Although I like Cane and appreciate what he would bring to the team you have couple major issues....

1st... Teams don't resign RFA in the summer and then trade them before camp... let alone twice... this can be easily fixed by shipping a different d prospect and Bennett's RFA rights...

2nd... Not so easy to fix... Cap space remaining 1.459957 but you are short 3 roster players? At the NHL minimum you would need 1.95 but more realistically 5 - includes some wiggle room for bonus's...

Best Fix for both issues is a trade in January... Bennett is showing some signs of improvement but looses the 3rd line center job to Jankowski while Kulak is stuck as the 7th d-man. With both under preforming Calgary may have to add in a G prospect like McDonald. Or Ferland could be part of a deal as he has obviously lost his top line RW position and dropping Versteeg to the 4th line (or Ferland) would be poor use of a proven asset.

This trade definitely would happen mid season, I dont think an RFA sign in trade is ever a good thing! But youve pretty much described the situation I was thinking of, just didnt type it out (Ive gotta start typing more in the description haha). Versteeg is a movable piece who can play every where. I am thinking if Lazar and Ferland both play well, Versteeg is stuck on that 4th line. More important to develop those third line players than have Versteeg on a one year contract take playing time away. But like I said Versteeg can be plugged in anywhere.
