<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>hockeynutter</b></div><div>The problem with the defense is outside of Reilly zero puck movers. The new NHL is fast and the defense needs to be able to move the puck up the ice. Makar, Toews, Hughes, Hronek, petrilangelo, Theodore, Josi, Letang, karlsson, Byram, dahlin, power, oel, ekblad, doughty, bouchard, ekholm, I can keep going on a huge list of defenseman. The problem with this defence core is Benoit, edmundson, lyubushkin, McCabe and demelo are below average puck movers. This will keep the puck in our zone too long. Not that those defensemen are bad but we need a defenseman like Liljegren or equivalent added because they are good puck movers as well. An ideal pairing is like Reilly demelo, ???, ??/Liljegren, Benoit /McCabe, edmundson could be ???, but we still need one more for good depth. Reilly has shown to prop up lyubushkin, Hainsey, Schenn etc... because he is a good puck mover. I get the idea where we need grit and toughness on the blueliner but everyone forgets that Tre had Andersson, Hanifin and weegar on defense as well. It was not all Zadorovs and Tanev s.</div></div>
I do agree with your take on puck moving Dmen, but I just dont see a viable option on creating a dominant D corps with at least 2 puck moving studs with the cap space they have. I just dont see Lilly as part of the future. I wish I did, but he is prone to making mistakes & gets beat to often by hard forechecking teams. The hockey-sense and play under pressure has been a knock on him since his draft year. Lets wait and see if he actually plays in the playoffs though. If not, I think the writing is on the wall.

Texier and Peeke
Lol. Should cost "next to nothing"... but you pay two 3rd round picks... Honestly though, Peeke might be the worst defenseman in the NHL, and he's signed at 2 more years at $2.7MM. He can't even get playing time on the bottom pairing of one of the worst teams in the league. They can't even get him in the lineup to "shop" him, he's that bad. I don't even think he's worth a 7th rd pick for him double retained. Texier is a meh, I wouldn't be against sending a lifetime AHLer like Abruzzese or a 5/6th. CBJ's Danforth would be my pick of the lot.

Next year
I think this is as close to realistic as it gets! Props brother.
That being said, here are a few of my thoughts: (tiny nuances, just things that I think to be similar/swapped)
-I just can't see Roy signing here, but would love him as Mo's partner. I really don't know if the Leafs will be able to land any of the top UFA RD's without overpaying (which the Leafs won't be able to do). I think the main options will be signing a couple solid 2nd tier guys (Tanev & Demelo?)
-With McCabe playing great hockey on his off side with Benoit, I wouldn't be opposed to keeping them together and going after one of the better LDs on the market to pair with Lilly.
-Cant wait to see both Minten & Cowan in the show, but next year is probably too early, especially for Cowan (even though he might already be better than Minten, Minten is probably more 'pro-ready'). One thing is clear I think: A young gun will win a roster spot out of camp, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Grebyonkin or Tverberg were to do it eitehr, and Holmberg will be definitely taking the other spot in the lineup.
-I believe in 'snot' and while Reaves isn't the guy, I would love to see just one more injection of size & grit to the bottom 6. (Duhaime? Clutterbuck? I dunno, they're not the greatest, but I can't think of anyone at the top of my head...).
-Banking on Woll & Jones to carry the load for the year is a bit too scary for me. I guess if things were to go south, Tre would have to acquire another G, but without cap space, I guess the only path would be to clear out one or both of Kampf/Jarnkrok?
Anyway, all that being said, if I were to construct a CF roster right now it would probably look exactly like yours LOL. It's just how I see Tre building the squad going into next year, especially if the Leafs get through the first round again.

Trades
I would love McBain but ARI will value him at a 1st for sure. Cheap, young, term, plays hard. Anything less wouldn't be worth ARI moving him. Steeves doesn't really have any value, maybe equal to a 6th. Timmins neither, maybe a 5th at most.
Carrier not retained is probably going for a 2nd or early 3rd. Retained, closer to a early 2nd or type of package with decent prospect(s).
Fleury deal is probably close, again the retaining increases the cost but unretained he's probably worth a 3rd. Jones doesn't hold much value to MIN, maybe they flip him to a contender as cheap depth. Abbruzzese is in the same boat as Steeves. They seem to be career AHLers who might play 5-10 games max per year. Think of Joey Anderson, Adam Brooks, Kenny Agostino. Teams would prefer their own lottery picks.

