If everyone waives
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>I have my opinions on almost every organization on what they should or should not do. Doesn't matter that I'm a Leafs fan or a Blues fan, at the end of the day the GMs aren't reading our comments.
Buying out Krug opens up almost his entire cap hit for this season, and 4M for the next, which would allow them to add a 6M player now (via FA/trade) and not have to worry about it the following year assuming the cap goes up at least 2M (which it should).</div></div>
Moving out Krug is the prerequisite to essentially any offseason movement - for the roster spot and the cap money. He probably doesn’t waive to anywhere that would take him. And I don’t think he gets bought out yet, maybe next summer. That’s why I think this offseason will be a quiet one for the Blues. Not a bad thing, just wish they would’ve bottomed out a little harder for these years.

embrace the mini tank
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Briere still wants that Sanheim return for Laughton (they could probably still get a 2nd+ out of him). Even if they tank, there really isn't a reason to undersell him or even move him. He's not going to be able to make much of an impact by himself as a defender. He's still young enough to be an effective player after a rebuild if they can't get a really good deal for him. Trading Couturier would make more sense.</div></div>
coots is practically untradeable but i see what you're saying. my thought process is that, frankly, laughton sucks. he's terrible and he's not getting any better (over the last 3 seasons he has worse numbers than Kevin hayes who was traded for a sixth). teams would bite just because of the perceived value but in reality the flyers would be lucky to get anything above future considerations. he's slightly better than cam atkinson, that says a lot

If everyone waives
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>I can't speak to the Blues plan but if the plan is just to do nothing during their transition phase like A_K said in his thread, then sure trading for Marner is not a good idea. Armstrong must be the luckiest GM right now if that's the expectation.
They should buy out Krug if they can't dump him and try to do something,</div></div>
The plan is to clear space for all the youngsters coming through and about to come through, and build mainly through an infusion on said young players. While they will aim to make the playoffs in 24-25, they are not putting pressure to contend next season. That is not the same as "doing nothing". Re-hiring Bannister might qualify as doing nothing, we shall see.
Clearing space does not mean dumping the 4-5 best players for no reason. It means, yeah, moving Krug as painlessly as possible, if possible. They'd happily move Hayes for a good price. Maybe Faulk, maybe even Schenn.
Not Parayko. He's a cornerstone piece in place. And there's no one around to replace him. Anywhere.
There's also no need to rush into a buyout. Krug and Faulk go to 16-team NTCs next season. They also could rebound and be dealt, though I might bet on Faulk as more of a rebound candidate than Krug. I suspect they would have entertained a Krug buyout more if Forsling made it to UFA this summer. Alas, he did not.

Marner to Philly
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>I remember a Flyer fan saying that he's been a different player under Torts. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the idea but I wouldn't say the Leafs wouldn't be interested since Treliving just might. I think a Marner trade to PHI though would look more like Konencny + Ristolainen (no retention) + a pick or two for Marner + Robertson or something like that. Although, I can't imagine Marner wanting to go to PHI.</div></div>
He's been a different player with Torts and Shaw, just have to remember that he's defensive D, not 2 way play driver, what people were hoping for because of his draft position back in the days.
Agree that if there's trade with these teams, it would most likely be around Konecny+ Risto <-> Marner and maybe some picks to add Robertson/Liljegren and balance the trade.

Boston model
But why exactly? We have Dostal so our future goalie is set
We certainly don’t need to sign Big ol Nikita Zadorov (I wish he was a righty though) as our left side is way to full
Why would anyone pay Amadio 4.5 million? We wouldn’t sign Stephenson either, we don’t need any more centers

Bidding wars for UFAs almost never turn out well for Nashville though i do like Chandler. I just expect him to be getting alot of offers this offseason being one of the better UFA options

If Hunter becomes GM he could pull off a trade for Marner, but it'll include players like Jenner, Laine, Provorov, Boqvist, maybe Kent Johnson.

