And I like Aho, I don't like $3mil for a 3rd pairing D. Avs are probably looking for a trade or waiver claim at LD this year that they can either extend or already has term thru next season that can replace JJ this year and take the job next year.

Toews can easily get $8,000,000 per long term on the open market, No reason for him to take less from Colorado.

He said at media day that he'd take less to stay. I think this is a little TOO less but I wouldn't be surprised with $6.5-7 if he gets the 8th year.

8 x $7,000,000 i could see, But the OPs signing is definitely a tad too low.

Here's why this is a perfectly plausible scenario:

It's unlikely anyone is signing him for more than 6 years as a UFA at his age; it's practically unheard of to sign a D (or any player, for that matter) to a long-term, expensive deal after they turn 30 and he'll be halfway to 31 when next season starts. If he got $9Mx6 in UFA, that's $54M total; $6.25Mx8 is $50M total so that's the discount to stay in a familiar, winning situation. $7-8M is too high for the Avs, especially at 7-8 years. To me, this is the deal; I'd maybe go to $6.5 which is $52M total. If someone offered him $8Mx7 in UFA (as you suggest), that's $56M in total so still a $4M discount. Structure and trade protection would have to be heavily negotiated as well but the total compensation is pretty damn close; if they offer him a lot of money in signing bonuses, give him the trade protection he wants and give him the 8th year, that could seal the deal if he's serious about taking a discount to stay. $4M left on the table isn't anything to sniff at and it isn't my money but guys do stuff like this all the time to be in a situation they prefer.
