Chicago playing it smart
Using a retention spot for a 5th round pick is not smart, Chicago has enough players currently on their roster; Murphy, TJ, Foligno, Dickinson, Mrazek; that they could retain on that they could receive as good, if not better returns.
Signing a 95 year old Phil Kessel is not smart.
Resigning Zaitsev is not smart.

I could nitpick but I think these lines are gonna shuffle quite a bit throughout the season. I will say there's no chance raddysh is scratched.

Next Year very optimistic
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AlTintin1122</b></div><div>I do like Hanifin as an add. Nylander move I agree , I prob wouldn’t . Maybe sign someone like Eberle or Toffoli to a short term deal instead to insulate the kids. Idk which goalie they can give 40+ games too. Ufa goalie market is weak</div></div>
I think Hanifin gets traded and extended (not chicago) but I would consider it if he got to UFA depending on his ASK/How we view our defense prospects. I would say there’s like a 20% chance he gets the UFA.
As far as the goalies are concerned I would think the hawks can fill that need from within.

I think Moore is a 2 years in college kind of prospect, not loving the accelerate the rebuild moves of Hanafin and Nylander but that’s a better debated next offseason. I’m not sure why we would bridge Reichel when we have the cap space to pay him long term…also Mrazek is not getting that contract from a NHL team.

So your thought is that Hawks want a Petry with an $8.25M cap hit??? Then 2 more years of $2M???

The only trade down situation Id be happy with
CHI declines. It would easily cost the 11th overall just to dump OEL. If Davidson is feeling generous, maybe he sends VAN their 2024 2nd back so they can go do a Byram offer sheet or whatever. I might even be cool with a handshake deal to take Myers after his bonus is paid, in order to sweeten the deal a little bit. But all of that going back to VAN is a non starter.

Hawks obviously decline. OEL, even w/ the retention, costs #11 just to move out.

No one is taking on 4 years of OEL at 8.25M for 10-15 spots in the draft.

Draft picks optimistic
That BUF trade is not good. That 1st round of the draft would be great but the rest would be a failure, IMO. Then again, the draft order is completely up in the air right now. So, who knows who will be available and where.

I’m not worried about it, real talk though what would you want for Laf/Chytil with the context of a looming offersheet.

The Kane revenge strategy
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>The risk in this process is that now you open yourself up to not getting either player. If you OS Miller, you have 7 days before the Rags will match it. In that time one or two other teams can OS either or both of the other players then NY still loses one but not to Chicago.</div></div>
I would mitigate this risk by offering to acquire the player in advance of an offersheet, like a civilized person, but if that doesn’t work then let the pieces fall where they may.

Lets see
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kyle_Davidson</b></div><div>Maybe Michkov is available at the caps pick and the hawks think they can get him to come over?</div></div>
I'd be shocked if Michkov falls out of the top 5 or 6. He's a Patrick Kane/Panarin/Kucherov type of talent hands down. 4 or 5 teams (beyond Bedard pick at #1), will have a very hard time passing on him as he is hands down the 2nd best player in the draft with Fantilli close behind him. The only reason he obviously won't go number 2 is the Russian contract factor and Fantilli being a elite prospect himself and very close in talent level.
Where it gets a little interesting is taking Carlsson before Michkov as Michkov is better by almost every analysis. After Leo, the talent drops in the draft from elite/franchise/all star locks down to top of the lineup prospects starting with Will Smith IMO. I could possibly see Will Smith making a case to pick over Michkov's contract situation but someone needs be really high on Will Smith or ready to compete in a year or two and can't wait a few years for Michkov. Once you hit pick #6, I just don't see rebuilding teams not having the patience to grab a franchise player.
To frame this up from my point of view, Michkov IMO is not far behind Bedard as far as talent and upside. It's like comparing a Pastrnak to Kane to Toews if they were all drafted the same year in terms of Bedard - Michkov - Fantilli. You could probably look at Leo Carlsson as a Rantanen type of player adding him into the mix. Beyond that, the draft talent takes a noticeable step down to the degree of passing on michkov (Kane/Kucherov/Panarin) is a giant risk.

This seems like an NFL type trade on that Chicago/Caps trade. Simply put, there is no way Murphy and a 2nd is worth moving up 9 spots given it's outside the top 10 in the draft. As Pronmon recently said, yes the 2023 draft is very deep in the top 6 to 8 spots, beyond that is a normal draft like any other year.

Idkman
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fangm</b></div><div>The trade is bad but they have to make it. Even watching the game last night Kevin Weekes made that point. Once Kane makes a decision if he picks a team Chicago has to do right by him or else no free agents will sign there, if Bedard does go there he will want out when he can.
He made the point that O'Reilly requested a trade to Toronto, Gio requested a trade to Toronto and Toronto has lots of players wanting to go there because Dubas has a rep as a players GM and while you can debate the merits of that for winning a cup, it attracts players. Davidson already has a bad reputation for the way he's acted as Chicago GM. I just agree with that analysis that if Kane says he wants to go to NYR or Toronto or Edmonton and he gives only one team. Even if it's for future considerations Chicago has to do it and if they don't get need to fire Davidson cause players will avoid the Hawks while he is GM.
Chances of Kane staying and resigning are pretty much zero. It seems pretty obvious he isn't happy with management. Why else would he make public comments about not liking the Tarasenko trade and being disappointed that his health information was leaked by the team.</div></div>
No they don't have to make the trade at all. If you're offered crap you keep the player. Period.
Your last paragraph is just you speculating. Nothing factual. You're just grasping at straws to support your false narrative.

The assumption is that CHI has pretty much no leverage here. Most of that value is actually meant for Domi, since he can actually be dealt elsewhere</div></div>
Then Chicago simply keeps Kane and he re-signs with Chicago this summer and mentors Bedard next season. Chicago doesn't HAVE to do anything. There's zero leverage at all. It's just pie in the sky wishful thinking fantasy land stuff from Leafs and Rangers fans.
