As much as I would love this for the Leafs, Kings would need an impact D coming back instead of a prospect like Dermott

I'm not sure the Leafs can afford Doughty this year cap wise or even next season. There will be some screaming from CapFriendly folks that Nylander or Marner and more will have to given up to get Doughty. Really? No guarantees that having a "stud" dman, really gets you any further....How did Hedman and Doughty's teams do last year?
Kings are in a dilemma. They are average at best and not a great system that will be sending players in the NHL immediately. Big cap hits Gaborik, Brown and Koptitar are untradeable. Doughty is one of few players that could help in the Kings rebuild. Don't know if the Leafs though is really a good trade partner , maybe another contender or wanna be contender.
Just for once....just once would like to Doughty (and Tanev and OE Larsson) traded to another team besides the Leafs. Seems impossible

really hot take coming in: most fanbases are realistic enough to know to know that you can't trade for a teams best player by throwing together mediocre pieces. (NYR are also often guilty of this, maybe it's a thing amongst bigger fanbases)
although that impression probably wasn't too far fetched after seeing the return on the Kessel trade...

Barathrum_Obama. Good to know now that you're not President, you can spend quality time on CapFriendlysmile
Regarding the Kessel trade. The trade was really a 8m cap dump by the Leafs. (6.8 with retention). Kessel's really poor play for long stretches of time with the Leafs meant he had to traded. For the Pens and Phil's he found a good environment or recognition on what it needed to good, even very good NHLer. What Phil has accomplished with the Pens, really means nothing of what he would have done for the Leafs if he had been a Leaf for the past two seasons.
Yea, I admit Doughty would be great addition to a team virtually any team of two years. But how to fit into a contender salary cap? Or if the Kings demand immediate help (like a Nylander, Ehlers, Aho and more in a trade, well it the benefit really that much if key pieces are subtracted from a team just to make one addition? Even the very strong Capitals team added Shattenkirk at TDL, without the lose of any current players on their team and it didn't help them last season.

Doughty basically already said he would go to the Leafs after his contract is up with the Kings, wouldnt be smart to trade for him and waste assets
