Upon further review, if they have not been claimed, the Sabres would rather keep a 9th LHD and 3rd GK over 13th, 14th forwards.
Depth defensemen and GK's are far more valuable than forwards in a playoff run, while giving up draft picks is not good asset management.

<strong>First,</strong> Dumba may be available at about half of that, $3,000,000.
<strong>Second,</strong> Petry would be a huge upgrade over Lyubushkin not sure if the Sabres want to give up on Luukkonen just yet.
<strong>Third,</strong> if offered Buffalo would make that trade.
Over the past 7 years Buffalo has drafted really well, and two more picks in the first round next year could just be the icing on their prospect cake.

<strong>First,</strong> Very lively conversation with excellent POV.
<a href="/users/Czu8iks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Czu8iks</a> nailed it, we have our RHD and for the first time in forever have balance with 4 LHD and 4 RHD.
Petry would have been an ideal RHD addition. He hits, blocks shots, eats minutes, PK's, PP's and can score, but we now have Johnson in that spot.
<strong>Second,</strong> Buffalo could use the picks as trading chips in future TDL's, so they could have significant value.
<strong>Third,</strong> Actually cap will not be an issue in 2024-'25, it the following year after Petry's contract expires.
Check out this team, https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/4452419 the following year (2025-'26) when Quinn, Peterka, Johnson and Levi will want to get their raises after their ELC;s expire some difficult decisions will have to be made.
<strong>Finally,</strong> since the Penguins seem to be interested with Karlsson, Petry may be part of the trade so the Sharks do not need to retain as much salary.

Off Season into Deadline
<a href="/users/TMLBRIAN" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@TMLBRIAN</a>
An upgrade of Hart over Luukkonen is significantly less than a first.
Over the past 3 seasons Hart's SV% was 0.900 while Luukkonen's was 0.898, that is 2 more saves every 1000 shots, or about 4 more goals given up in a year (presuming 60 games)
Toss in tht Hart's salary is 3,141,500 higher than Luukkonen, even a small differnce melts away.
Buffalo will be using Levi, Luukkonen and Comrie for the year.

Done!
Good input!
There could many other moves.
Casey, Ryan johnson and another young player could be packaged for a young Adam Larson type to balance LHD with RHD.
They are traded not because they are bad rather they are good and have value.
The LTIR are current prospects in order by NHL probability.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoreHitzSeider</b></div><div><strong>Levi is the real deal in my opinion.</strong> Stick with him. Don't need Helly.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres89</b></div><div><strong>I don't like the hellebuyck idea.</strong> With his contract demands, I view him as a straight rental, hard stop. What's the absolute most you would pay for a straight rental goalie? A protected first? Even that's too much for where we are in our development. I feel Jets fans pain, it sucks to make your peace with moving a star player only to realize that you've lost a ton of leverage and there's nothing you can do about it. Even with the projected salary cap increases for future years, <strong>there aren't many, if any, teams willing to throw that contract at hellebuyck.</strong> So there's no market to potentially drive up the price.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheEarthmaster</b></div><div>Don't necessarily think Hellebuyck is a wise investment for the Sabres but just pointing out that if you were to have Hellebuyck you would not have both Levi and Luukkonen to give raises to (since Hellebuyck would be taking one of their rosters spots) and likely a younger player such as Krebs or Mittlestadt or Jokiharju would need to go back to Winnipeg to get Hellebuyck in the first place. <strong>If you pay Krebs and Greenway 6.5 million dollars to be fourth liners, then yeah suddenly you're not going to have any cap space for Hellebuyck.</strong>
There's a world in which Hellebuyck can totally fit under the cap for the Sabres, the question just really is "is it smart to give a 30 year old (admittedly elite) goalie 9million or so dollars for 6-8 years" and <strong>the answer is no probably not.</strong></div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CB37</b></div><div>Someone is going to have to go from the top 9, for <strong>Kulich, he's not a 4th L LW.</strong></div></div>

That was exactly the purpose of this post.
With 9 (NINE) ELC's on the roster, there is only $6,240,000 room without Hellebyuck.
Olofsson in gone and as <a href="/users/CB37" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@CB37</a> Kulich will not be on the fourth line, someone else has to go.

