Embrace the Tank
Don't disagree, but unless Seabs waives his NMC Murphy is exposed in the expansion draft. Might as well get the asset for him. WPG after last year lost their top 2 right defenseman. This way they get a serviceable top 4 defender for 1.5 years at a reasonable price. Pitt depends if they're in the hunt at the deadline, but given that the traded a top 9 winger for spare pucks to sign Jack Johnson I wouldn't put a trade like this past them.

Kieth-Murphy
Maata-koekkoek
If Mitchell is ready then Koekkoek sits and it gets shuffled a bit but if he's not it looks like that. As for Colliton/Stan.... I think that they are really on the hot seat this year. If the team doesn't compete and honestly if they miss the playoffs both will be gone I think. I would deffinelty be in favor of the change. Never liked the Colliton hire (thought they kinda rushed him to the NHL) and I don't think Colliton's scheme/system fits our personal very well. As for Stan, I don't hate him as much as most hawks fans do, but I would definelty be in favor of a change. He still thinks Kieth and Seabrook are 2015 Kieth and Seabrook which has been a big problem for us. They have this year ti figure it out out they're gone imo. That's why I think it could be a busier offseason than most expect from the hawks</div></div>
agreed on Stan/Colliton they don't have many more chances left to fix it. Plus you can't fire the coach and let Stan pick the next one. Also with Brodin our defense does look much better. Also this scenario is already outdated Kapanen is being traded to Pittsburgh according to Freidman

Fixing Bowmans Mess
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wadejos123</b></div><div>Interesting points for sure. I still think the hawks are better off not trading Murphy. Yes forward depth is important but I would argue Murphy is currently our best defender. The hawks biggest issue isn't forward depth it's defense. Especially if you're going to ride a 36 year old concussion prone Crawford as the starter. We need to do a better job defensively. The hawks gave up the most high danger scoring chances in the league last year. This defense above if worse than what we had last year.Dehaan needs to go IMO. He was bad in the playoffs, is expensive and injury prone. I think we could get a mid round pick for him, but if we can't move him for free or even throw in a sweetener. Maata-koekkoek should be back next season. Our best shutdown D pair in the playoffs. If possible we need to find someone else on the left side who can take some minutes from Kieth, although it is looking unlikely that can happen. Rolling a defense of:
kieth-Boqvist
Murphy-Mitchell
Maata-koekkoek
works pretty solid IMO. Best case scenario is pulling off a Strome for Brodin trade to try to give Kieth less minutes. Forward depth is nice but it's a luxury. With all the bad contracts, the team is going to have some holes. You kind of have to decide what part of the roster is going to be weaker. We have played the "try to score 6 goals a game and hope you only give up 5" style of play for the last two years. It's time to shore up the defense. Unless we can get Lehner Back or bring in some goalie that can steal games, fixing the defense is our best shot at staying competitive IMO.
Regardless, it was nice to have a quality discussion out this. You bring up good points for sure.</div></div>
Agreed. I appreciate the fact as generally those i talk to on Hockey aren't that knowledgeable of this type of stuff so its nice to be challenged and reevaluate some of things i was thinking. Who would be your sweetner for Dehaan? if you can get rid of him and keep Murphy i would agree its the better option as Murphy has been solid 3 or 4th defender. I really like your D pairings as they have balance and i would switch Mitchell and Boqvist to shelter him with a stay at home defender which allows Keith to be more active in the offensive zone. The reason why i went for forward depth is probably an overly optimistic view of how good Mitchell will be as everything, i have read projects him as not just a great puck mover, but a top 4 defender. If you can get a Brodin for Strome that would be a steal of a trade, but given his season and how he seems to need Kane or DeBrincat to produce i wasn't sure how strong a market for him is going to be plus trading him does bring lockerroom issues.
Though let me ask you would get rid of Colliton and/or Bowman in favor of a new voice at GM or a more experienced coach like a Gallant?

