Description
I thought it'd be a nice stroll down memory lane to revisit some of the impactful trades made by penguins FO since the 2017 cup.

Of course a lot of these trades can be classified as a GM/FO attempting to keep contending for cups, and they were. However, a lot of fans forget how much these trades truly impacted the future of the team and shows where they are today.

While obviously the penguins (or any team) can't keep every single player it shows that they moves on from various solid players (McCann, Matheson, Marino Addison, Gustavsson) for generally worse players. (yes some of those players were prospects).

I think it shows the toll a team pays for trying to continue to contend for multiple years after cup success and how it's really put them in a bad place in the modern build of the team.

Rutherford was a great GM and helped shape the back to back team, he also then helped run the team into the ground with various moves and Hextall picked up where Rutherford left off.

I will be curious to watch what Dubas does in his Tenure.

This was a god awful trade by Hextall it also then factored into the EK trade so this trade had a ripple.

MTL
    Penguins Got Petry and Poehling.

This trade was in July of 2022, both players are already gone from the penguins.

Matheson was doing well in Pittsburgh and there was no reason to get older at the position while also taking on more cap.
This trade also had future impact on the EK Trade

    Détails additionnels:
Another trade that made no sense at all.

Marino was and is a young defenseman that was playing well and on a very team friendly deal.

Hextall wanted an old guy in petry over Marino.

This is the Rakell Trade at the 2022 deadline. Hextall sent a 2nd, Dominik Simon ZAR and an AHL player, this was actually a good trade for the penguins.

      Détails additionnels:
At the time this trade was fine. TDL of 2021, Kings retained 50%

Carter made an immediately impact in that season and in the playoffs that season.

Everything went south however when Hextall resigned him.

      1. Gruden, Jonathan
      Détails additionnels:
This was the Matt Murray trade. In Hindsight this was a good trade by Rutherford. Murray has had a lot of unfortunate luck since leaving Pittsburgh and the 2nd rounder received with Gruden turned into Joel Blomqvist who is a good goalie prospect.

Penguins sent Hornqvist to florida for Sceviour and Mike Matheson.

Losing Hornqvist was definitely tough, he brought a lot to the team but he was declining in play and that's since become obvious.

Tough trade from a fan standpoint, but good from a front office standpoint (Until Hextall sent Matheson packing)

Probably the worst trade in rutherfords tenure imo.

Penguins sent a 2020 1st round pick, Filip Hallander (who they later got back and then went to Sweden) an AHLer and Evan Rodrigues to Toronto for Kasperi Kapanen, Pontus Aberg (went to Europe that season) and Jesper Lindgren (went to Europe that season)

Just an overall terrible trade from Rutherford. Kapanen never paned out and they lost Erod and a 1st.

            2020 trade for Marleau

Pens send a 2rd to SJS for Marleau.

He played 8 regular season games notching 2 points (1G 1A) and 4 playoff games with 0 points.

Complete waste of a 3rd that could've been more wisely utilized.

              Jason Zucker trade in 2020.

I like Zucker a lot, he's a solid player and a great locker room guy, but the penguins gave up a 2021 1st, Calen Addison and Alex Galchenyuk (yikes) for Zucker.

It's a good trade for the penguins, it didn't pan out but wasn't due to zucker. Yes he had injury issues but when healthy he was good.

However, losing a 1st and Addison is tough looking back on things.

I really liked this trade back in 2019 and at the time thought it was one that was going to help them get back to the cup.

Nick Bjugstad and Jared McCann from the panthers for a 2nd, 2 4th, Riley Sheahan and Derick Brassard.

Great trade that improved the over all middle/bottom six.

Pens sent Daniel Sprong to ANA for Marcus Pettersson.

Easily one of Rutherfords better trades as Pettersson has turned into one of the top defensive defensemen in the league.

This is probably top three worst JR trades, the worst is next.

Pens Acquired Derick Brassard from Ottawa

Ottawa received Ian Cole, Filip Gustavsson a 1st and a 3rd.

                    Vegas Receives Ryan Reaves.

Brassard was a complete bust. 54 games and 23 points, 4 playoff points in 12 games, and the pens lost a 1st, 3rd and Gustavsson who is now a very good Goalie in the league.

As mentioned, Rutherfords absolute WORST trade.... their 2017 1st round pick and Oskar Sundqvist for Ryan Reaves and a 2017 2nd.

Now i know the picks weren't far apart (31 to 51) but there was absolutely no reason for the penguins to make this trade in the first place. Rutherford "wanted protection" for the team even though we've watched that style of play continue to die in the league.

I was just thinking about McCann trade the other day. I was looking back at the expansion draft and as a Wings fan I was kind of wondering why Yzerman didn't make a move for McCann or one of the other forwards I thought were going to get picked. We had two forward spots we could have easily used for better players.

Rutherford’s worst was moving Sundqvist followed closely by the Marleau deal. I loved the Brassard deal at the time and I can’t knock him for that trade. It looked like a slam dunk. The Carter trade was a good one for us at the time. The mistake was in extending him. Rakell was the best move the previous awful regime made. Everything else was an outright disaster. Marino and McCann traded decimated this team and we still are paying for them now.

Very fair, it made sense at the time, but still felt slightly overpaid...

It's really unfortunate to look back at because I feel a lot of fans today are talking about how Dubas is ruining what's left of the core, but in reality they could've had such a strong team, and quite frankly another cup (maybe two) IMO.

Obviously they wouldn't have been able to keep everyone, but could've had something like this for the current year

                      Jake-Sid-Rakell
                      McCann-Geno-Rust
                      empty-empty-empty
                      DOC-Eller-Acciari

                      Matheson-Letang
                      Pettersson-Marino
                      Ludvig-Ruhwedel
                      POK

                      Jarry
                      Nedeljkovic

Leaving $10.5M for a third line and 13th forward... that would be pretty great.

But hey, glad Hextall got rid of them all.