Excellent, better than many Sabre fans.
Definitely like how you paired LHD with RHD.
We will see how Granato wants to build the team but you are correct to keep at least two of the defensemen.
Comrie may be lost to the waiver wire as the Sabres can only carry 23 players, maybe he gets <em>injured</em> in the preseason LOL.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Offseasonfantasyy</b></div><div>Yep lol, buffalo is in an interesting spot, you don't want to trade prospects but at some point all the spots are filled...and then they will have too, if I was gm I would do it sooner than later with a hockey trade that adds a little experience to the group, still lacking a goalie but Levi doesn't seem to far away.</div></div> You are correct, Buffalo has a great line up and better future.
Buffalo will have two spots to fill next year, Girgensons and Okpooso.
Jost is a waiver claim and this could also be his final season with the Sabres.
That is three forward spots that could be vacant next year, <strong>Buffalo does not have to trade prospects</strong>.
Take out Girgensons, Okposo, and jost while inserting Savoie, Kulich and Benson and you will get even more excited.
Adding Konecny, and Laughton while making another hole at RHD (Jokiharju) is not good asset management.
The Sabres will probably continue stocking their prospect pool, signing players to team friendly contracts as Thompson, Cozens and Samuelsson did.
If a player does not sign a contract commensurate with the Buffalo Cost of Living, they will be traded either to fill holes in the line or picks.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMDannyB</b></div><div>I don’t see them moving Krebs but if you swapped him for Rosen and take out Rousek I could see them maybe doing it?
Tk for 1st, Rosen, Joki
Laughton for Ostlund and Olofsson
Maybe that’s fair? Idk It would be essentially two 1sts and a 2nd for Tk which is around what the flyers want and then a 1st and a dump for Laughton which is probably less than what they want but the TK part of the trade makes up for it</div></div> <strong>"a dump"</strong>
This is refering to Olofsson?
So Victor scoring more goals over the past four seasons than Boeser, make Olofsson a <strong>DUMP?</strong>
Olofsson will play next year at half the cap hit as DeBrincat yet had one more goal than Alex last year, who played 500 more minutes with Pinto and Batherson as his primary line mates, this makes Olofsson a <strong>DUMP?</strong>Buffalo may trade him as they may have other forwards who can fill his spot who will be on ELC's, but he is certainly not a <strong>DUMP!</strong>

Olofsson has a $2,000,000 lower cap hit and more goals than Boeser over the past four years yet played in fewer games.
DeBrincat with double the cap hit, played 500 more minutes last year but score one less goal dispite having Batherson and Pinto as his line mates.
He probably will be traded before the end of the season to reduce the cap, and make room for Savoie, Kulich or Benson, but it is foolish to trade him now when Quinn will be out for half the season.

When he joined Casey and Henri, the third line started producing nearly 2 pts per game.
<strong>Second,</strong> with Savoie, Kulich and Benson in the wings, Olofsson, Girgensons, Okposo and Jost will be cap casualties soon.
Okposo will finish his career as a Sabre but Jost and Olofsson could be traded at the TDL.
<strong>Third,</strong> Cogliano could be a real asset on the Sabres PK.
He had nearly double of the PK time of any Sabre, and blocked more shots than any Sabre forward.
<strong>Fourth</strong>, the Sabres add a third round pick, that could lead to a player in their prospect pool.
<strong>Fifth, which was over looked,</strong> he has 120 games of NHL playoff experience.
<strong>Most important,</strong> if Pegula got wind of this trade and KA did not take it, Terry would fine him $1,175,000, the difference between Jost and Cogliano salary.

