San Jose Sharks signed Erik Karlsson (8 Years / $11,500,000 AAV)
Just blows my mind on how everyone is a capoligist and an expert. Don’t know why these GMs don’t have most you guys on speed dial. Has anyone thought that he won’t take less term ? Cuz he will get term from someone else anyhow... Do you think maybe it’s not just cut and paste getting players. Someone of Karlssons caliber doesn’t come along often. Everyone screams cap problems every time a signing is made. Only team that ran into real cap issues and unloaded quality players was Chicago. I think these guys got it under control. There’s no simple answers here.

Add that to Burns, another defenseman who's not good at defence, and you have a match made in hell.
You now have only $12.5 million to sign your players, including Labanc, Meier and Pavelski. Good luck.</div></div>
Being "not good at defense" is more than outweighed by all the puck possession and offensive production that they both contribute to.

Erik Karlsson is so good that signing him is a victory, and the term and money are irrelevant.

I don't think the argument is whether Karlsson deserves the contract. The argument is whether the Sharks can afford it and remain competitive.

People don't seem to understand that not every contract is going to be team friendly. That's just the reality of the business. Erik Karlsson is a game changing talent and one that can push the team over the top. He's 29 years old, so he's still got a good handful of those Hall of Fame worthy seasons left in him. And to ensure that they got this once in a generation player over the duration of their Cup window, this was the contract necessary.

With a healthy Karlsson they could have won the Cup. No one else has 2 Norris trophy defensemen in their lineup.
Knowing that the Sharks are in win-now mode, would you as SJ's GM really pass on this guy because the deal is a bit too long???

San Jose Sharks signed Timo Meier (4 Years / $6,000,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Daoloth</b></div><div>I'm sure krap Karl will be on IR for most of those 10 years or never play a full season... Likely he will have less games played in 10 years than Timo will in 4 ;)... I thought he would do better for Sharks but then he faded a bit... Shanks didn't get enough scoring from a few of the depth forwards, Kane vanished instead of flourish :)... I kinda like Kings getting Iaffallo for a deal around Forbort money but not into Reaves kinda green :). I was against Karl coming, I think Sharks win cup if they kept Hoffman going w/ D-men they had on right side/keeping Tierney/DeMelo etc... Then maybe making a move to get a left shot D-man like a Muzzin a guy who can score 10-20 goals not 1 like Dillon or whatever Vlasic had :).</div></div>

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Daoloth</b></div><div>I saw people calling this a steal but I think its an alright deal... Something like Wild Bill at 8 years for under 6M maybe is a steal but this isn't... HE got a decent amt of money, I think they would have to tender him 10M a year at end of this or some BS... Sharks got to try to win a Cup before Seattle comes in, I think that window slammed shut a while back... Though they sunk a lot of money into a few players trying to get a cup within next few years... If they are in shambles at end of this contract they can probably still move him for value if he has any :).</div></div>
I’m sorry but I am taking Meier over William Karlsson every day of the week for the next 10 years.

Incorrect.
<p>Oops, Meier’s first season in SJ was 34 games, so he didn’t get an accrued season for that. therefore, he isn’t UFA until 2024.
