Pittsburgh Penguins signed Kris Letang (6 Years / $6,100,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ColonelX</b></div><div>That's like Vlasic bad.</div></div>
Disagree. He's physically better and way much better offensively than Vlasic. I didn't like the term as well, but it's better than Vlasic's for sure. The AAV is good. Less than he deserves. So, the contract is not that bad. We can re-sign Malkin for something like 5M, 5.5M for the next 3 or 4 years and then Pens will have a good cap space to sign or re-sign other players. I can live with that.

Pittsburgh Penguins signed Kris Letang (6 Years / $6,100,000 AAV)
My first reaction to this was, “this is insane! He’s 35 years old. Do they really think he’s going to keep playing at that level until he’s 41?” But the more I think about it, the more reasons I’m coming up with why it’s not that crazy. First, let’s look at the player:
• He’s still playing at an elite level, and he’s been one of the most consistent defensemen in the league over the last 12 years when he’s healthy, which he actually has been most of the time over the last 5 seasons.
• If he had gone to free agency, he would have been the best defenseman available. Klingberg is the only one who’s close.
• Based on his recent body of work and recent contracts signed by other defensemen, he should be worth at least $9M AAV for at least the coming season.
Now, from the team’s perspective:
• As others have pointed out, their win window is based on Sidney Crosby’s contract and age, and also on how much longer Malkin (assuming he comes back) and Letang can continue their high standard of play. Cap space during that win window is much more valuable than beyond that, because that’s when they’ll want to have flexibility to add a player or two to put them over the top. If they can shift cap space from the next two or three years to beyond that – like getting a $9M player for a $6M cap hit – that’s a good thing.
• This is similar to a 3-year contract with the cost and cap hit spread out over 6 years – like those deferred payment deals that they used to give before they made them illegal – except that they actually have him locked up for 6 years, so if he turns out to be the next Zdeno Chara, that’s an unexpected bonus for the team.
This makes me think that it may have been the team that wanted the 6-year term, not the player. No matter how you slice it or spread it out, I still think it’s too much – for that term I wouldn’t have gone over $5M AAV – but it’s not total insanity.

Would any of these intellectual ants be complaining if the contract were $8.75 million x 4 years? That's $35 million.
<a href="/users/mhockey91" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@mhockey91</a> and others are absolutely right. This is a smart deal.

And that’s your opinion. But as the rules stand right now, God forbid Letang has some sort of freak injury next season and is no longer physically able to play, they would be able to LTIR the deal.
Obviously I don’t anticipate him entering LTIR anytime soon. Potentially year 4/5/6 depending on many factors. Regardless, I just don’t see a world where we plays to 41.

Seems like I'm very much in the minority but I think this is a good contract.
This AAV is a fair bit lower than Letang's initial position but get the extra term to compensate, but the thing is that term doesn't really hurt the Penguins whatsoever.
And for a guy I consider to currently be a top 15RHD in the league, this is a good AAV.
Pens are only gonna be competitive for as long as Crosby allows it. When he's no longer a top line center, then Pens can start tanking. I suspect this to happen around 2025-26.
Coincidentally, I think it's a decent bet that Letang doesn't have a shelf life longer than 2-3 years either. This is also around the time Guentzel's contract is up.
This means that whenever Letang starts to seriously decline, the Penguins are gonna have to tank anyway (and they're gonna have to tank haaaard for a good number of years to rebuild), and as such paying Letang 6.1m for an additional few years won't matter one bit.
But that lessened AAV may in the short term allow the Penguins some additional room to make maneuvers gearing up for 2 or three deeper runs in the playoffs.
I vote this a good signing.

It's good and bad.
Good - It ensures that the Penguins will have a #1/#2 defensemen for cheap for the next few years while Crosby is still elite.
Bad - After Crosby is gone, Letang will still be there and won't be very good anymore.

These comments are exactly why I don’t use this site anymore besides the GM game. But I needed a good laugh and I definitely came to the right place.
This contract is absolutely brilliant. Do you really think for a second that Kris Letang given his injury history will play out the entirety of the contract? Absolutely not. He will be sent on LTIR like the Weber / hosss deals towards the end. The contract kept the AAV ridiculously low for the initial years of the deal, and in the “ugly” years of the contract, he will be on LTIR.

The way I see it, the Pens only want to be competitive for 3 more years (until Crosby’s contract is up and he’s 37). So as long as this contract is good value for like 2 years (debatable, but probably), they’re fine with it. What do they care if they need to buyout or LTIR for the last 3 years - they’ll be trying to win the draft lottery by then anyway.

How is term the most important? They have 3 more years of Sid and then it's a rough looking rebuild. Term is irrelevant. Getting Letang at 6mil is a huge W.

If he was willing to sign this contract with Carolina, they should have kept him. I thought he would want more money and/or term. With the numbers he put up last season, he probably could have got a lot more in arbitration. I thought Carolina was afraid of that and that’s why they got rid of him.
Whether he’s going to be a good fit in Philadelphia is a valid question, but he was a good fit in Carolina and probably would have been a bargain at $5M for the next two years. It’s going to be costly to replace him.
