Bjorkstrand, Juulsen, Gaunce and Galchenyuk might be enough to trade for one of Ovechkin and Backstrom, but not both. That leaves the other going for Byron, Jenner, Calvert, and a 2nd. I like the UFA signings, and I like that you're going for an overall balanced lineup. But I think the Caps just need to find a way to add one potentially elite center to keep contending this year. As for next year, they need to get a handle on their salary cap management approach. If they had any idea what they'd be spending on RFA's this summer, they could easily have maneuvered around the expansion draft to keep Johansson, and add another free agent forward or two, and thereby maintain the same sort of scoring balance you're talking about. They need to hire a few intelligent people to just simply take care of salary cap predictions, rfa pre-negotiations, and scouting other teams' potential UFAs. But great players are the hardest to find, and the hardest to replace. I don't know that the Caps are ready to blow this up, yet, or that they would take back so many veterans, if they are.