Canes
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Marner could improve on a new team, but he's not a goal scorer and for a team that's struggled to score trading one of the few guys who can put the puck into the net wouldn't be smart. They are also better served signing Guentzel (if they can) who has been a great fit and has a track record of scoring in the post-season. If they can add Marner after that then sure, but if they are dealing a core player to do so it should not be Aho (it won't be), Jarvis, or Svechnikov.
Guentzel - Aho - Jarvis
Svechnikov - X - Marner</div></div>
Yea I’m not completely opposed to like trading Necas for him or something, but I would worry about the cap room. Doubt we can sign Guentzel for 8-9 and turn around and pay Marner close to 11 easily. Feel like it’s more of a choice between one or the other, and I think Guentzel is better fits our needs.

Right in the edge of being a power house
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Yeah, that's something that fans should worry about if Marner's 11M comes off the books via free agency. There might be guys like Chychrun or Theodore who are the same age or around, but imagine if they end up signing guys like Brent Burns and Orlov instead except the salaries won't be so low.</div></div>
Now there are exceptions. But it's really dangerous IMO to sign Dmen long term contracts that take them into mid 30s. Wingers might be have more shelf life, especially "easy skaters". But even centres can hit the wall suddenly. Leaf have seen in Brodie this year....suddenly he isn't NHL capable. And Tavares' decline has been rapid.

Right in the edge of being a power house
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Lol, I misread the last line of the first post and thought you were saying that the Leafs purposely lose Marner as an own rental, not that he leaves them.</div></div>
Just my opinion, that the Leafs aren't going to resign Marner. Sure they offer him a contract, but Marner can get a better deal elsewhere. So yes in some ways, it's "on purpose", but really it's just spending the cap differently. Sure the Leafs can't replace the Marner production, but players like Knies, Woll, Holmberg need new contracts and have shown they can be long time NHLers. Leafs will be praying the ELC Cowan, MVP in the OHL, can be a good NHLer very soon
One reason I really hated the Leafs awful TDL trades, is they have traded away so many picks that the Leafs haven't had good ELC players playing above their contract. Every year it's the same, trying sign over the hill aging UFA son low salaries

Right in the edge of being a power house
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>I meant based on the potential of being able to sign other good FAs and still having a competitive team. The Leafs know that Marner is a top-line winger that's a superstar that teams pay big bucks for in free agency. Teams don't willingly let those type players go as own rentals and there's a reason for that. CGY didn't willingly let Gaudreau walk, the Islanders didn't willingly let Tavares walk, and CBJ didn't willingly let Panarin walk. Their teams were willing to pay them a ton of money, as opposed to their defensive counterparts in Pietrangelo and Hamilton who were let go when they didn't sign deals that their team were comfortable with. Although, I think even with Pietrangelo, the Blues expected him to cave.</div></div>
I'm kinda confused. Maybe teams don't let players willingly walk, but it's hardly the teams choice is it. It's ultimately the players choice of what 32 NHL teams he wants to play for.
But teams also decide on how to use their cap.
For instance if my wife and I have 100,000 to spend two vehicles......It could be Cadillac and a Corolla. but other choice is an Accord and Camry. What is better value?
It the same with the Leafs,,,,got 14m to spend on two players.....12m for Marner and a 2m Dmen or 7m for a RWer and a 7m Dman

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Pinto is nice but he doesn't project to be a 1st line C and at 7th, SJ could get a really good player but there's a lot of potential for things to go wrong, so I don't think they would accept. Considering that SJ has the 14th OV as well, they might as well take the easy pick at 1, and they might possibly pick up someone who is nearly as good as whoever OTT gets at 7th at 14th considering that this draft is filled with a ton of defenders.</div></div>
Absolutely fair.
Pinto is projecting to be a very good 2-way second-line center who can get 65-70 points a year.

Zadina not coming back. Graf and Guschin on the 4th line where PK, energy, hitting, fighting guys goes not my personal favorite. Might as well have them go to AHL and play first line minutes? What does sigining Reinhart do towards the tank? Two more great years to at least be in position to get a decent lottery chance. He's not enough to get you into the playoffs and the defense still sucks
Skjei would be dope though
