A few trades to fix the cap

Quoting: Caufield

I doubt CGY value Andy more than Mangi, but its an interesting trade

I think Mangi is a more complete 2-way player and has more upside. The only reason this trade is even close is that Mangi had a bad season last year. I think the Flames would consider as they really don't have much size and toughness up front. Anderson would help in this regard. After last season its a pretty fair proposal.

How do they get under the cap

Quoting: RipNasty

The logical move is to move a star player to cut costs? Yeah that's not logical, that's stupid.

Overpaying the core 4 was stupid (especially Tavares and Marner). When a team makes a number of poor decisions you eventually get your back against the wall - this is the reality of where Toronto sits. I did not say trade them for nothing, but the Leafs need to address their "Soft as Butter" defense and their cap issues. Teams won't exactly be lining up to take on Murray, or Brodie's $5mm contact and the fact that Nylander's salary demands are so high lowers his value too. Its the same story with Hellebuyck in Winnipeg.
If this team tries to run it back with this Defense - that is stupid.

How do they get under the cap
Its definitely tricky. looking at the roster construction, the most logical moves would include one of Nylander or Brodie (and take less money back - the exact figure depends on Samsonov's contract). The team could also buy out Brodie $5mm savings this year and then $2.5 cap hit next year. The issue with this is that if they also buyout Murray this would be a combined $4.5mm hit next year ($2.5 Brodie + $2.0 Murray). This is why we see 100's of proposals moving Murray, Brodie and Nylander on these forums.
I think the price it will cost to move Murray, will result in the Leafs buying him out and they still have to address their defense (IMO). They are way to small and soft to defend the front of the net and stop the forecheck, especially when the playoffs start. They could start the season with this group, but they won't contend when it matters if they don't improve the back end.

Tampa Bay Lightning signed Tanner Jeannot (2 Years / $2,665,000 AAV)

Quoting: HockeyScotty

Lots of hyperbole on this contract. It is a fair contract for a physical middle 6 winger that has 25 goal scoring upside. Dunk on the trade all you want but this contract is totally fair and is no way an "overpay".
It's not like he got an Anthony Mantha type deal here.
Mathieu Joseph got $2.95 mil from Ottawa last year
David Kampf got $2.4 million in Toronto
Morgan Geekie got $2 million from a cap-strapped Bruins team
Zemgus Girgensons got $2.5 million from Buffalo while Victor Oloffson got $4,750,000 last year for being a ~25 goal scorer
Daniel Sprong and Klim Kostin got $2 million each from Detroit
Kasperi Kapanen makes $3.2 million
Tanner Jeannot is a great value at $2.6 million under any circumstance compared to those players above.

I agree with you that the AAV is not that bad. However, if I was a Bolts fan I would have wanted at least 3 years considering the price they paid to acquire him. I do think this player will rebound next year. His true potential is to be a Tom Wilson type player. Time will tell if he is more like Wilson or if he is more like Maroon or Deslauriers.

Quoting: GMDannyB

Flyers decline

I agree that the Flyers decline (especially the salary retention part). At the same time I feel like a lot of fans treat Laughton like a bonafide top 6 player. He is a solid 3rd line center on a team friendly contract. His career averages are ~13 goals and ~32 points on 82 game season.
A strong prospect and a 1st or 2nd round pick (depending on the quality of prospect would be a fair price). I agree that the strong prospect is missing here and the salary retention is out of bounds. But what do you feel Laughton's value is?

For the most part, I agree with your comment and I think the plan is to resign Samsonov. But they could go with Woll and Vladar to save cap space this year and next year (ex. ~$3.5-4.0mm for Samsonov vs. $2.2 for Vladar). The Leafs could use Samsonov as a trade chip to help on the back end. It depends on how Treliving feels about Vladar vs. Samsonov.
What would need to change? No way Calgary retains on Hanifin in this proposal. This would not work for the Flames Cap. Otherwise, I think the trade could work for all 3 teams, assuming the Leafs were willing to move Samsonov.

Changing the Dynamic
Trades are pretty reasonable for both sides (and its hard to get people to agree on here). One potential issue with the Columbus trade could be Kuraly who has 10 team no trade list. He is from Columbus and there is a good chance he has all of the Canadian teams on his list.
Overall - I like the injection of youth in the line up. But why is Dube on LTIR (LOL)? Dube would definitely be in the line up and the Flames are talking about a contract extension with him at present.

Opening Day - No More Moves
The Jets have some really promising young players and prospects coming up. But the team needs a culture change and to focus on players that want to be in Winnipeg. .
1) To me this means they need to move Scheifele before the start of the season.
2) I think Hellebuyck could stay, but the Jets need to avoid losing him for nothing. The question is, do they get more value for him now in the offseason or before the deadline? If his salary demands are as high as the rumors indicate, the Jets are not going to get as much value for him as fans believe. People will say "look what they got for Dubois", but he is a 25 year old Center and not a 31 year old Goaltender. GMs around the league see the next Carey Price or Bobrovsky.
3) I wonder if a move to Edmonton would work? Jack Campbell + Broberg/Bourgault + 1st 2nd etc. (assuming Campbell waives his NTC).

Love the Harley trade (for the Leafs). Its close to fair value, but I still think the Stars say no based on his play in the playoffs last year.

