2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #6: The Quest for Lord Stanley's Cup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CantStopWontStop</b></div><div>I wonder how hard it would be to acquire Necas? It seems like a value challenge:
His performance combined with his size means there’s gonna be interest. Hard to pass on him. Excellent winger to add to a deep team.
But if he’s only looking at premium offensive minutes, Carolina kinda has to value him as if he were a premium contributor…cause that’s what the buyer thinks they’re buying and what the skater thinks they are.
But he isn’t that …. Yet. I’d say he’s a positive contributing top 6 winger, but he isn’t the guy who would automatically get premium minutes over his peers without question . But his age and next contract are very appealing if he is…
Kinda like he might be too expensive to trade? Or that the cost plus the risk gets too high to do the deal? If Carolina does believe he could put up 80-100 points in a different system they can’t give him away cheap, right? There’s a lot of upside but a lot of questions. Really seems like hockey trade situation and I’m struggling to find the magical fit. Who knows - no clue what their front office is planning. I wouldn’t be upset if my team took a shot at him but I would if they paid a super premium to do so.</div></div>
Necas has the skill of an 80-100 pt player. His hockey sense is lacking which is why he’ll never do it

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyScotty</b></div><div>Latvia, Denmark, Norway, France, and Austria are getting more competitive they just need those couple of elite players or quality depth like Germany and Switzerland to have a cinderella type run in a tournament.
England, Poland, and Japan would be awesome countries for ice hockey too</div></div>
The Brits and Poland are definitely on the rise to varying degrees. Norway is another one that I really want to see take the next step. France and Italy are probably the most frustrating because if they cared more they could put together teams comparable to the Germans and Swiss. I don’t know why Estonia and Lithuania can’t follow Latvia’s example? Most of Europe could be at least competitive if the interest grows. As far as Asia goes, Japan would be great but if that was going to happen I think it would have followed the Nagano Olympics when the country went into love move with Hasek and Jagr.

The Maple Leafs have scored more than two goals in just five of their 18 playoff games the past two years and just one of the past 14 playoff games. Woof.
BUT THEY NEED MORE GRIT!

The Canes are up 24-11 in shots yet trail 3-1, Freddy has made 8/11 saves, this feels like a classic Carolina, they do a great job of limiting shots against but it’s not enough

TBH I'm kinda happy with how that game went. I kinda thought the Canes would dominate the Isles but as much as I wanted the Isles to win they at least showed they could put up a fight against the Canes.

This years he’s had one of the worst penalty differentials in the league for a forward</div></div>
I think the refs just tend to notice a lot more when Svech does stuff he's not supposed to do given both his size and reputation.

2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #5: The Final Stretch
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hurricanes_WPG</b></div><div>Honestly that's not far-fetched given era adjustments, a lot of the huge raw goal numbers were achieved in the late 80s and early 90s when overall scoring was way up.
A relatively simple calculation, taking the raw goal number * 82 * 2023-24 goals per game, divided by season goals per game and number of games per team (to account for the fact that season lengths have been changed over time), puts Matthews' current season at number 15 all time if he doesn't score another goal all season, and 10th if he keeps up his goal scoring pace.
Edit: See this calculation for all 47+ goal scorers <a href="https://pastebin.com/jNaJxnSb" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank"> here</a></div></div>
That seems pretty fair, era adjusted stats are kind of their own niche thing where they don't really serve a purpose unless you want to dig deep and compare players from different hockey eras but they're very useful in seeing a glimpse of how stats would stand up through time

Considering goal scoring totals were higher in the 80s and 90s compared to now... I wouldn't call it "cherry picks to write a fanboy article"
I would, though, if the Ovechkin season wasn't high up the list/not on the list or if he were to put an outrageous claim like this is the best goal scoring season ever, etc.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Yes, a relatively simple, nonsense calculation. <strong>And most of those 80s and 90s goal totals were done with wooden sticks, but that never gets mentioned. Or how certain crazy talented scoring teams threw off the averages. Or how clutching and grabbing and hooking and all sorts of things were allowed back then. No two line passes.</strong> Etc etc etc.
When folks start elevating <strong>100% subjective</strong>, cherry picked and inherently faulty stats to gospel, it's just nonsense.</div></div>
You say this... But you have to remember; goalies just started wearing masks, getting the puck off the ice basically meant a goal...
Grant Fuhr won the Vezina while posting an .881... Jack Campbell, this season, had an .873 and was called unusable....
Everyone's faster, stronger and more athletic... Which is why defence is more effective...
It's a different game now then it was before... It's fair to try and use a model to see what a 66 goal season in 23-24 would be equal to (based on rough estimates) in '89-90
As for being 100% subjective, how's that any different from the MVP conversation... There's 4 worthy candidates but there's not a deciding factor, which allows people to be subjective...