Fixing Bowmans Mess
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wadejos123</b></div><div>You didn't really do anything to "fix Bowmans mess". Strome and Georgiev would get more money which would put you over the cap. NYR probably don't even come close to accepting that as well. Bowman's "mess" is the salary cap which you didn't fix. we can't get back guys like Panarin, Tuevo, or Danault who were traded and probably shouldn't have been, but honestly between good drafting and euro signings Stan has somewhat made up for it. I just don't see how what you did here is better. Team is worse off salary cap wise and worse defensively</div></div>
Strome after both a down year/playoffs and the fact he can only seem to produce with Kane and DeBrincat is not slated to get the $4-6 million like he was at the start of the season. Also as an RFA w/o any arbitration rights he is going to get squeezed and will likely take a smaller deal to stay in Chicago or traded which he doesn't want after a bad experience in Arizona. Plus if you look at his quotes, and the desire to play with DeBrincat it all points to him staying on a lower value bridge deal.
Georgiev hasn't proven himself as a NHL starter, but has shown flashes of skill which point to him as a possible starter his save % is .914. Also don't forget the number has been trending down over past two years. Also back ups do not get paid alot without a proven track record. Also i said in the description the defense has to take a step back. Bowman created a logjam of "okay defenders" with term when he has a glut of high end prospects and with the Seabrook albatross of a contract its not possible to go out and add a high or even a medium priced defender. So next year has to be a step back in order for the Mitchell and Boqvist to cut their teeth in the NHL. Unless you move Matta and another defenseman its not likely Mitchell even has a spot on the roster. Preferably you'd keep Murphy over Dehaan, but injury history makes him a hard player to move particularly in a flat cap world.
However, the team structured as such would have greater forward depth which was a significant problem for them throughout the year. They also have less cap stuck in longterm deals for okay players. Under ideal situations you'd also move Shaw, but i can't imagine any NHL team risking that cap space on a player whose missed something close to a season's worth of games over past two years form concussions. So the team has roughly in an actual scenario 1.2 million in cap space with alot more being likely as the chances Dehaan or Shaw are both on LTIR for a long period of time is high.
Fixing Bowman's mess in the way traditionally thought is nearly impossible you cannot undue his bad trades or magically get rid of Seabrook's contract, a contract that he is not to blame for as what player would demand less money, so what mistakes can be fixed? Making the forward core deeper and removing bad contracts which prevent the next core from having a roster spot. Additionally, as you can tell most of my contracts are short term so the team actually has an ability to hit reset, depending on how the current core and the next core are playing in two years. Also under this scenario, as unless they draft Askarov who won't be there at 17 they don't have a legit NHL starter in the system and cannot pay for anyone other than Crawford on the market they could trade for a potential starter in Georgiev. New York also will certainly trying getting as much as possible, but unless Lundquist retires they're stuck with three goalies and are not in a place of strength in that trade. Getting a quality depth forward and a NHL back up quality goaltender who can also be sent to the minors is about market value on that trade.

Easy. Especially if you turn that 2nd rounder in a 1st rounder you do what Vegas did which squeeze cap crunch teams take on someone who can play a roll (Seabs provides leadership and experience to a new team) get a high prospect who could be a top 4 defender and a high draft pick. We just watched this only a few years ago happen. I mean they said the samething about Reilly Smith and his 5.5 million deal after a few down years.

I would agree, but truthfully i am not sure if anyone would trade for Shaw or De Haan with the injury history. Not sure if Murphy even makes it to this year as Bowman could use him to bolster the forward depth and let the young kids on the blueline have a spot

I did think about putting Kane Toews and Kubliak on a line. The problem is who can you put on Dach's line to make it a threat with Saad. I would put debrincat up there but keeping him with Strome allows for 3 potential lines. Carpenter has been a big part of the penalty kill being so good. Not sure what measure you're using to say Cags been worse than Nylander. Remember Nylander was given better linemates and later sheltered minutes and done nothing with it. I would rather have Sikura in a top 9 role than Nylander. Cags has been noticeable on forecheck and brings an element of physicality while having some scoring touch. Nylander is just a guy.

I would prefer to not move Murphy, but injury history on De Haan makes it harder to move him. Plus when he’s healthy he is a better defender.
What assets did they lose if your trading a back up goalie and a top 9 forward who the coach hates, but can’t bench. You’re not getting him for free and offer sheet means you’ll lose more in salary and draft picks.

Given that the Leafs need to dump Cap and that Nylander is overrated being that he cannot drive offense on his own line and needs a Mathews or Tavares to generate points. Your not getting Pietrangelo, Krug or a Slavin for him. You're not getting a Dehaan or Faulk or Heiskannen. Cap hits in the trade also need to be similar.

