<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ATC</b></div><div>Every team that didnt make it far says that. reality is drafting can only take you so far. Its slug fest arms race at the top and fortune favours the bold, which the Sabres most certainly are not.

Just another case study on what not to do as a GM&gt;</div></div>

Don't say that too loud around Buffalo fans, you be inundated with "tim murray" blah blah blah. I'm in the minority, I kinda liked Murray's approach. Cup winners have difference makers, go find those guys, without them you are nothing, or even worse- consistently average. Adams has single handedly accumulated a ton of assets, especially at forward. The Sabres currently have two recent first overall picks on defense, supporting dahlin with a defensive guy like Samuelsson really takes dahlins game to the next level. The hope here is that powers game will similarly be elevated by Clifton. Its conservative, sure, but it's worth seeing where it goes. Our bottom pair is some combination of stillman, jokiharju, Erik Johnson, and possibly Ryan johnson- none of those are particularly impressive. The Sabres showed the ability to score last year, Thompson and cozens looked fantastic as #1 and #2 centers, and there's plenty of wingers that finish (maybe not the high end first line winger, but there's quantity of quality). Adding a legitimate 3c would help, it's possible that Krebs is that guy, but it's still a work in progress. There's other center options that also might work as a 3c in the future- guys like ostlund, savoie, and Wahlberg- depending on how you would like to build your team. The fourth line is a place the Sabres could upgrade- they don't lean too hard on teams, they don't add much offense, and the Sabres pk could benefit from adding a depth guy on the fourth line. And of course goalie, Levi looks like the real deal, but upl and comrie should have been upgraded. I'm not suggesting paying whatever the asking price was for hellebuyck, Gibson, or hart, but bring in at least one vet goalie. So, as objectively as possible, that's my assessment of the sabres. The main pieces are here- stud d (hopefully that becomes more apparent with defensive minded partners), and two fantastic centers. It doesn't have to be right now, but the gm and front office are going to have to decide which depth pieces are good enough and which need to be upgraded to take the next step.
