INTRODUCTION
I’m trying to create International rosters with geographical rearrangements to make the rosters more competitive. If the player was not born in the country that he represents at the international level, I chose the province/state where the player grew up (ex: Batherson, Kaliyev, Couturier, Chychrun, etc.). If the player was born in the country that he represents, I went with the birth place regardless of where they grew up (ex: Hughes brothers, Tkachuk brothers, Tage Thompson, etc.)
US NORTHERN MIDWEST: Iowa (IA), Michigan (MI), Minnesota (MN), Nebraska (NE), North Dakota (ND), South Dakota (SD), Wisconsin (WI)
US SOUTH + SOUTHERN MIDWEST : Alabama (AL), Arkansas (AR), Florida (FL), Georgia (GA), Illinois (IL), Indiana (IN), Kansas (KS), Kentucky (KY), Louisiana (LA), Mississippi (MS), Missouri (MO), North Carolina (NC), Ohio (OH), Oklahoma (OK), South Carolina (SC), Tennessee (TN), Texas (TX), Virginia (VA), West Virginia (WV)
US NORTHEAST: Connecticut (CT), Delaware (DE), District of Columbia (DC), Maine (ME), Massachusetts (MA), New Hampshire (NH), New Jersey (NJ), New York (NY), Pennsylvania (PA), Rhode Island (RI), Vermont (VT)
US WEST: Alaska (AK), Arizona (AZ), California (CA), Colorado (CO), Hawaii (HI) Idaho (ID), Montana (MT), Nevada (NV), New Mexico (NM), Oregon (OR), Utah (UT), Washington (WA), Wyoming (WY)
WESTERN CANADA: Alberta (AB), British Columbia (BC), Manitoba (MB), Northwest Territories (NT), Saskatchewan (SK), Yukon (YT)
ONTARIO
EASTERN CANADA: New Brunswick (NB), Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Nova Scotia (NS), Prince Edward Island (PE), Québec (QC)
ALPINE COUNTRIES: Austria, France, Germany, Slovenia, Switzerland
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible, the player must have played at least half their team’s games in either season (2022-23 or 2023-24). If the player didn’t play half their team’s games in one season, they are assumed to have had the same season in the other.
METHODOLOGY
In order to minimize biases as much as possible, I employed a methodology based on advanced statistics, among other things. Only the statistics from this season and the last season matter, with a greater weighting for the current season. It's imperfect, but I thoroughly enjoyed creating the whole thing. If your favorite player from your favorite team isn’t too low or not included at all, go yell at clouds.
