I don't dislike the trade, except the Caps pick might be bordering on top 10, which would make it too risky to give up even if losing Mantha's cap hit. He'll be gone at season's end anyway.

But other than that, good for the Hawks, and the Canucks can shop for a defenceman later with the added cap space. Although... eh, retaining 30% for 3 years is kinda iffy. Actually maybe not, depending on the situation.

I should have added that Washington’s 1st would be top ten protected. Also, with respect to the Canucks retaining 30% on Garland, that was something I heard either on the 32 Thoughts or Seravelli’s podcast that they were willing to do to help finalize a deal.

Washington's 1st this year is not in play. Garland isn't a season-changer for the Caps.
