<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>So you traded a 40 point winger and a 50 point center, for a 30 point winger who hasn't actually even scored 30 points since 2018, and a "50 point center" who had 28 points in 55 games last year, both of whom are wayyyyy worse defensively, and you somehow got better?
Even if you had gotten better (which you haven't), that's still nowhere near good enough. 30 and 50 points are seriously enough to satisfy you? What a risky bet you're taking on thinking they get to that amount of points. At least you'll win the bet if that happens, because it won't be enough to actually win much else.</div></div>
Cool. Well, you have proven your point that the Avs suck and we won't contend. Hope that satisfies you.
We've still got a cup win in the past two years (I've said that in at least 4 responses now because it really does affect a fan's perspective) and a track record of reviving careers. It's how we won that cup in the first place.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>Couldn't take the 2C role by the time he was 21, what a bum. Ross Colton is 27 and had similar production to Newhook at 21. Newhook makes 2.9 for the next 4 years, and Colton makes $4 mil for the next 4 years. So you traded Newhook because he couldn't play 2C, replaced him with a more expensive 3C who is less likely to ever grow into the 2C role, and brought on 2 years of 31 year old RJO to play those top 6 minutes, despite him not even being capable of 2C minutes on a non-playoff team and being a cap dump as a result.
Makes sense for sure.</div></div>
Why.....why are you so angry about the Avs, man? We're good, I promise.
And again, I'll say for the third time that if you actually watched Newhook play every game you would have a different opinion. Mackinnon's second season wasn't much better than Newhook's last year but we didn't give up on him because he was leading a team that had guys like Max Talbot and an aging Iginla playing his wing. Newhook couldn't hold onto a center role at all, regardless of what line he was on and consistently had awful turnovers and missed assignments. Could we have been more patient? Sure, which is what we would've done if we weren't in a cup window. But our FO decided that we didn't have time to be patient with him and traded him for a known commodity in Colton that this team needs and a first round draft pick. It makes perfect sense to me.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>Well, yes - both individually, but also because you're playing them in your top 6 as a result of your cap management decisions elsewhere. You grasping this? <strong>You have a limited amount of cap space to spread among your roster, that's what's referred to as cap management</strong>.</div></div>
And I am more than comfortable with us taking a risk with RyJo and Drouin because we now have a 3rd line that has reliable players and still have a d-corps that is out of this world. Last year our top 6 through most of the season was:
Lehky-Mac-Rantanen
Rodrigues-Compher-Nichuskin
This year's top 6 is better than that one even if Drouin is only a 30 point player and RyJo is only a 40-50 point player. And I will bet good money that both those guys will surpass those numbers given our track record with reviving careers.

