Aside from Fowler what other LHD do they ducks have that can play 1st pair minutes? They will get eaten alive by other teams top lines. And if Nurse doesnt work out you could flip him in a few years with retained salary for some picks and prospects.
Probably none right now, but Olen Zellweger and Pavel Mintyukov both have left hand shots and both have superstar potential. Besides, the Ducks aren't going to contend anytime in the next few years, they won't necessarily need someone who can be a perfect first pairing guy immediately. If this deal was made, Nurse might just end up being an expensive third pairing guy; certainly within a couple of years anyway.
If you're doing this trade from the Oilers' perspective, probably nah, but if you were looking at something for the Ducks, what about a package involving a right shot defenceman? Would the Hurricanes dare part with a package including Scott Morrow to get a 32 year old Fowler? Maybe the Rangers would be willing to part with Braden Schneider if they could add Fowler to their corp for a few years of Cup contention. Leftie K'Andre Miller apparently hasn't been that great for the Rangers lately. If there was ever going to be a trade between the Ducks and the Kings (who are looking for a left D upgrade), maybe something involving either Jordan Spence or Brandt Clarke could get done (theoretically, Clarke has higher upside and, of the two, would have the best shot at becoming a first pairing guy?). Am I even correct that the Ducks would prefer a younger RHD over a guy in his late 20s? Either way:
Zellweger - Gudas
Mintyukov - Schneider
Vaakanainen - Lindstrom
LaCombe
doesn't look bad to me. Someone who's watched him as a Ducks fan said Vaakanainen formed a good shut down pair with Gudas. In this case, Gudas moves up to be Zellweger's security blanket, while Lindstrom was actually plus 12 in 32 games for Anaheim down the stretch. He, LaCombe and Vaakanainen can fight for the bottom pair spots.
