Considering Arizona's 2022 2nd is basically a late 1st, this isn't as crazy as it seems if Toronto views Geekie as a top 10 talent like Arizona almost certainly did when they moved up to take him at 11.

Pending UFAs never get full value. That's the reality of trading them. A top 10 talent, and two possible first round talents is a massive haul for a pending UFA who has a NMC. His NMC does not kick in until July 1st, but it still will shape the market for him because if he says he only wants to go to Arizona, or that he doesn't want to sign anywhere until testing the market next year, teams aren't going to shell out huge assets for him.

The Karlsson trade is probably the closest comparable out there in terms of this level of star getting traded as a UFA. Karlsson didn't have a NMC, although the clock was ticking for Ottawa to make a deal due to how acrimonious the situation was. At the time of the Karlsson trade, Norris was comparable to Lamoureux. Dorion has gone on record that he projected Norris as a 3rd line C who might top out as a middle 6 type guy. He wasn't expected to be a star. The 1st round pick was projected as a late 1st and wasn't even available to the Senators for an additional year. Then they got a 2nd. Balcers and Demelo had little or no value. Tierney was a solid young top 9 forward at the time.

The above package as it stands today is better than the Karlsson package as it stood when Karlsson was traded. There was a lot of fluff in the Karlsson package, but really it was four pieces that had any value Norris, Tierney, 1st, 2nd.