The future is bright.
Jost, Girgensons, Okposo are the obvious forwards who could be replaced by Benson, Kulich and Savoie next season.
Olofsson, Greenway and Mittelstadt potential cap casualties who may be on the team in two years but could be replaced by Ostlund, and Rosen.
In four years when Skinner's contract expires, we may see Wahlberg take his spot.
Bryson may be replaced by Johnson as soon as this year.
Erik Johnson is most likely a one year fix,
Stillman is young and could be around for a few more years.
I am more excited than ever now, especially since they came so close last year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabresparaavida</b></div><div>No the Sabres would not be interested in that deal. Laine hasn’t played a full season for 4 straight years. Mitts also had more points than him last year, and Jack Quinn had a very promising rookie season. Adding on top of that is ridiculous, especially considering Laine’s contract</div></div> <div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cannon4cbj</b></div><div><strong>So if I take the third off the table you’re in?</strong></div></div> This is brilliant: "So if I take the third off the table you’re in?" :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh
Let's be frank here Laine is a huge upgrade over Casey and maybe Quinn, but trades as this was Tim Murray's big mistake, the Sabres had no depth.
A terriffic top line of Kane-Eichle-Reinhart
Two thirds of a second line ??????-O'Reilly-Okposo
AHL players on the second line
A very solid fourth line Girgensons-Larsson-Foligno
Even less defensemen depth after McCabe and Ristolainen the Sabres had Bogosian, Pysyk, Franson, Gorges, Weber.
So Laine may appear to make the Sabres better, but they lose their depth.
Casey Mittelstadt was able to jump into the top line center slot the last month of the season when Thompson was not 100% and scored 17 pts in the last 11 games.
That is depth and it would be gone.
<strong>"considering Laine’s contract"</strong> absolutely kills the deal as that is over $1,000,000 more than Thompson or Cozens.
So while you ask for understanding, you need to understand as well the ramafications of bringing in a player earning that much.
You may point to Skinner who earns more, but over the past two seasons Jeff has 20 more goals than Patrick.
<strong>This would be a really bad deal for Buffalo.</strong>
It would hurt their cap, possible hurt their locker room, definitely hurt their depth and not significantly upgradt the team even if it was only Casey one for one.

Levi may at some point go down to get seasoned if he struggles but to start it is Levi and UPLs cage</div></div> Buffalo now has 8 solid NHL defensemen after adding Clifton, Johnson and Stillman, replacing Fitzgerald, Pilut, Clague and Bryson who played a total of 132 games last season.
It is most likely that Power, Quinn and Peterka will have break out years just as Cozens and Mittlestadt did last year.
While Comrie and Luukkonen did not play as well as expected unless one of them is lost to waivers, Buffalo will still have three NHL GK with Levi a Calder finalist.
This team has great depth when a 3rd line LW (Casey Mittlestadt) can step into the top line center postion over the last month of the season and kick out 17 pts in 11 games.
While the NHL pundits all are predicting the Sabres to be a bubble team, my big bold prediction is they will reach 100 pts.

Sabres
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres89</b></div><div>I'm inclined to agree with you, I don't think adams and granato put as much weight on it though. There's more than one way to skin a cat, they say, and we are gonna get a chance to see if they are right. I thought it was bizarre, adams pursuit of hanifin, adding yet another lefty would have given us a top 4 of lefties <strong>Completely agree, maybe it was all media hype.</strong>and a bottom pair of righties unless you intended to drop Samuelsson down to 3rd pair and play everybody closer to 20 minutes. It'll be fun to see what they do, it should be obvious if it's not working, I don't expect upl or comrie to cover for any defensive deficiencies. <strong>But Levi will!</strong></div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rktkt66</b></div><div>Never dismiss the copycat tendencies of the NHL - Vegas won the Cup in large part because of their depth, especially on defense. ...given how thin the Sabres' defense was last year and how that forced Granato to overplay Dahlin, Power and Samuelsson, <strong>It is bemusing how people over look Jokiharju. He played only one less minute than Samuelsson per game and nearly 2 minutes of PK. Granato has faith in him and Henri's ice time over the last dozens games actually increased.</strong>...
The pattern where teams could just roll out their top 2-3 defensemen over and over like we used to see seems less pragmatic now where the parity around the league is so close. My hunch is that, based on the signings they made and possible other changes by camp as well as on what Granato said in his interview last week, the Sabres will try to balance their usage of their defensemen more. Ice time that Power used to get on penalty-killing will be shifted to Clifton and Johnson; ice time late in games to protect leads will see less of Samuelsson and more of either Clifton or Johnson. Even if the Sabres add someone like Hanifin, I think the Sabres will try using the same approach of spreading out ice time amongst all 6 defensemen.</div></div> Obviously put your trust in Granato.
Power and Dahlin will get still get the bulk of the ice time, but the bottom pairing, whoever they are will play significantly more than the 15 min/game as they did last year.
Let's hope Bryson can rediscover his game that prompted Adams to give him a 2 year $1,850,000 contract.

