LOL, no chance Calgary does that!

Samsonov for Markstrom maybe but not with retention on Marky.

I don't think I'd go that far. Markstrom has term and his number is quite large for someone who's so inconsistent. At least it gets a good chunk of one of many bloated contracts off the books. Truthfully, I just don't think Calgary needs or wants another goalie (I realize this is my own trade - I didn't say it was good).

On the other hand, William Nylander is one of the best players in the league right now and is capable of sustaining that level of play. He's also what Calgary seems to need to get Hub going - a winger who can shoot, score, and skate both with help and by themselves (in case Hub continues to suck).

On the retention front, keep in mind the trade proposes retention for Nylander as well to make the money work and he's the best player in the deal by a mile. You have to give up some value and that's Anderson and retention on Markstrom, who we probably don't need either. The first is a top up and the second may be where it goes overboard.

There's absolutely no way Calgary trades Andersson who isn't being shopped in the first place.

They won't be trading valuable assets for an expensive rental either. Willy would have to come with a long term extension but Andersson still wouldn't be on the table. Hanifin and/or Tanev sure maybe even Weegar but definitely not Andersson.

And no we don't really want a goalie coming back but can live with a goalie like Samsonov who makes less money and is a pending UFA.

If Toronto called up Calgary and said they'd trade Nylander and he wants to sign a long term extension with them, Calgary would 100% trade Andersson. He isn't being shopped but it's not like he's untouchable. I doubt Nylander would be willing to do that so it's a moot point anyways.

Yeah, you're both right here. Nylander likely doesn't want anything Calgary but I would be surprised if they wouldn't send Anderson back if he were to sign long-term bc you aren't getting Nylander for nothing. But like MoxNix said, Calgary has a lot of UFA defencemen and they're not focused on trading good (content) players on good contracts at the moment.

It's a hypothetical trade, not an expected one. But as a leaf fan, I don't want Zadorov (too much money for a bottom pairing UFA who doesn't kill penalties and may end up in TO next year through free agency), I don't want Tanev (essentially paying to acquire a second TJ Brodie but older), and I don't see a need for Hanifin who is Morgan Rielly 2.0 and will cost too much for a second pairing LD.

Leafs need a 1st or 2nd pair D that can play solid defence and hopefully kill penalties.
