Kaliyev is the kind of player who needs to be scoring goals in order to have a regular slot in the lineup.
His element is offense.
Barely adequate skater for the pace of the NHL.
His off the puck detail can be frustrating. There are times he exits the offensive zone too late to catch up on the back check and assist defensively.
Has been in and out of the Kings lineup.

Ice time in most recent five game segment ranged from 9:00 - 14:00 - deployed at ES and PP

Kaliyev has a great release, and the puck touch to make plays in tight areas around the crease.
Unfortunately, when he's not producing offense his value to the group falls off dramatically.

Kaliyev is polarizing.
He doesn't play the game quick or fast. He's an average skater at best.
His three zone detail ranges wildly. He definitely cannot be utilized in key defensive scenarios.
His element is goal scoring. Kaliyev has great mitts and a fantastic release. He can coral pucks in tight spaces and deposit pucks in the back of the net.
Unfortunately his compete in the hard areas also ranges.
He's been - in and out - of the dog house in LA.
Through 40GP he averaged 13:00 TOI - deployed at even strength and the power-play.
Over his most recent twenty game segment he only produced 2 assists.
Pending RFA. Cap hit is $894K.
It's possible he could upgrade an team's power-play. A change of scenery might motivate him more.
Fourth line forward at even strength who finds a role on the PP.

A player like Kaliyev is very likely going to be a very streaky player his entire career.
He's an elite shooter who can be very dangerous on the power-play.
His skating is barely adequate for the NHL game. He lacks consistent 200ft pace and generally picks his spots to play quick.
At the All-Star break it's safe to say the Kings were hoping for more out of the forward

Kaliyev doesn't PK - and likely never will at the NHL level.
Despite his stature he was only credited with 17 hits and 9 shot blocks in the the 38 GP -
Pure offense. When not scoring he struggles to contribute to team success in other areas of the game. Third line forward at even strength but a first unit power-play candidate.

If there is a role for a 'specialist' in the NHL, Kaliyev might fit the description.

Kaliyev has an elite release. He catches pucks and directs them on goal accurately and efficiently.
Not a burner in open ice. Not a transition threat. His defensive detail ranges as well.
Element is offense. Has 2F upside but his overall game holds him back from more of a role over the course of a full 60 minutes.
