Goalie depth. The 1.8M cap hit makes him unlikely to get claimed off waivers. Once sent down, only 650K counts against the cap and he gives the Leafs an experienced third string that can win games at the NHL level, in case of injury.

The purpose behind taking DeSmith back is to have a third string capable of winning games in the NHL, should Sammy or Woll get hurt. With the 1.8M cap hit, the hope is he would clear waivers to be sent down, to be utilized as depth.

100 point player? One season, he’s 29 years old and a UFA after next season.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aedoran</b></div><div>Not really he won't go to the dirty areas on the ice and that's been his problem most of his career. That still leaves the 4th line RW spot open. You also have Nylander who only played 54 games last season because of his hold out. Engvall has played 44 games mostly playing RW but he is a LW. if Bracco was any good after 3 years in the AHL he would've been called up at least once or maybe even traded. He's an AHL player at best.</div></div>
Couple things.. the Nylander hold out was the year before last. Bracco was the MVP of the Marlies Calder Cup run that year... also, Engvall played more as a LW/C than he ever did as a RW for the Leafs last year. Bracco had an off year in the A last year after having an excellent one the year prior but I think it was due to a beef that he felt he should get a roster spot and a spot was not made for him. There was talk that he requested a trade and he actually stopped playing for the Marlies before the deadline and didn’t come back before the Covid stoppage. He may be a career AHL’er but he may also not be. Too soon to say at this point, in my opinion. You are also entitled to your opinion as well, it just doesn’t seem to be a well informed one.

Hard to make that claim when he hasn’t been given the chance. This is why he wants a trade, should have been given a look. He’s not suited for the 4th line and has been stuck behind Marner, Nylander, Kapanen.

I see where you are coming from. Jarry still hasn’t played 200 NHL games, so you don’t necessarily know what you have in him for certain, at this point. I could see Andersen excelling even further with a team that supports him better. Maybe the pick could be optional and become a higher selection under the conditions that Andersen doesn’t resign, or the Pens don’t make it past the 2nd round of next year’s playoffs? If a deal involving Andersen and Murray can’t appease both sides, Toronto could also just sign a UFA goalie and trade Andersen for picks/prospects somewhere else. Just doing this for fun based off the rumours.. lol.

NJ wouldn’t be interested in a sure thing, in exchange for a player who has not played a single game in the NHL yet? Nylander immediately helps retool NJ with a skill set and position of need. He is also coming off a 30 goal season in 60 games, is still just 23 years young and is signed for multiple years on a cost-friendly contract. Nylander was also a former 7th overall pick. NJ has pieces in place to be able to compete sooner rather than later. Nylander helps now, the 7th overall will likely take a few years to contribute.

Andersen is the better goaltender in my opinion. Only reason Toronto makes this move is because of his pending UFA status after next year. They will not be able to afford the cap hit on his next contract. Referring to him as a “spare part” is a pretty ignorant comment, respectfully speaking.

Fair enough. The thought process is that Yzerman may feel that trading for a skilled guy with a higher upside may be worth giving up a guy like Smith. Toronto is trying to bolster their depth while trading away a guy that has requested a trade due to the fact that his team doesn’t have room on the roster for another guy of his skill set.

Offence will need to be downgraded in the short term to balance out the back-end. AP is solid at both ends of the ice.
The pick for Nylander eventually replaces him, and with an ELC for three years.
Andersen may be the better goalie but he is a UFA after next season and Toronto won’t be able to afford the cap hit on his next contract.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Driedger18</b></div><div>Where is Travis Dermott?</div></div>
On the Marlies waiting for an injury to occur. While he is likely NHL ready, with the team’s depth and the fact he’s on an ELC, he starts in the minors. I don’t think it would hurt his development to spend a bit more time in the AHL to master his craft. Maybe management decides to trade Gardiner to recoup a high pick to replace the one sacrificed to pick up Tanev, if Dermott proves to be over- ready, at some point before the deadline. Could be a good idea rather than losing him for nothing like JVR. We Also have Rosen, Borgman and Lilijgren waiting in the wings.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Philvr</b></div><div>I just don’t like getting rid of picks espically first round for a guy that hasn’t played a full season ever. Pateryn is not a second pairing player and I think Derek Ryan is only a fourth line kind of guy but he would be a good addition.</div></div>
The team is seemingly stuck in limbo, until the right defensemen can be brought in to help balance things out.
In order to bring in a top flight guy, some sort of sacrifice will have to be made. A healthy Tanev is a great fit, at a good cost, on a shorter term deal. You’d have to figure next years’ first would be late and the prospect pool is currently in great shape. It could be a better option over flipping a guy like Nylander, which would weaken the offense. Their seems to be depth that could fill in for Tanev should he need games off to stay healthy.
Take a look at Pateryn’s numbers last year with Dallas. It was only one season but he proved to be an effective second pairing guy and a beast on the PK.
Ryan is basically a smaller but faster Bozak, who will likely be more cost effective. He can provide all the same skills that Bozak did (secondary scoring, PP, great at faceoffs, good with puck possession) and averaged the same amount of ice time as Bozak last year (15+ minutes per game). He’s not a fourth line guy.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mitch11</b></div><div>"We want to win the cup next year? Let's get Derek Ryan, Greg Pateryn and Luke Glendening!" -Kyle Dubas 2018
I am mostly kidding. It would be nice to get another (good-ish) center or two, but what about Aaltonen? He should be in the middle. Otherwise, I do not think Pateryn is the addition that we need to the defense. I like the idea of getting Tanev, although a slight bit more incentive might be needed.</div></div>
Keep in mind that this would be the line up to start the year, not heading into the playoffs. Decent complementary pieces added but also room for some young players to crack the team.
Aaltonen is unproven at the NHL level. He would have to earn his spot, whether it be at centre or wing. I felt Glendening was needed to help replace the effective PK minutes that will be absent with Komarov departing.
If you followed Pateryn last year, you would realize that he quietly had a strong season, averaging over 19 minutes a night on Dallas’ second pairing, with a plus 6 rating. He also logged the second most minutes of any Dallas player, on their PK unit, which finished the season ranked 14 out of 31 teams. He is a perfect fit beside an offensive partner like Gardiner. He’s a shut down guy that also provides some physicality and strength, which would be welcomed with Polak walking.

Ducks
Top line LW for a top 4 D and B level prospect along with a 2nd rounder for a bottom pairing D. Seems fairly even to me. Duck are lacking lw'ers and are set to lose either Manson or Silfverberg to expansion. Also doubt they want to pay Fowler's next contract seeing as they are deep at the position.

It's Tanev not Muzzin. Vancouver appears like they are finally ready to start a rebuild. Leivo seems to be a decent prospect who doesn't get the chance to blossom on a crowded Leaf team. Him along two 2nd rounders and a temporary rh replacement on the blue line would hopefully be enough. It would kick start the rebuild for Van and give the Leafs an upgrade in their top 4.