Can't see Anaheim taking Muzzin's $4mm salary owed (even if they put him on LTIR and there is no cap issue) for just a 5th. I think it would by the NYI 3rd round (minimum). If they could move Muzzin, they could buy out Murray. I think the draft capital it will take to move Murray will make buyout the best option.
RE: The Team. The Leafs won't be contenders in the playoffs with this defense. No one to clear the front of the net. No one to play physical on opposing forwards (Schenn showed how important this was). They need some size and snarl on defense.

Agreed Weegar would be an ideal partner for Reilly. But it will be hard to pry him out of Calgary. Maybe they consider if Nylander agrees to an extension. Without it, it would be quite difficult. The Leafs would have to blow the Flames away to move him.
I still think Oleksiak in Seattle is a good target, on a good contract (noting Parayko has 7 years left vs. 3 for Oleksiak). Oleksiak can play either side like Brodie. I would be looking at this if I was Treliving.

Agree it does seems a bit high. But there is a precedent that a top 4 defender signed to a LT extension returns a Player, Prospect and 1st. If the Flames retained money on Hanifin which Dallas would need for cap purposes it would be closer. The Stars would need to move money out to make it work. Marchment could be another player the Flames may have interest in but he has a 10 team no trade clause. If I was Conroy, the player I would be interested in would be Thomas Harley (ex. Faksa and Harley), but I don't think Dallas would want to move their young defender after his play in the playoffs last year.

I agree. I can't see Ottawa moving Chychrun. If the Leafs wanted him it would be Brodie 1st and 2nd (maybe a prospect like Robertson too). As you noted Nylander would be an option too, but if the Sens can sign Tarasenko at a reasonable deal I don't think they will be interested.
From the Leafs perspective, I think it would be crazy to pay a high price for Chychrun. He simply can't stay healthy and I would not touch him with a 10 foot pole.

Yzerman was patient, used his leverage and got the deal he wanted, signing Debrincat to a reasonable deal (even if the term is a little short). . I would be annoyed if I was a Sens fan. Kubalik is a UFA next year, plus a prospect, 1st and 4th. The Sens gave up a high 1st (7th overall) 2nd (39th overall) and 3rd to acquire him. This was a loss for Ottawa but Dorian's hands were tied as Debrincat would only sign in certain markets.

Just not sure why it had to be at a major sacrifice in defensive play or at that cap hit, but at least it's only 1 year if it doesn't work. I think if there's one guy you could realistically add to the blue line that would fit the team need and might work with our cap situation, it's Zadorov. Will probably happen at the TDL. Zadorov is a good option. But I think the player the Leafs need is Oleksiak (assuming they can convince Seattle to move him). A lot of people are talking about Pesce who would also be good. I think Tanev could be available at a much lower price and he is a really strong shut down defender who plays a very similar game to Pesce.

Not with that defense. They are way too soft. Who is going to defend the front of the net and rub out attacking forwards.
I was impressed by Schenn's play last year and look how much better Reilly was with a strong defending partner. I think we all know that Tre has more work to do here. They need at least 1 shut down defender (likely 2 defenseman). The signing I don't understand was Klingberg for $4.15mm. Would have much rather had Soucy at $3.25mm or even Ian Cole at $3.0mm for 1 year) These were good signings by the Canucks. The good news is that it is only 1 year for Klingberg. Bottom line is that more work is needed to fix the defense and the cap but this is not going to be easy.

Another Calgary trade

He was a free agent. If you think Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin are a fair exchange for Grzeclyk then thats fine... If you think you're getting 2 first round picks on top of if then thats hysterical. There a reason that Calgary is the laughing stock of hockey fans in the east coast - this is why!!

Wow talk about being conceited and condescending. Always so much class from Boston fans.
My reference is that Boston traded a 1st and 4th for Bertuzzi and he walked as a free agent (hence your hesitation to do it again). The Bruins also paid draft capital (1st, 2nd and 3rd to rent Orlov).
Once again *if you read the proposal*, it noted that both players signed extensions. Every fan thinks their players are worth more then they are. But a # 1 Center and a Top 4 Defender (RESIGNED - as noted in the proposal) are worth draft capital.
Lindholm is much better than Bertuzzi and while Orlov may have more value than Hanifin its not a huge downgrade. The fact that your team paid up draft capital for rentals for similar players and this poposal includes extensions shows you may not be as smart as you think...

Gibson to the kings
I have seen a number of proposals that place a fairly high value on Gibson. While it is hard to assess his value when he is playing on a rebuilding team, a number of proposals in here put him in the same league as Saros/Hellebuyck and I don't think Gibson is in the same class (especially when you consider the contract).
If a trade was to happen between LA and Anaheim, the Kings would probably need to move one of their goalies back noting they already have 3 (Copley, Talbot and Rittich) and the Ducks could use one back if they move Gibson too. Gibson is not good enough to warrant including a player like Kaliyev (IMO).
Gibson (10% retention) for 1) Arvidson, 2) choice of Copley or Talbot, 3) choice of young player Spence or Anderson-Dolan 4) and protected 1st round pick. The Ducks could move Arvidson later for other prospect(s) or picks(s) now or at the deadline. That is the approximate value of Gibson (IMO).

If there is no retention from SJ - then the Pens would need to move another salary out (ex. like Petry) as they are already $2.3mm over the cap and take on another $4.7 in this proposal.
Even if they include Petry, I still think the pens would need to add other prospects or picks too (ex. Owen Pickering and/or Samuel Poulin). SJ is clearly looking for prospects and picks to support their rebuild.
