NYR v2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>Breadman isn't waiving to play in Chicago and Hawks can't decline that trade fast enough anyway.</div></div>
You're probably right re: level of interest of both Bread and Chi for a reunion but for whatever reason keep coming back to it as something I could see happening because:
From Chi's perspective:
Could think it benefits Bedard's development to play with someone who is a current star like Panarin (I do like the Corey Perry addition but also because Bread is still currently one of the top 10 or so wingers in hockey give or take) and probably gives Chi the best chance at playoffs given the lack of comperable talent available at least in this free agent class. There 2 competing schools of thought I see as to how to best develop generational players: 1) put them with kids and let them grow and continue to stock-pile and keep cap and draft capital available and flexible so in 3-4 years time when about to enter prime you can put together the best possible team for that run (risk with this is Bedard developing bad habits on and off the ice from playing many games that probably will not matter and that the prospects you expect to be building around don’t develop the way you are hoping) or 2) surround them with enough talent to where you put them a situation where they play as many meaningful games and are in a winning culture as early as possible.
Obviously don't think its strictly 1 or the other and its more of a sliding scale as to how prioritize team building.
Do think Panarin is probably the only way Chicago acquires the type of top end talent needed to actually try to make a run at the playoffs given the lack of it in this free agent class and the assets you would need to give up for anyone else comparable.
Having Panarin there may also help deflect some of the attention away from Bedard if he isn’t a rocket out of the gate.
Also, strictly financials, probably good marketing move to bring in someone like Panarin who was key part of 2015 and is a brand name star for the casual fan who probably, although it was time, it still sucks it being the end for the Kane/Toews era
From Panarin’s perspective:
He is just not a fit on NYR and there have been loud whispers the organization is not happy with him and his level of compete. Drury strikes me as being someone who wants to change the culture of NYR away from what he (and presumably Sather who has Dolan’s full trust and authority) viewed as the team getting too soft under Gorton/JD. Panarin is the exact opposite of a player Drury values and could see Drury thinking Panarin is undermining his efforts to change the team culture.
I am sure there have been some stern talks between Panarin and Drury about this very issue and I am sure the #1 thing Drury sought to find in a new coach was someone who would be able to get through to Panarin to get him to buy into the system. I imagine, short of winning a cup, Drury will evaluate Laviolette's success based on primarily: 1) how well the kids develop and 2) how well he gets the team to buy into playing his forechecking system.
In the past (especially when you could do it to bury the cap hit), NYR was never been afraid to send a player to the minors no matter how large the contract was (see Wade Redden or Kaspuritus as examples) because Dolan gives Sather carte Blanche. If Drury feels he has carte blanche (which he probably does with his ECF run last year and this type of conduct being consistent with the M.O. of the organizational leaders Dolan has personally trusted in the past) wouldn’t shock me to see NYR bench Panarin and order him to stay away from the team (akin to TDA—although very different circumstances there) in order to have Panarin more open to the idea of expanding the list of teams he would be willing to go to.
Why not go to Chicago with minimal expectations (Chicago isn’t expected to win with or without Panarin although having Panarin definitely helps) and enjoy playing in a place where I imagine he will be loved no matter what he accomplishes from herein out does b/c of his role in ’15. Why not go somewhere where he will play his preferred position, will get to say whoever he wants to play with, and the only measure of his success being whether the generational talent, who is as cant miss as there is, does in fact not miss. Chicago is also one of the few cities that can offer the upscale lifestyle NYC does which clearly appealed to Panarin in FA.
Also, if Chicago were to make a run w/in these next 3 years they have the ability to acquire the talent needed to do so at any point with cap flexibility and a ton of draft capital whereas NYR, which I am sure Panarin probably knows, is pretty much set and there arent going to be massive overhalls anytime soon resulting in a better team in the immediate future given lack of cap and draft capital.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HOCKEYBOY448</b></div><div>Regardless of the trades they really need to do that to Trouba and get rid of him. Make his life as miserable as can be and force his hands. If he doesn’t waive park his ass in the press box and strip him of the ‘C’. A big hit every game or so isn’t that valuable when you can’t wake your team up in a do or die game 7 with the season on the line. That playoff showing has got me wanting to tear this entire team down to the ground and rebuild from zero.</div></div>
Agree 1000%
I doubt Drury will ever blow it up though.
It is one thing to inherit mistakes but Drury keeps doubling and doubling down (Goodrow and Trocheck) by trying to win with this core as currently constructed as opposed to using the resources to address those fatal flaws in roster construction. In the process Drury has sacrificed future picks and cap with terrible long term deals with trade protections and 1 year rentals, without regard for the bigger picture. I personally will never agree with trying to go all in for 1 single playoff run (there are so many weird things that can happen in any single playoff I would rather have 6 years of being a contender vs 1 year of being a favorite) but even that aside Drury the Rangers treated last years playoff run as a sign this core was good enough despite the Rangers only making it to the ECF because Carolina and Pittsburgh's goaltending collapsed + crosby injury + Zib was shooting at a completely unsustainable pace + the kids basically turning into Tampa's triplets line from 2015 + Shesty from game 6 vs Pittsburgh onwards was money + shelling out valuable picks and Morgan for Copp and hitting on Vatarano for basically nothing. Basically, aside from Panarin doing his usual just stay to the boards and throw it across the ice and hope for the best, this team had every single thing going for it.
NYR caught a beat up Lightening team sleeping for the first 2 games --- when the Lightening woke up in the 3rd period of game 3 it went as well the rest of that series as game 7 against NJD did this year. They couldnt get the puck in the offensive zone and when they did it took so much to get it in there they didnt know what to do with themselves.
This past year they looked off the entire season and it was in large part because they were a slower team with less of a chip on their shoulder (despite adding Trocheck who these are things he should be adding to the table) and it was evident at the trade deadline. Instead of maybe saying this probably isnt our year but lets see what happens in the playoffs, the Rangers, go all in on redundant players and put themselves in a situation where they have Fox playing almost 40 minutes for a week 2 months before what they were hoping was a deep playoff run. How in the world do you go through a full season of Zib and Kreider as your top pk unit, shell out assets and not even address that fatal issue (not because they are bad at it but because why put that wear and tear on them when the job should be able to be done for much cheaper).
Its a shame because we really could end up in wasting away another 2 generational talents in Fox and Shesty because Drury is incapable of admitting what isnt working.