Rebuilt Defence
Well done. Nothing sexy, but realistic. Everything here is reasonable. I dont know if CHI would retain on Murphy for 2.5 yrs though after doing it with McCabe, the nect few years are different circumstances now tbat they have Bedard in tow.

1M too much for both Benny & Robby.
Carrier & Pesce is probably what the open market will award them, but I think both about 500k-1m overpaid maybe...

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Newtown</b></div><div>Why does everyone think the Leafs will be better by trading away a 100 point Selke nominated forward in their prime? Have a look at the first 7 years of players like Stamkos, McKinnon etc. etc. Most players coming into the league don’t win cups right away. It takes time and patience to put all the pieces together.</div></div>
Have you ever watched Stamkos, MacKinnon, etc. etc. play, in the playoffs??? These guys would rip their opponents face off in order to win. They’ve got bite. They elevate their game in the playoffs. They are ‘F’in gamers’. They are everything Marner isnt. 100pts in the regular season & Selke candidate doesnt mean squat. When the playoffs come around, Marner becomes a pure perimeter player who gets pushed around and has ZERO pushback. As a die hard Leafs fan of 30+ years, I wish people like you could see that Marner has absolutely NOTHING on Stamkos, MacKinnon, Crosby, Point, Kucherov, Kane, Toews, Dustin Brown, the list goes on and on. He wont be traded for a bag of pucks, but pleaaaaaaase stop comparing this blob of soft melted butter to the Stamkos and MacKinnons, frankly its embarrassing.

Who knows
I like your thinking, but as Caniac said, I think Leafs would be hard pressed to get Pesce for Willy 1 for 1, let alone adding Suzuki and 2 2nds. You probably have to remove the 1st from Philly and add on the Leafs side too. Marner is probably Konecny+Tippett (which I doubt Flyers would even do), and Provorov is probably worth more than Timmins+3rd…?
I dont see any scenario where Bert signs for the Leafs. unfortunately. I think it was pretty clear he wasnt coming to a Cdn market. Brown at 3M and on the top line? Eeeek

Kane gets to decide where he wants to be dealt. The team he will waive to holds all the cards. Why would a team offer more than a 1st?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GenXHockey</b></div><div>I'm thinking dubas is filling spots internally. But that doesn't go with your theme.</div></div>
Honestly I do too. I dont think Mizzin gets moved, so the limited cap space gets filled up by the Envgalls, Abruzzeses, Holmbergs, etc. I just dont see any of these guys being difference makers. Going to rely even more on AM & MM this year as JT keeps regressing offensively and doubt Robertson is really ready for top 6 role yet

Leafs Lets Be Real
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>Not really
Sandin will probs get a Pealch deal 1.6x4yrs
Campbell a Jarry deal 3.5 x 4yrs
Liligren if not traded his QA 863,333
Rielly 6.5millx8yrs
So how do they fit everyone
Well for starters Foligno will be on a 1 year deal and not 2. So that 2mill comes off the books
That 2mill than divided amongst Sandin and Liligrens extensions and a bit of campbells
Mikheyevs money also is added to Campbells extension
to fill Roster spots cheap guys like Joey Anderson, Alex Steeves, and other prospects make the jump
Riellys extension will come from Phil kessels retention coming off the books.
I did a 2 year plan with the team and they honestly can fit everyone pretty comfortably as when you consider prospects could make it to the NHL it changes things.</div></div>
Forgot about the Kessel $! I agree with most of what you’re saying, and hope that can happen but if Campbell has another big year and carries a bigger load, and Leafs banking on paying him Jarry $, he gone. I think you are predicting best case scenario before the season starts, not knowing what happens, I dont think the Leafs risk handicapping their cap for next year by predicting low salaries like that. And reallocating Mikheyev’s $ will only be whatever difference between his current $ and the next ELC call up, so maybe 700-800k.. not enough for Soupys raise either way. Overall, though I’m hoping you’re right on those points.