More than DeBrincat while playing 500 fewer minutes.
Over the past 5 years he as more goals than Boeser while playing in fewer games.
No one from Vancouver would give him away for a 6th OA 24 yo AHL forward and a fourth!
A quick review of history:
1) Last season near or at the TDL 10 teams traded 11 first round picks.
Two missed the playoffs, five were bounced in the first round and the last four in the second round.
I would imagine nearly all of those teams would like to have their picks.
2) Tim Murray tried to jump start the rebuild.
There were too many errors to recount but enough to say, it did not work.
We are underestimating the impact that Clifton and Johnson will have.
Dahlin and Samuelsson together had only a handfull more hits than <strong>Clifton</strong> had last year.
When McAvoy was out at the beginning of the last season, Conner was given top pairing with Lindholm.
The most successful NHL team ever had confidence to play him as top pairing, I would imagine that must speak to his talent.
Let me add, at least 10 other teams tried to sign him and offered longer term with a higher AVV, we were most fortunate he signed with Buffalo.
I would hardly classify him as a 3rd pairing D-man.
Fifth pairing D-men do not spend over 2 min/gm on the PK.
<strong>Johnson</strong> is exactly what the Sabres need, a mentor, locker room leader and playoff experience.
Levi excelled at every level he played, he will do the same in the NHL.
With better defense, Comrie and Luukkonen will no longer appear to be AHL GK.
Finally, help is here we just need to recognize it.
Peterka, Quinn and Power will all have breakout years just as Cozens and Mittelstadt had last year.
Last year I predicted 90 points.
This year with better defense and GK while a more mature line up, they will reach 100 pts.

Run It Back
Well, well, well it appears someone is actually listening to Granato and Adams.
Johnson and Clifton were brought in to mentor and hit respectively.
Mentor Power and protect Dahlin.
Samuelsson and Jokiharju will play more as the third pairing than Bryson and Lyubushkin did last year, allowing Power and Dahlin to be fresher later in the games.
Lack of defensemen depth severly impacted the Sabres last 2 months.
Stillman, Lyubushkin and Bryson will be spares allowing other injured defensemen time to mend in the press box and not on the ice.
Quinn, Peterka and Power will have breakout years just as Cozens and Mittelstadt did this year.
Levi has excelled at every level he played, he will do the same in the NHL.
Finally, the Sabres never had depth as they do now.
Imagine a player with the talent of Krebs is our third line center.
Thompson was not healthy enough to center the top line, our third line winger centers the top line the last 11 games with a +10 and 17 points.
Last year I predicted 90 points, this year my prediction is 100.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rktkt66</b></div><div>Granato shed some light on his thinking so far when he spoke to media after development camp started - he seems to want to play Johnson with different partners, depending on the situation. He spoke of teaming him with Dahlin at times, with Samuelsson during PK situations and with Power when he sees the need to steady some of the learning curve Power is still going to have as a sophomore. It sounded like he wants to spread Johnson's on-ice experience around during game situations, not just rely in the off-ice mentorship that would naturally occur.
In that same PC, it was also surprising to hear Granato say that he wanted Johnson as much as he wanted Clifton - we all heard Clifton talk of the USNTDP connection so the familiarity Granato had with him was obvious but there was no hint that Granato was so fond of Johnson to encourage Adams to go after him.</div></div> <div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres89</b></div><div>I heard somebody (Yost or larkin?) Suggest that johnson played for a Colorado team that went through the same development process that he's trying. For certain defencemen need to play either side with any of the other five defenders who are dressed that night.
You can call me crazy but left/right pairings are important.
Let me provide one example why it is important.
Remember two years ago how easy it was for Tuch to steal the puck from Eichel,
Jack was playing his off hand and could not back hand the puck past Alex.
Look at Tampa, they have three strong LHD but they still manage to pair them with three barely NHL RHD.
Last time I checked, the Bolts won multiple cups with this concept.
You can look me up once the season starts can remind me that I am wrong, but I will be shocked if these are not the primary pairings:
Dahline-Clifton, Conner played with Lindholm at the start of the season last year when McAvoy was out, Dahlin and Samuelson together only had a handfull more hits than he did on his own.
Power-Johnson, Erik will not play 20 minutes, when he is on the ice he will be an on ice mentor for Owen
Samuelsson-Jokiharju
These pairing put a stronger defender and a stronger puck carrier on the ice together.
When a team only has two RHD of course the coach will be forced to pair two LHD.

