As much as everyone is putting Marner down because he is not willing to give the Leafs a hometown discount.....(which would be a crock if his deal was signed before Nylander). Pretty much every Canadian kids dream is to play for the Stanley Cup. Obviously, it hasn't happened in Toronto, but there always seems to be hope at the start of each season. Not even just the start, but even going into the playoffs, there are always folks thinking that this will be the year. Now......compare that to being in San Jose! Other than Cellibrini being there, there is nothing to be excited about. Going there voluntarily and signing a long term deal for $12M+ would show that all he is after is the paycheque. He would be more than halfway through that contract before they even sniff the playoffs.
Marner is under no obligation to do the Leafs any favours. He knows that if he can ride this season out (and still have that hope for a Cup run) then he can decide where he wants to sign.
For him to go to a contender, a team that is truly trying to make a run at it (even without signing an extension), that team is not going to want to give up any key assets. At best, to make room for his salary, they will want to move out a player that is under performing on their salary. If the Leafs are lucky, it might be someone at the end of their deal too or maybe only one more year left. Otherwise, it is eating some salary over a few years and getting an extra draft pick or two.
