Obviously! But tbh that’s a fire ass lineup but no chance you resign Draisaitl if you did this

The wiser option here is finding a way to dump Nurse and Campbell and bring in a good backup and 2 solid top 4 D

I think Campbell and a first would be pretty reasonable.

A first is the extremely low end of the price just to dump Campbell's contract, you're definitely not getting anything of value along with that.

I debate that. He can’t be the best player on the team, but as the team’s 4th to 6th best fwd, he would flourish. And he is huge. Hard to find big centres like him.

Baby steps. Dump Campbell now. Bring in a guy like Hertl. Then dump nurse to pay drai in a year or two.

Although you are probably right, the oilers will need to get creative to do that anyways. Might as well load up for the next two years.

And yes, this top 9 would be tough to beat. Hertl is an untapped commodity rn imo. Put him around some good players and watch him go off.

and then the contract enters the conversation - the fourth best forward on a team can't be getting north of $8M for seven years, taking the player to the age of 36 and have strong value.

Sure, but in 5 years, the cap should be around 100 million, if not higher. 8 million for a 2C is not entirely an anchor.

And who cares. Win now. Deal with that later.

find a comp of a team doing that. it doesn't really happen.

the argument of, "oh sure the cap will go up," just doesn't hold water, and isn't a reason for taking on a bad long-term deal.

The cap will go up, so idk why that doesn’t hold water, the only reason it hasn’t elevated is cause of Covid. 8m for an elite 2C is a reasonable price.

Plus, to get rid of Campbell for a good player is a big part of this, and that has a lot of value in itself.

Comparable buys? Tough to say because teams don’t trade good, controllable players often. But a JT miller rings a bell somewhat. The contract might not be good in 2028, but I think it’s pretty good till about then.

I think we are downplaying how good a Hertl will be on a team like the Oilers rn. They’d be tough to matchup with.

wasn't JT miller traded at like 25 or 26 with three years left? hardly a comparable.

players like Hertl don't get moved because teams don't want to pay to take on that kind of risk.

Listen, the guy is north of 30, at an age where most forwards start the decline, and kind of frequently fall off a cliff to buyout territory (and i believe his contract is really hard to buy out). He gets an absurd amount of ice time, and the production isn't there to match. He's 323rd in the NHL in points/60. probably not exactly fair, so lets refine to guys that get 14+ minutes at 5 on 5. not a ton of those, 59 forwards to be exact. he ranks 50th! that's not good. two of those guys after him have combined for three total games.

With most players, they're very underpaid on their first two contracts, and at the end, they get the big ticket UFA deal, and the last few years look bad, sometimes really bad. No team is going to say, "congrats, you got all the good years. we'll pay you to give us the bad ones!"

it just isn't really a thing.

Hertl has several good years ahead of him.

Regardless, a big part of this is getting rid of Campbell, who has a worse contract than Hertl all day.

For the Oilers, trading Foegele and Campbell’s cap hits for Hertl’s is a good deal.

that is your guess, and it would buck most NHL trends. Its certainly more likely than not that his play will deteriorate faster than the cap goes up from a contract perspective, so it likely won't get any better.

campbell's contract is worse, but at least its four years, not seven. yes, i'm in agreement. Foegele and Campbell for Hertl would be a good deal for edmonton.

Are you trying to win the cup before 29 and 97 get out of town or manage the salary cap in 6 yrs time?

Hertl made the all star team.
Campbell cant stop a beach ball in the AHL

1. i don't give a crap about if edmonton wins a cup
2. managing the cap and trying to win a cup go hand in hand.
