I would generally agree with both of you. The Oilers are looking good right now, so there is no need to go panic mode and change the whole roster. I am no fan of trading away every asset either, thats why i didnt went for guys like Saros or Vatrano, who would change the chemistry in the roster suddenly taking huge impact roles and would leave the team with literally no future assets. But i still think there are holes in the team to adress, and while McDavid and Draisaitl surely want a long term plan on being competitive in Edmonton, they also know that they are in contention right now and want to see the management being active to improve their chances, as it will be difficult to remain a top contender for years when the two of them will likely make 30 mil combined with their next deals.
Trading Ceci to Tanev is the big impact move here, as i think he is the better defenseman and could also have a huge positive influence on Nurses game. If you look at the last 4 cup finalists, 3 of them had at least one of these big trades:
Vegas: Barbashev
Florida:/
Colorado: Lehkonen and Manson
Tampa: Hagel and Paul
Mabe the proposed trade with San Jose creates this feeling of "trading every future" because getting rid of Campbells contract alone is so expensive. I just think thats a price you have to pay going forward (or you choose to keep the futures but limit your cap space with the buyout). Blackwood is the solid second goalie you need, at least for the case Skinner gets hurt and maybe he can get hot and be the better goalie. Duclair, who is not having a great season, is more like a bet, if he can imprve in a new environment with a player like Leon as his center. This depth moves (like Vegas made with Blueger or Quick) can be huge, if you just look at all the injuries Florida had after playing three rounds of playoffhockey last year.
