50Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 5 - TDL additions (Go Big or Go Small)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Might not even be a retention move now that I really think of it. TOR might just send Brodie the other way as part of it to make it work if they serious on adding and cant get ret in place
This is why I said they being quiet. This could be a very complex deal with a lot of risk for either side
But we have seen teams retain on long term before
NSH did it with Ekholm and we did it with Kessel. Gonna be interesting</div></div>
I've voiced my concerns with Toronto moving Brodie a few times in the past. Just from a human point of view, I don't see Brad approaching him for his waiver/no-trade list given what's going on in his personal life.

Like Brad might be to busy going and getting Roy and in extension talks to make this complex trade then
I think something's cooking its just a wait and see. As long as no 1st for rental im good</div></div>
I just don't see St. Louis retaining on that deal which makes it really tough for any team to pull off in-season

Most ideal deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CoryTheGreat</b></div><div>Yeah im sorry but you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think STL management takes that and runs</div></div>
I don't agree.
a) Brodie has little value to them as an expiring UFA...he's clearly tossed in there for cap ballast...plus it's unlikely he'd waive to go to St. Louis
b) Robertson doesn't have much value, himself. 3rd rounder at best I'd say
c) There's too much term left to expect salary retention without having to pay a pretty high premium for it
For St. Louis to bit on a Parayko trade, I think there would need to be 0 retention, and they'd have to basically commit to a re-build (which there's no signs that they're there yet).
If they do go full rebuild mode....then a 1st, prospect (minten) and young roster player (robertson?) isn't a bad starting point as that is the standard asking price for most upper-tier players on expiring deals at the deadline...but it's far from a slam-dunk/easy accept from St. Louis.
Rielly is a very good comparable...if the leafs missed the playoffs what would you want to receive for him in a trade? Would you retain for so many years? Would you be willing to even consider any trade for him if the team wasn't blowing things up? I wouldn't.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Saw it trending my twitter so will give my 2 cents on it
If the Leafs do decide to trade for Parayko then Im only okay with it...IF STL retain 2m so that hes 4.5m. That is more reasonable and u can then pair him with McCabe or Rielly. That said NTU to sending Minten or Cowen in that deal

</div></div>
It's so hard for me to see a Parayko trade happen without some major philosophical shift in St. Louis.
I try and liken it to...if the Leafs missed the playoffs and were looking to re-tool...what would we expect to receive for Rielly? No chance we would want to retain any salary for the length of his deal. No chance we would want to take a 1st and b-list prospects. He's worth more to the locker room than to accept a crap trade.
Same goes for Parayko. A lot of money and a lot of term left on his deal...but he's still their #1 guy and a leader in the locker room. Unless St. Louis goes full blown re-build...a team is going to have to pony up real assets for him and likely take the full salary....and that's likely too risky a deal for most teams who can't afford to have a bad contract on the books if it doesn't work out

Still uncertain which direction Philly will go...but a Walker + Hathaway or Poehling would satisfy both. I could stomach giving up a first if we're doing a RD + bottom 6 and, ideally, one of them has a little bit of term.
I can also see them trying to get Dumba on the cheap and maybe get another forward in the deal although that would be much less impactful, IMO

I think if there's a way to add to the leafs trade with someone like Hathaway or Poehling they might be willing to add a bit...otherwise I'm not sure I see them using the 1st on a pure rental

They do know a 1st at min would have went back right which beats out a 2nd + 3rd + 5th (yes CGY has another conditional 3rd but its chances be low due to all the other good teams)</div></div>
I recall Friedman saying (I think it was just before or just after the Zadorov deal)...that Leafs and Calgary had a deal in place for both guys...and had agreed on a value...but hadn't agreed on the value of Calgary retaining on both and that they made the Vancouver deal because they preferred not to retain.
I think the storyline that Calgary doesn't want to deal with Toronto is being ridden a little too hard. I'm sure there's a little bit of that element there...or knowing how much the other guy wants your player so you drive the bargain harder than maybe you otherwise would...but I don't buy that they were happy taking less from anyone but Toronto

Nope. He’s an nhl defenceman and ours have been dropping like flies.
A 3rd is a meaningless price to play to get a warm body who can give typically consistent, albeit nothing special, performances each game on a squad that’s on a roll and needs to keep pressing forward.

Relax. Boosh isn’t a terrible pickup.
And a 3rd and 6th in a weak draft class is not going to do any harm, even if there’s no other moves made (although I think there will be another trade before the deadline)
To put it in perspective, any dude you can claim off a waivers is gonna give you similar value to what a late 3rd round pick is gonna likely give you
Opportunity cost is another thing. Meaning, what else could that pick have been used for? But lots of rumours have pointed to Treliving burning up the phone lines asking about every Dman with a pulse so fair to assume that he felt this was the best move he could make with that pick.

I consider myself to have been a Willy supporter throughout his leaf career...but that 4th goal last night really pissed me the f* off. The one with the possible Pietrangelo high stick keeping the puck in.
Breakout doesn't work and Willy is just standing with his shoulders drooped on the other side of the blueline watching and doing nothing.

1. Trade for Rasmus Andersson or Adam Larsson (in this case would need it to be Andersson and you will see why).
Rielly-Liligren (fill in temporary could probs get the job done)
Brodie-Andersson
Benoit-McCabe
Then in the summer and this is where step II comes in go get either Roy or Demelo this FA.
Rielly-Demelo/Roy
McCabe-Andersson
Benoit-Liligren
Thats a pretty nice Dcore right there
You make a trade now for someone with term but then in the summer go get the other piece needed to make something even better.</div></div>
I'd expect this to pretty much be the exact strategy. Not necessarily these players...but pick up a RD with at least some term (or who you intend to extend) at this deadline and then add another in free agency with extensions for Lilly and Benoit

This is the time of year when every GM says what they "don't" want to trade away. And I'm sure it's true...it just means the value has to be there in order for them to move off that stance.
D that can play the right side and a PKing bottom 6 forward appears to be the wish list.
If we could attached a Poehling or Hathaway to a Walker or Seeler from Philly we'd be walking away with two of the leagues top PKers which would be worth moving the 1st + for.
For me...gotta plug 2 holes (with at least one of those pieces not on an expiring deal) if a first is going the other way.

As man it was looking ugly for a while and some of those losses u could kind of point to him for not adjusting or calming his team
Like the one sour game hes got out of the 6 is PHI where they blew a 3-1 lead
But the ARI game was good for him as notice when ARI was getting a bit to strong momentum wise he called a time out to settle things down and it kind of worked. Then whatever he said in the intermission also worked
Then against VGK almost the same but no need for a timeout. Team responded well
Now keep going</div></div>
I think the flu bug hitting a few key guys gave him the excuse to move guys (ahem...JT)...out of his regular spot in the lineup and it's worked out well spreading some skill around.
That and getting competent goaltending while Matthews goes on a ridiculous scoring spree helps make everything look a little rosier.
I still think we're better off if we just find a Schenn/Lybushkin type partner for Rielly and a PK'ing bottom 6 forward...all without using our 1st our key prospects. Modestly enhance without any type of "all in".

Predicting Core Four Contracts
I mean....I think we got decent enough value out of his contract for 4-5 years of the 7yr deal. $11m is rich for what has been a point/gm player but that was the cost of bringing in a player with his pedigree.
In hindsight...do you think we would have been better off NOT signing Tavares, keeping Kadri as the 2C (I know his wires crossed too many times in the playoffs for us to put trust in him)...and then being able to re-allocate $6ish million elsewhere over the last 5 years?
