Not Giving Kreider his number

I wouldn't claim off waivers personally but we'd still accept a 2021 2nd straight up.

Washington Capitals signed Pheonix Copley (3 Years / $1,100,000 AAV)

Samsonov is still the goalie of the future in WAS in the same way Hart was in PHI at the start of this season. Signing Copley to this deal does 2 things. First off he is an affordable backup in the near future and has a cap hit low enough to be sent down without cap implications. Secondly when the expansion draft comes along he will meet the exposure requirements. Holtby's future contract will be decided when that time comes and as WAS has proven over the years they are not afraid to move goaltenders (Varlamov, Grubaer).</div></div>
Thank you hockeyfan for putting it so well. Everyone in this thread should read your comment. This contract is about locking up a competent backup and ensuring expansion draft requirements will be met. Nothing - AT ALL - to do with Samsonov.

It's an interesting call to make, but it makes sense. Copley's been good for us, so if Samsonov isn't quite ready to step in, he can stay as the backup. I'm more intrigued as to what this means for Holtby. His contract expires after next season and there's no sense in signing him to a long term extension since Samsonov is the future. No room for Ilya to move up in the organization at that point.

You nailed it. Contrary to what some others are saying, this actually supports the idea that the Caps are going with Samsonov long-term as they’re ensuring they have a different goalie that satisfies the exposure requirements.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>toque</b></div><div>Lots of backups signing 3 year deals this year. From a Jets perspective this contract signals the absolute minimum AAV that Winnipeg can bring Brossoit back for.</div></div>
I'm guessing the three year deals are due to the Seattle expansion draft. The third year allows them to be exposed.

Devils Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jfstompers</b></div><div>I think it's a tough one. Wood has a no quit motor but is his ceiling higher than bura, Probably not. Bura has those hands that make you think he has more if he puts it together. Hold back the draft pick but roll the dice on bura. What if.....</div></div>
Tough to figure out Wood, defensively. The Devils use him in the fourth toughest zone starts on the team at evens, but he's 21st on the team in ATOI, and last in PK time. But he scores some goals sometimes and he's signed cheap for a few years. If there's nothing else out there, then for all the cap reasons Smitty just gave, then yeah, I think it's possible the Caps give up a guy with twice as many career points. Wood's put up a career 1.67 points/60, and Burakovsky's got a career average of 2.05, so yeah, you pay more, but you get what you pay for, most of the time. If New Jersey has cap space for more offense, and Washington doesn't... then I think a 3rd is super cheap.
I'd rather see the Caps offer Burakovsky and a 2nd for Blake Coleman, though.
