not commenting on the trade but i think if calgary wants to win they got to go all in NOW. Giordano and Smith aren't getting any younger and they have traded away so many high end draft picks so its pretty much do or die.

I don't think Calgary has to do much at all, as they've set themselves up extremely well for now and for the foreseeable future. They've got arguably one of the top-3 2-pairing defensive groups in the NHL and maybe the deepest blueline, signed for the next three years, all of whom, with the exception of Giordano are between 24 and 27. They have 4 very promising defensive prospects that they can allow to fully mature in Valimaki, Fox, Andersson and Kylington. They have some very good young forwards with a mix of good veteran players. The core going forward of Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett and Tkachuk has an average age of 21.5, and the veterans they have in Backlund and Frolik are still under 30. They have a number of young forwards that could make the jump in the next couple of years in Poirier, Klimchuk, Shinkaruk, Mangiapane, Dube, Phillips, Jankowski, among others. Finally their biggest current weakness, may be one of their system's biggest strengths, with 2 promising goaltending prospects on the cusp in Gillies and Rittich, and another who may be better than both of them in Parsons. Yes Treliving has mortgaged the next two drafts to get here, but with their organizational depth at D and in net, and their young forward core, they can certainly afford it. As for the Pastrnak trade, I think it's a good deal, which means Boston fans will think it's not enough, so probably not gonna happen.
