hope here would be that Dumba finds his game a bit and the Leafs can resign him in the offseason. I think Dumba is still an upgrade on Holl currently and for Minny, you get a Hometown 6th D man and a 2nd Rd pick. I don't see them resigning Dumba so this is good value.

Is there any reason to believe Comtois is playing any better than Roberson?</div></div>
I think for sure there is reason to believe Dumba would be an upgrade over Holl. A change of scenery can sometimes bring about better chemistry too. To me, Holl is the weakest link and an upgrade is needed. Dumba would provide a solid right shot D that could pair well with Rielly whereas there is no chance that Holl could survive in that role. For the Comtois swap, he brings a different dimension to that line. I think the Leafs have too many small skilled forwards and need to bring in some grit with net front presence.

It ignores situation completely. Additionally, I wouldn’t expect a 1st for Bear, but in the right situation I see no reason why a projected low 2nd or early 3rd isn’t a return.
I like Engvall TBH - but you trade a controlled asset for a bottom 6 forward who the Canes likely have to put on waivers or healthy scratch too. It’s not good asset management.
Canes have 4-5 forwards playing in Chicago that are waiver exempt they could bring up to play bottom 6 mins if necessary.
It’s just not a good trade situationally.</div></div>
I respect that logic. Maybe I'd be willing to add a 3rd Rd pick or a mid level prospect to that deal.

Bear is not playing as the canes have a surplus of defense. They have identical caps hits. Canes are not getting a 1st for a healthy scratch that was a 5th rd pick to begin with. Might as well get a serviceable bottom six forward who can play center, penalty kill and scored 15 goals last year.

I think that a trade for Kerf happens when some teams strike out on free agents after the first wave. He has a 10 team trade list so it would take more time. I still think both could go and you could sign similar players at a lower cap hit.
