Description
When Demers was a free agent last summer, I thought it was a no-brainer that the Leafs should try to sign him. After he signed for $4.5 for 5 years, I thought maybe the Leafs were weary to give an older Dman that money and term. Then after Arizona traded McGinn for him (and got Florida to retain salary) I thought again the Leafs missed out.

Demers is a Right shot, Defensively sound Veteran...Exactly what the Leafs need. Surely the Leafs could have put a better package together than McGinn (with all of our surplus on the wing)

Babcock has made it clear he want another D who can play on the PK (seeing as only Hainsey, Zaitsev and Rielly play on the PK)

With regards to 5v5, you could play him with Gardiner (as a safety net) or drop to the 3rd pairing with Borgman (would be a great partner to learn with)

I know, I know, hindsight is 20/20... but even at the time I thought this could have been the man to go after....What are your thoughts?

I guess Florida would prefer to have him on Western Conference team than a Atlantic playoff competitor. Apparently Demers has not being playing well in Arizona (subject to further checking). Do the Leafs really want him playing to the to age of almost 35 as a Leaf? I just don't think the Leafs would have offered him a five year contract. Right or wrong the Leafs went with one veteran Hainsey, and two youngish maybees...Borgman and Rosen during the offseason. Leafs probably went shorter term route in Hainsey, hoping Dermot, Nielsen, Borgman, Rosen, Liligren (at least some of them) will be ready within two years.

I suppose your right with the long term uncertainty... but you cannot say he is having a bad year. He has 8 points in 19 games, on the worst team in hockey. he has a +1 rating, and good GF% and CF% if your into advanced stats... Now he is playing with OEL, but I think playing on a better team, with a worse partner would cancel each other out.

And about trading to a division rival...maybe your right... I don't like that logic, but thats just my oppinion

Jim thanks for update on Demers stats. I'm with you, I'm not really believer voiding trading to a rival. If it helps your team that all that matters. If memory serves me correctly, Demers had a NMC and had to approve a trade to Arizona. So maybe the Leafs never had a chance any way. He only wanted a guaranteed long term deal, and maybe you wanted to stay in the US. One thing about Arizona which Shane Doan liked, he didn't wear out your body when he never or rarely played hockey past April 10.
