I think it terrible assets management for the Leafs. Have you looked at JTs declining numbers. And what is this fantasy about Rodibas Island (aka Fantasy Island). Leafs would still be on the hook for about 5.3m cap hit because Marleau is 35 plus signing..
If anyone would really want JT why not just till he's UFA, and then you don't have Nylander or the picks and you could get a return for Kadri, instead of trading all those assets for a UFA.

i don't think the Leafs would want to trade Kadri, Gardner and picks for Tavares. Too high a price for JT.

Maybe they just sign Tavares as a UFA and give up no assets for say $7 million one year deal to win a cup for 2018-2019 season while Matthews and Marner are still on entry level deals. He will probably make a another $3 million in endorsements playing in TO so he ends up making say $11 million and then he can sign his long-term deal with any team.

If Tavares comes back to Canada it will only be to TO to win a cup with Babcock.

why anyone think the tavares is the missing piece to lead to the cup is such nonsense. check out his record in new york, it takes more than one player. kadri had five less points than tavares last season and you want to include gardiner in the trade. isles would make the playoffs and the leafs would be out of the playoffs.
