Quoting: fil97
as if EDM never overpays for anyone lol. and btw this isn't a crazy trade, it is an overpayment definitely but there are also other things to consider:
- EDM is considered to be a contending team that can't waste any more of 97s time and the first will be used to acquire somebody.
- biggest position of need is goaltending.
- EDM cap space is non existent.
- there aren't many other goalies that are playing as well as Ned with a 750k cap hit.
- and imo you got acciari's value wrong... he isn't a point machine obviously but defensively and for playoff hockey he is very underrated. he has value definitely. I'd say a 3rd.
- so I believe fair prices are a 2nd for ned and a 3rd for acciari... so not very far from the trade proposal
considering also Dubas being a better gm is going to make it a first lol
I'll address your points in order:
1.) Sure, there's a press to maximise the McDrai era, but that doesn't mean they're going to throw a 1st at just anybody. They spent a 1st on Ekholm but haven't traded a 1st otherwise. No reason to think there bar suddenly dropped from a high-end veteran Dman with term to an overpaid 4th liner with term + a fringe goalie UFA that's having a good year.
2.) Care to elaborate on a.) why EDM's biggest position of need is goaltending and b.) do so while also articulating how Ned fills that need? Both Skinner and Pickard have been good to great since the coaching/systems change and, the only 'need' in this area is if they decide they'd like an established, consistent veteran who they can lean on in the event of an injury to Skinner.
3.) Yes, now connect that dot to your inclusion of Noel Acciari's 2mil cap hit.
4.) Sure, but are the other options more affordable relative to what they'd be tasked with doing (backing up Skinner)? I'd say yes. For example, I'd rather pay a 4th or 5th for Reimer than a 2nd for Ned.
5.) This doesn't change the fact that his performance this year isn't worth 2mil. Factor in that he has 2 more years at that rate, he's 32 years old, he has no consistent history of offensive production, and see point #3 and you'll grasp that, even if there exists a hypothetical team out there that might pay a 3rd for him, that team isn't EDM.
6.) And I've laid out my reasons to the contrary. I see Ned as worth around a 3rd and Acciari costing around a 3rd to dump.