Of all the major core players he is both the most expendable and the worst star for showing up in big moments. Trading him for Top 4 defender is the only real option Dubas has as Tavares, Marner and Mathews are going nowhere.

No its not ideal, but much of the reporting and sources seem to indicate the buyout for both is coming. I don't think you can trade Maata in this flat cap with his high cap hit. He is just too slow for the price tag. I would be slow to trade Dehaan because he is second only to Keith on the team for providing quality defensive play.

I agree this team isn't going to get to the playoffs it will be a bubble team at best, but I don't see how you can fully retool when Seabrook's contract hangs like an albatross plus you have Shaw and Dehaan who are useful and good players who have been missing since Nov & Dec. It will be hard to move either with their cap and injury history which essentially gives you $15 million or 18% of the total cap in dead cap space you can't move. However, if they stay healthy they certainly improve the team in a significant manner. Dehaan gives you 3 legit top 4 defenseman.

He is one of those tweeners that is easily pulled up for 4 line work. Perlini is okay to trade he had a great stretch, but was average most of the time or hardly noticeable. Rumors from reputable sources have Chicago shopping both players individually, but with teams not interested in Anisimov a sweetner like Perlini might be used to save money for Debrincat and Strome's second contract which could easily cost 11 million or higher because of Debrincat pulling in anywhere from $8-9 million.

It would be interested to see those two together, I figured Kubalik is more of a score to use in a third line role than Kampf's 4th line. However, they may have Shaw play 3rd line which I am good with. The trade I figured it makes too much sense Torts loves Arty and they need to replenish their roster after losing so many players. Koekkoek is to help clear up the logjam at defense. Although we will need to do something with a Matta or Murphy to eventually make space for the youth at that position. Dach is being given a chance at the roster, but if he needs more seasoning their are plenty of options available.

I agree he's likely going for 6 or higher, but I don't see Chicago going above that amount for any UFA as they're trying to retain cap for Debrincat and Strome. on Term I can see him taking a shorter amount if he doesn't return to the Islanders because it leaves him at 31 where he can still more money.

Back to the Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Very well done and thought out. I think this is one of the most realistic teams I've seen as far as trades and moves.
A couple exceptions....
You are about $1M off on the cap hit for Zingers. While I agree he will give a slight hometown discount, realistically he would still cost the Hawks $4.5M and that would be on a 5 year deal. He is also not a center; he's a middle 6 winger.
I do think Nyquist would be a good fit also.
Given that Faulk is a 1 year rental, I'd remove the picks from the trade, or remove Anisimov and trade him to Buf for a 3rd rounder.
Hawks will be up against the cap next year but they can also carry 21 or 22 players; Crow re-signs for $3.5m to $4m, Faulk or Gus for $4M and let the other guy walk or even both and bring up Mitchell, Krys, Boqvist or Beaudin to fill the spot(s) on ELC's, Cat for $7M, Strome for $5M, and it all should work out.
I'd also rework the lines....
Nyquist (Saad) - Toews - Kane
Cat - Strome - Dzingel
Saad (Nyquist) - Caggs - Perlini
Sikura - Kampf - Hayden (Entwistle)
Kubalik, Johnsson, Highmore, Kurashev are all wild cards...
Defense it will be interesting at some point to see what Carlsson has from the IceHogs and also wouldn't trade Gilbert just yet. Koekk is a decent 7th man but also should see what those two have.
Overall good creativity!</div></div>
Thanks! I thought Dzingel played center early on with the Blue Jackets, but I would still as the Hawks take that bet on Faulk and if he doesn't sign you bought another year of better defense for your draft picks to mature and step into the line up. I really like Beaudin as an under radar guy who can step in because of his high IQ in a couple years. I actually like your lines more than my own as Nyquist and Saad probably don't compliment each other as having them split up. The Gilbert trade was just to start breaking up the log jam at defense as they have an overabundance of guys who can be a 6 or 7th defender.

Kane and Toews will remain high level players for a while, but with Mitchell, Boqvist, Beaudin the defense has a pretty bright future around the corner. Schmaltz and Saad feel like the linchpin for the forwards as more is required of them while Debrincat was the steal of his draft. I don't think the team needs to trade a member of the core (the only one which could be moved is Keith if he waived his NMC) to tank they seem to being doing a good job this season. Add another high profile draft pick/impact player or God willing if they miss the playoffs that they get Jack Hughes (the rest of the league would riot) this team can get one more cup out of the core.
