You didn’t read anything did you? Debrusk was a sign and trade. Ullmark was going to a 3rd team that would send a 2nd/ good prospect to Winnipeg. Merkulov is far from useless. He would be a middle 6 guy in a year or 2
I pointed out that stuff, except for the DeBrusk thing because it's unrealistic. DeBrusk hasn't signed yet, so if he does sign it's going to be where he wants and his contract will include trade protection, which will include a "no" for Winnipeg.
Or, you could say if DeBrusk is so excited to sign a contract that will have him playing in Winnipeg for 7 years. Why wouldn't the Jets just save the assets and sign him July 1st?
The main piece of the deal is completely unrealistic.
As I said the "2nd and a prospect" is far too vague to consider. We'd need to know what 2nd and what prospect to evaluate.
Merkulov being a long shot to be a middle six guy in a year or two has no value to a team trying to win now. Not to mention, all teams have a half dozen long shots like Merkulov that, playing the percentages, will never amount to anything in the NHL.
So that's why I'm saying if you look at the trade logically and realistically, it's nothing that Winnipeg would even look at.
