$1.1M 2024-25
$2.3M 2025-26
$2.6M 2026-27
$1.5M/yr from 2027-2030

Even in this scenario EDM isn't paying enough to move Campbell and have us retain on smith.

That means for the 2024-25 season the pens would be almost $5.6M in deadcap between Campbell, Petry, Johnson, Smith.

Hard pass, terrible for the penguins.

Plus Holland said they're not moving Broberg I believe. Could've been for a rental they weren't.

The Penguins need to create cap space, avoid taking on bad contracts, and avoid buyouts.

The NHL's salary cap is increasing by $4.2 million to $87.7 million for the 2024-2025 season. The increased cap space could be used to extend Guentzel and address depth priorities. (Guentzel should be seeking $8 million AAV on his next contract.)

Campbell has a bad contract. The Oilers should find a trade partner with greater cap space to take on Campbell's contract. Anaheim, Arizona, Buffalo, and Chicago are starters.

Yeah, he said they wouldn't move him for a rental, but Smith isn't a rental and obviously getting to move Campbell would be an added incentive.

I understand your points about cap space and I'm not necessarily advocating for this trade. It mostly a thought experiment and an attempt to see how the Penguins might get younger assets quickly.

For the sake of conversation, what would need to change for you to feel like a trade around this premise works for the Penguins? Would it be not retaining anything on Smith? More picks/prospects?

This trade imo just straight up shouldn't exist.

The team isn't going full rebuild until the core retire, simple as that. Fans need to stop thinking it will be any other way.

With that, there isn't need to acquire young prospects unless they're turning around and flipping them for NHL players.

Their goal in the summer will be to retool, not hurt their cap space and add prospects.