I would do it in a heartbeat if NYR. Would even do it w/o the picks because that Trocheck contract isnt going to age well at all

Only way for Miller back to NYR
As much as I like the idea of getting rid of Trocheck's contract (which I doubt Carolina would ever consider on its own, let alone include Drury in as part of a return), I am not a huge fan of JT Miller's contract and, even if I were, I cant see Vancouver agreeing to basically a back-end first that is tied with Goodrow's contract and a throw-in prospect who isnt looking like he is going to light the league on fire as a worthwhile return for Miller

Really dont want to buy out Goodrow b/c while no cap hit this year or next concerned of the $4m+ cap hit that comes up when we have to make the decision on Igor as well as 2nd contract Laf.

Think though Leafs and Rangers fans can probably both agree if nothing else, the reaction from Islanders fans if Tavares went back to NY to play for the Rangers may actually make it worth it.

As much as I want to get rid of Goodrow and not have it be via buyout (b/c while these 2 seasons would be no cap, after that has a big spike exceeding his current cap hit) I would never do that trade

If Im NYR I decline but its close. While I dont think Rutta necessiarly serves a particular need, I would like to see him playing with Schneider or Jones over Trouba (a pipe dream I know) because Rutta can actually play defense.
I think some combo of getting rid of/reducing the cap retention on Goodrow and/or throwing in a mid to late draft pick probably would get it done just because of the shorter contract on Rutta.

Only thing I could think of was either: a) including Chytil (have trouble thinking of what TOR would send back because his contract and upside are arguably best on NYR), or b) Trocheck (good player who competes but is really a very good 3C as opposed to a 2C and who is 30+ w/ a contract I would drive him to the train station just to get rid of but Leafs with their core are a real cup threat and so maybe just want to go all in for this year and worry about cap later)

Goal was to increase financial flexibility long term while also just being a pain to play against. I don't think this team is a cup contender (unless of course Igor has another '21-'22 season in which case all bets are off) but I do think it this roster is better built for a north-south game than last years. Not the fastest team in the world but should be as good as anyone at creating havoc in front off the net. I think long term Tavares would be a great mentor for both Laffy and Kakko as someone who has had those expectations and overcame them.
Wanted to get rid of Trocheck, Trouba, Goodrow contracts but couldn't think of suitors for them where they would waive/couldnt imagine anyone taking on those contracts without a sweetner which NYR cant really do because farm system, as is, is pretty weak on everything except bottom 6 wingers so I prioritized keeping draft picks and creating some flexibility in the future.

Was thinking they might do it b/c of the retainage, liklihood wont want to pay bertuzzi what he will prob get in the offseason after his 2nd half, loss of bergeron's set-up ability on pp1, and how panarin's contract term aligns with Marchand's timeline.
Honestly though had trouble trying to even guess what teams if any Panarin would ever even consider waiving NTC for.

Thinking b/c lack of future assets have to probably retain some cap to move these players but preferable to lengthening the cap hit via a buy out and may be able to get some return when doing that vs nothing also wanted to try to do trades to destinations the outgoing players w/ no-movement/no-trade clauses might consider waiving for