You don't have to take those risks, that's just how you're choosing to allocate your cap.</div></div>
Cool, looking forward to criticizing them if and when the time comes.
Yes, Newhook was 21 years old but he had two full seasons under his belt and had been given multiple opportunities to take that 2C role and simply couldn't. It wasn't the stats either, it was that he simply didn't know where to be on the ice. I can get over pucks not going in the net or a guy just needing to add some size as he grows to be an effective player. Newhook was not keeping up with the hockey IQ part of the game and that's why he kept being relegated to bottom 6 minutes. Also, we turned him into Ross Colton and a first round draft pick so I view that as great asset management by our front office.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>I'm not here to defend the Leafs, but I will say their offseason moves have been much better than the Avs, leaving them in a much better position to contend. You know what happened to all those guys you listed in last year's playoffs? They all got knocked out rd 1 because the teams they played on bled a considerable amount of talent and didn't do enough to replace them.
Also, where do people get this idea that Marner doesn't score in the playoffs? Shouldn't you just be able to go and look? lol
You're one tweaked groin away from having Francouz start as well, Woll is a better goalie. You're also one tweaked groin away from having center depth of RJo - Colton - Myers? - Cogliano?
You're zero tweaked groins away from having LW depth of Lehkonnen, Drouin, Tatar... Basically montreal's 3rd line a couple years ago.</div></div>
We got knocked out the first round by a goalie standing on his head and a Seattle team that was on a roll. That's hockey. The guys he listed won a cup the year before, and don't tell me it was all because of Kadri and Burakovsky. We haven't replaced those guys full yet, but that's how you build a cup team. When Kadri and Burakovsky came to the avs they were seen as projects. Our coaching staff knows how to take projects like that and turn them into very good players.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>Which younger player would that be? This entire comment is wishful thinking to say the least.</div></div>
Kovalenko looks primed to take a spot in the top 6 somewhere, although he is a winger. We need to see how Callum Ritchie develops this next year, but he could be a candidate in 2025-2026. Jason Polin out of WMU has shown some good traits early on as well. The reality is that we will go with RyJo for this year and likely next as well and we're paying a fine price for that player. After that we'll need someone to step up.
Also you seem pretty fired up in the two threads about this team. If you want to know why us Avs fans aren't, it's because we've already had a cup win in the past two years and we feel grateful for that. Even if we can't get back there soon, I'm just happy to watch this core and this team for the next 5-7 years. Management has been incredible and personally I'm going to keep being happy watching this team compete.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>Did you not read any of what I said previously? I literally explained this all already. I understand why players walk to free agency, the point is you haven't done nearly enough to replace them. Have you actually looked at the recent production of RJo, Drouin and Tatar? Signing those players is not even close to a viable approach.
Not to mention, the elite D core you had on your run has only gotten better with the progression of Byram and the growth of Makar. A top 4 of Toews - Makar + Byram - Manson is still top 5 in the league, what need is there for a $5 mil cap hit on your 3rd pair when your forward core is that weak? You could have used the cap you're spending on Johansen and Girard to sign Kadri and still have $2 mil for a 3rd pair D, spending more than $2 mil on a 3rd pair D is just poor cap allocation anyway, not to mention the return you might get for Girard.
You also trade Newhook who is 22 and was your best bet for filling that 2C role in the future, and replace him with a 3rd line winger in Colton, paying him $4 mil for years to play 3C, despite him having similar production to Newhook now and being 5 years older?
Your forward core is the island of misfit toys right now. Johansen was a literal cap dump, from a non-playoff team no less. Drouin couldn't even hold down a top 9 role on a basement team in the Habs, nobody wanted to sign Tatar which is why he was picked up this late in the offseason, Wood and Colton are the cast-offs of contenders in the east.
To put it plainly, with the talent you have at certain spots in your roster you should be a contender, with now being your window of contention. This team is not even close to being cup-worthy and any suggestion otherwise is just laughable.</div></div>
If you watched Newhook play last year you would not be making those comments. He was lost on the ice both offensively and defensively and was not going to be the answer at 2C.
Drouin and RyJo are risks, but those are the risks you have to take to comply with the cap. This team has chosen to dedicate a good amount of money to defense and some key offensive players and needed to find cost-effective ways to supplement that. Now it's up to a very capable coaching staff to get the most out of them. There's no other FA's that were on the market this year that would've made sense for us in terms of talent and cap.
Finally, we waited out Tatar in the same way we waited out Evan Rodrigues last year. Tatar was looking for term and the way the market played out he wasn't going to get it. It's not like he's been an awful player the past two seasons by any stretch. So I think it's disingenuous to say no one wanted him.

You're right, I did miss Tatar who scored 20 on the nose. There's nothing even remotely impressive about anything you said though, and comparing their scoring to that of the Stars last year is interesting to say the least.
Yes, they have an elite D core. That's exactly why they shouldn't be satisfied with a forward group that awful....</div></div>
Dude it's the cap era. Something's gotta give. And that awful forward core still helped us to a 109 point season last year. I'll take that every single year and be very happy about it. The team was riddled with injuries and tired from a short summer. I'm fine with them taking a few risks in the top 6, especially because the defense provides so much offense as well.

Girard is still likely going to get moved as it looks like we have a better chance at getting Toews to take a discount than a lot of us first thought. I would say that when we do move Girard it will likely be for futures and not much else. We need to preserve cap as much as possible. Which is why we are taking the risks of Drouin and RyJo. Our system (and our coach ) has been able to help guys find their way again more often than not, and even if we can only get .5 ppg out of both of those guys that should be enough to keep us competitive. If they are able to go above that .5 ppg pace (which I think one of them will), we could be looking at another cup opportunity. If one of them completely fails, we have Tatar who can jump into the top 6 and even Colton could bump up to 2C and still give us Compher-like numbers. Hertl is an awesome player, but I think our overall goal as a team has to be that a younger player will step up into that 2C role in the next few years so we can keep our core together through their early thirties.

At this point, both Backlund and Vladar are luxury pieces for the Avs that we really don't need going into the season. Vladar is simply too expensive as a backup unless Frankie is out long-term, and like it or not we are rolling with RyJo at 2C. I could see Bryson working out at that price, though.

Today, Nylander is much better than Byram, nobody is disputing that. Wingers are less valuable than defensemen, but Nylander is very good!
But the Avs already pay premium contracts to MacKinnon, Makar, Rantanen, and likely are looking to re-sign Toews. Giving up a cost controlled 22 year old RFA who plays top 4 minutes and hasn’t hit his ceiling is dumb. That’s exactly the value contract that you need to contend when you have a top heavy team.
This trade in particular is bad because you also have the Avs giving up a cost effective top 6 player in Lehkonen. Not to mention the additional 1st (and Jack Johnson… for some reason?) Try to make a cap compliant 2024 roster for the Avs after this trade. It’ll be significantly worse than if they just kept their own players.</div></div>