2) The fourth has moderate value.
3) Buffalo finally has LHD and RHD balance, adding Määttä would give the Sabres 5 LHD and 3 RHD.
Let's not forget Jokiharju is their best RHD Määttä would not crack the Sabres top 3.
4) Let's compare past trades:
Määttä traded for Dominik Kahun (currently playing swisserland) and round 5 pick and Brad Morrison a former 4th round pick now enjoying life in the ACHL
Jokiharju traded for 8th OA Nylander when Alex still appeared to have a decent upside.
There is no incentive for Buffalo make this trade.

need to trim down roster
IMO you nailed the top two lines and the defensemen pairings.
Bryson will be waived and with his salary plus his poor performance last season, it is unlikely he would be claimed.
<strong>Very good job!</strong>

Trading with every team excercise
Buffalo says no with prejudice.
Please compare Hart and Luukkonen over the past three years:
Hart 0.900 SV% 44 W 58 L 4 T
Luukkonen 0.898 SV% 20 W 19 L 0 T
Why does Buffalo need Hart if over the past three years their records are very comparable?
With Quinn out for 4 to 6 months Olofsson is worth considerably more to the Sabres than a 6th round pick.

I guess we all missed this team is $886,070 over the cap this year while power and dahlin need to be paid next year.
It does not matter if the trades are fair, Buffalo would need to shed cap NEXT YEAR as these players may earn an additional bonus of $4,570,000.
I guess we will presume Dahlin and Power do not get raises!

Swayman for Levi

Levi has dominated at every level he ever played.
There is no reason to believe that he will not do the same in the NHL.
Swayman has played for one of the best defensiive teams in the NHL, it is unlikely that he will perform as well for the Sabres.

If they do nothing
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Untuxed</b></div><div>Do you mean buyers at the deadline? I think they have a reasonable shot of making the playoffs.</div></div> Sellers to make room for Kulich, Savoie, Benson, Johnson.
There were <strong>12 first round picks</strong> traded near or on the TDL.
Two teams missed the playoffs, 5 teams were bounced in the first round, 4 teams in the second round (Boston traded two first round picks therefore only 11 teams).
<strong>Vegas</strong> made modest moves and traded prospects and a couple of picks, 3rd and 7th.
<strong>Florida</strong> essentially did nothing.
If Olofsson has close to 20 goals, Mittelstadt has nearly 40 pts and Lyubushkin is playing well they would all have value to teams looking to add offense or a RHD.
I am not trading the above players because they are bad, but rather they are good and Buffalo should receive great returns.
They are traded also to bring in two or three players on their ELC so Buffalo has cap space (trading those three and replacing them with ELC will add nearly $7,000,000 of space) to sign current members of the Sabres.
Over the past 7 years Buffalo has drafted really well, they should continue to collect first round picks to continue the making of a dynasty.

off season moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Untuxed</b></div><div>None of the trades are bad but I do not know if Buffalo would do them, GMKA seems pretty happy to roll with what they have. Maybe the trade with the Flyers would happen but I would wait until the Hockey Canada investigation files its report. Would suck to get Hart just to have him get suspended.</div></div>
Definitely like the Tatar addition, but he may sign for much less, maybe half but certainly $3,000,000 should do it.
So Buffalo wants Laughton and Hart:
Please compare Hart and Luukkonen over the past three years:
Hart 0.900 SV% 44 W 58 L 4 T
Luukkonen 0.898 SV% 20 W 19 L 0 T
Over the last 198 games Laughton has 93 pts with 38 gaols, Casey Mittlestadt had 100 pt and 31 goals over his last 163 games.
IMO Buffalo would rather keep Jokiharju, Olofsson, Östlund, and the 2024 1st round pick as Laughton is not needed with Tatar and Olofsson and Hart is not an upgrade over UPL.
