8M only. It's a 1 year deal. He gets nearly double on a 5 year deal at 3M

So he can sign another deal next season. Why would he take such a low cap hit and long duration?

Daily faceoff has stammer projected at 3 years for 6.125. He would be a good fit in Boston yes but hes also slow so he'd have to be on a line with some faster guys to balance that out. In my opinion stiking him with debrusk is the right move however id probably have poitras play center for that line and move zacha down to the third line wing an move coyle up to the first line.

He wouldn't but you are missing my point entirely. Stamkos is 34, it is absolutely in his own best interest to sign a long term contract this summer as every succeeding year that potential term and cap hit will continue to decrease. If you offered Stammer a 1 year deal this year at 8M would you offer him the same contract next summer? Or the summer after that? No almost certainly not. More than likely he would rather take a 5.5-6M deal that is 5 years long because that would net him 27.5 - 30M until he's 40, vs if he just signed 1 year deals he would get 8, 5, 2+2 (P. Bonus), 2+2 (P. Bonus), 2+2 (P. Bonus). That would net him ~25M until he's 40

is there anything to say he can't sign a deal after this? is it in the contract that he has to retire or something? for example. 1x8 followed by a 4x3 is a lot more than a 5x3.

ask yourself this - if the long term deal he wants, lets say 3x7.5 isn't out there, is he better off signing for 1x8, and then enabling teams to give him performance bonuses, or signing a 3x5.5 if that's the best out there?
