I went to check that on the NHL app, it says there have been 156 PIM (NJD 82, NYR 74), but there have been no penalties taken, 7 1/2 minutes into the 1st. Unsurprisingly, Matt Rempe earned 15 PIM in just 2 seconds of ice time

Wtf is he supposed to say. The team was already overachieving then lost it’s starting goaltender, their gm made them sellers at the deadline, and every “controversial” thing I’ve seen is him answering a rhetorical question from click happy journalists.</div></div>
I haven't seen any post game interviews, just occasional commentary/articles on it, but based on the info you've provided, it seems like "journalists" are doing something similar to dropping a match into a barrel of oil, and then being surprised / calling it controversial when it catches fire

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyScotty</b></div><div>From afar, it appears that the reason the Growlers ceased operations is because the Sale offer was not accepted or not acceptable by the ECHL. The current owner is obviously out, so if there is no new owner for the franchise it will cease. I think the questions should come up about whether or not an ownership group for an ECHL can be found in time to save the pro hockey for the community.
From the reporting Seth Cooper has done, it sounds like the other ECHL owners are not really excited to save the location due to the travel costs.</div></div>
Thanks for the info. Apparently, the owner sold 3R to become league-owned and they will search for a new owner. I'm not sure why 3R got that option, but NL was terminated despite the 2 teams being in the same situation. I can understand wanting to mitigate travel costs, but I'd be surprised if the travel costs outweigh the additional revenue for having the only pro sports team in NL, and a successful one at that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CameronSquires</b></div><div>It’s honestly disgusting how the Growlers were affected by the owners owing money for 3Riviers. This had nothing to do with the Growlers themselves yet they’re the ones who get dumped. I’m genuinely disgusted with how this played out and it’s honestly embarrassing for the ECHL.</div></div>
I agree. The ECHL could not have done anything else wrong. First of all, I would have assumed that the ECHL would have had rules in place to prevent the same organization from owning multiple franchises and a Conflict of Interest. We saw that the NHL forced Andlauer to sell his stake in the Habs before taking ownership of the Sens. Second, it should have been 3Rivers that ceased operations because they were the ones that owned money. The Growlers should not have been a casualty of 3Rivers mismanagement.
Third, the Growlers had been around for longer and actually had success winning Division titles, a conference title, and a Kelly Cup, while 3R just started a few years ago and has struggled to make the playoffs.

Panthers are 2-7-1 in their last 10. Almost looks like they realized that if they won the division, they would get home ice so they’re trying to tank to get road ice advantage, even if the Leafs are a stronger matchup than a wild card team.

Hamilton would be ideal, but the FirstOntario Centre (formerly Copps Coliseum) is undergoing renovations and before that, the Bulldogs, Toronto Rock, and Hamilton Honey Badgers all played there, you’d pretty much need to build a new arena. The problem with an ECHL team in Toronto is I’m not sure how many people they would attract given that they would be overshadowed by the Leafs and Marlies.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>Very interesting here: The Leafs are only 6 points back of Boston with a game in hand... That would matchup, for the 3rd time in a row, with the Tampa Bay Lightning...
1. What are the odds?
2. Would the Leafs rather Tampa or Florida/Boston (Not saying to tank, but them building for a clash with Florida/Boston, would playing Tampa be more benefitting to them so they don't have to play both Florida and Boston)?</div></div>
I was listening to Joe Bowen and Jim Ralph on the Leafs game broadcast the other night and they were saying that not having home ice might actually be an advantage. I think 4/5 of the Leafs playoff wins last year came on the road, including when the Leafs broke the 1st round curse. Leafs have been better on the road this year too.
Given how it seems the Leafs are cursed in general (as mentioned in the general NHL thread), it seems like they need to break those curses to move on. If/when the Leafs play the Bruins in the playoffs, the Leafs have to win a Game 7 in Boston.

Should the NHL have loser points during the regular season ?
While an OTL is still a loss, it's not the same as a regulation loss. Games that go into OT are beneficial for both the business and fan point of view.
It's more exciting for the fans, it's longer (more fans buying merchandise, concessions, etc.) which benefits the teams, and more time for advertising (better for the owners).
The current system seems to be working, there are no loser points (or shootouts) in the playoffs, and most games end in regulation anyway.
If it becomes a problem that too many teams are playing for a tie (and get a guaranteed point), you could switch to the 3-2-1-0 format, but the problem with that is that it would mess with the NHL Records, and they would have to retroactively apply the 3-2-1-0 format to the current record holders or apply the 2-1-0 format to teams in the 3-2-1-0 format

Auston Matthews has scored 5 power-play goals in the playoffs in his career
As said before giving it to him more wont change much but instead make it easier to read. Its a 5 man unit not just one guy. Matthews has shot well for years yet 5 PP goals

Wow, that's a lot of research, thanks!
To be clear, I agreed with your post earlier (the one I replied to). I heard the Great Eight is only 53 goals away from tying the Great One, so that was on my mind when I read your post and I thought that was funny. I thought about adding more context than just the link, but I thought it would lose its effect that way.

My solution would be for players on LTIR to be eligible for the playoffs, they would need to play in x number of regular season games (in April?). I agree the NHL has to find a way to encourage low taxes, but that would punish Canadian teams (who have the most fans) and I doubt such a system would make the federal or provincial governments reduce taxes in any significant way.

It's the players that sign 8 year contracts because they don't want to move and have $$$$ security. These players that sign 8 year contracts that have the option of signing one year contracts or one year plus deals if they want.
But you're right about LeBron. Most NBAers aren't playing till age of 40, most of them have careers similar duration to NHLers, so players don't move as often.
The NBA sure has a complicated cap system, and it really affects trades also.</div></div>
In my opinion, I think to build a legacy (which is good for the game), I think you need to play your early career and prime with one maybe 2 teams. By the last few years of your career, you can play for as many teams as you want but I think playing most of your career for 2 (or ideally just the team that drafted you) builds the greatest legacy

Have to find a way to ensure some level of parity and fairness but when Canes (as an example) can spend same amount of money as Leafs (or any of the top revenue generating teams) while generating significantly less revenue to the league, that system is not fair. But more importantly, it’s limiting growth of the league. NHL is not the NFL so copying their system was major mistake imo but Bettman cared more about punishing players than growing the league. NBA has grown exponentially more than NHL is past years /decades 🤷🏻</div></div>
Coincidentally, Bettman used to work for the NBA and the NHL was growing until he took over

So - yes parity would be impacted, but hopefully there is a way to allow smaller market teams to be competitive but still facilitate biggest teams making later rounds of playoffs more often than not. Because Rangers vs Kings or Leafs vs

I have no problem with the national anthems, what annoys me (especially when I was at a game live) was the virtue-signalling that they constantly beat you over the head with.
I disagree with the play-in playoff round, it devalues the playoffs by rewarding mediocre teams and blurs the lines between playoffs and regular season.
The 1 series waiting period for players to come off LTIR is a good one, but one I would suggest would be play in the last x number of regular season games to be eligible for the playoffs. That would force teams to be cap compliant (since it’s regular season) and prevent them from stashing stars on LTIR

I agree that it would not be good if this kind of thing happens more often, but I think the solution would be holding the refs accountable. Maybe post-game interviews like everyone else (although that could have negative influences as well). If the refs are handing out 10 minute misconducts for shoving, there’s going to be more guys in each box than on the bench.
