Description

Toffoli -- He is not a lock for extension, but could certainly happen. Toffoli will turn 32 in April. Comps for him would be...

-- Alex Killorn: $6.250m x 4 years (33.8 years old at signing)
-- Bryan Rust: $5.125m x 6 years (30.0)
-- Reilly Smith: $5m x 3 years (31.3)
-- Palmieri: $5m x 4 years (30.6)
-- Zuccarello: $6m x 5 years (31.8)

So I signed him to $5.5m x 3 year deal (although he may get that hairy 4th year)

New Kids -- On the trajectory they are on, there is a chance Josh Filmon and/or Lenny Hameenaho could make team in October 2024. Filmon is still in juniors, but attended NJD camp and really impressed this year. Hameenaho was our top 2023 pick and has tearing it up for both club in Liiga and U20 national team.

Moving a forward -- In this scenario, we could move someone for upgrade elsewhere in lineup (3LD? Goalie?) Up until July 1, 2024, we only have three guys that have any sort of trade protection (Dougie, Palat and Haula). But starting next season, we are adding five more guys to that list (Nico, Timo, Bratt, Siegs, Marino). Not that we would trade any of them. And if you take Jack and any recent signings off table...then only forwards left would be Holtz, Bastian and Lazar.

What would you do here? (the most obvious scenario would be to let Toffoli walk, but imagine he gets extended during 2023-24 season).

1. Demote the kids (Filmon and Hameenaho) who are ready and can help team
2. Trade a winger to upgrade a dman
3. Trade a winger to upgrade goalie
4. Pull a Dorian and make Mercer sit a year

I think its probably #1...but if we could package Bastian or Lazar with some futures for a dependable dman...that would work.

There is next to zero chance that either of those players make the team next fall. Hameenaho might not even be a good enough skater for the AHL, nevermind the NHL, and Filmon is super raw and looked awful in dev camp, the preseason, and his AHL stint.

Disagree. There is no room for those 2. Unless Filmon is a 4th liner. You dont know, You also overpaid Schmid, Canes gave pytor 2m and thats what schmid will get they are similar. Congratz on just not making this team better all you did was resign everyone, instead of getting new players.

If Schmid signs that, I won’t complain. But I think NJD would want one more shot as RFA.

As for ‘getting new players’…that was kind of the purpose of the post…who do we move and for whom?

Liiga is the slowest major Euro league and he still looks slow. His stride is clunky and he lacks any sort of agility. He will not be able to make the NHL without AHL time to ease the transition.

As for Filmon, I don't understand how anyone can watch him, especially in his pro games, and come to any conclusion other than that he isn't ready. He needs to bulk, and he also needs an AHL stint.

Even Casey will need AHL time, there's no way Filmon or Hameenaho don't.

I never said that…but his stock is certainly on the rise after his camp, so wouldn’t rule anything out either.

He is really just a prop here to force surplus of winger scenario. Put Clarke, Tyce in his place.
