Giving UFAs extra term to sign in SJ

Description
Sharks are likely to pick between 2-4 with current lottery odds, but this plan becomes more relevant if they draft Celebrini.

Both Sprong and Carrier (1) fill positions of need (2) are young enough to still be part of the rebuilding timeline (3) aren't good enough to reverse the tank (4) can be traded if the rebuild is slow.

Sharks offer longer term compared to other teams to convince them to come to San Jose. I filled out the rest of the roster with younger guys, but Bordeleau and Gushchin are not locks for the NHL team. Will Smith stays in college.

Kind of a terrible idea, next year should fill any remaining spots by taking on cap dumps plus sweeteners from other teams, 25-26 should be start of youth movement

Pretty sure Grier has already stated he is looking to efficiently spend money in the UFA period, and he said if I recall as a quote that he doesn't want to sign bad money deals or long term as he wants to avoid the situation San Jose as just recently in. Its far more reasonable to wait and see what San Jose does this TDL then assess what the summer will look like.

Uh no, this is the year of the cap dumps (who still have some value). They took on Hoffman, Rutta, Granlund, and Duclair.

Next year / after this years trade deadline is when the youth movement should be in full force. They have a lot of guys who'd already be up if it weren't for taking on cap dumps. Bordeleau, Shakir, and Gushchin are NHL ready.

All 3 needed this year int he AHL, but they need to be fighting for spots next year of the “BUST” tag will start to be rumored.

I agree they needed it in terms of ice-time. But they've all shown they can play at the NHL level and would be up here if there weren't so many veteran roster players. With the Cuda having like a 1% chance at making playoffs, they should be letting them go up after the deadline when some of those guys are moved

Sharks have to prioritize getting their AHL team stronger and playoff worthy, then use that to start supplementing the NHL team! Sharks are still years from being competitive sadly.

Next year should absolutely be a year of taking cap dumps and there will be multiple teams likely willing to shed some salary and sweeteners. (See the Coyotes draft pick collection compared to ours)

Why not call Winnipeg on Schmidt and Iafallo, both on bigger $ AAV and last year of deal. You could get a 2nd or 3rd to take the contract and then turn and deal them for another pick at the deadline. And you keep your cap liabilities low as more and more young guys start to be ready for NHL.

It seems unlikely that Smith, bystedt, musty and the sharks 1st rounder this summer will be ready next season, but in 25-26 they might all be? Then these contracts become a burden.

Sharks already have to figure out how to move out some defenseman, and Vlasics play as of late might discourage a buyout this summer.

Yeah probably another year before the young guys are impactful but I expect some of them will stick like Eklund this year. Grier has shown he'll give term for guys. We have plenty of bottom of the lineup guys both signed or in the AHL. this team needs a top 6 winger badly. i rather fill in the bottom next year with young guys and spend like 2x6M on a guy who can get 25 goals

It's worth noting that it's less about the amount of time and more about when the deals end. Benning got 4 years last year and Burroughs got 3 years this year. None of the contracts GMMG has signed go beyond the 25-26 season. That's also the final year of the Vlasic contract (barring a potential buyout giving a reduced amount but extending the timeline). It seems like he's trying to have the cap table as empty as possible when it's time for the team to start to look at making the playoffs. Note that I'm not suggesting they'll be contenders in 26-27, more of a Detroit/Buffalo/Ottawa position where there's reason to believe they could compete for the playoffs. I see him making similar offers this year, potentially limiting them to 2 years unless they're someone he thinks might actually be part of the next good Sharks team (and obviously ELCs aren't included in that).
