That trade is silly. But I’ll continue to beat the drum that anyone proposing positive value to NY with 2.5 mil retained is off base. He is still a cap dump at that value. Holl and a 2nd with 2.5 mil retained is the trade. Without Holl, it’s a 2nd coming back from NY.

But even that doesn't make any sense for the Rangers.

Holl 3.4 mil plus 2.5 mil retained equals 5.9 mil.

That's a savings of 2.1 mil.

The whole point for trading Trouba is to sign players in UFA to fill out the roster and to re-sign their own UFA's and RFA's down the road.

Red Wings won't get both a cap dump and retention.

NY has the option to use the 2nd to flip Holl elsewhere or give Detroit the 2nd to move him to a 3rd party. There is not value in Detroit taking Trouba at 5.5 when they can sign better players in free agency for a similar AAV. Trouba at 5.5 is a negative asset. It may not be a trade NY likes, it probably won’t be when trading a player on a 8 mil deal that’s worth 4.
