Its the short term that every player wants now. Bouchard got the type of deal UFA wants, today!
The 2 years lines up with the cap increasing. Exactly why Orlov, Gavrikov wanted 2 year deals despite having endless options in free agency.
These guys easily make it back and then some with the cap increase by 5% annually.
Oilers were much better off going long term with Bouchard at 6M AAV now they might be faced with paying him 9M AAV plus in 2025. But this is an ALL IN move. Players will be lost in 2025 now instead of this season to fit in salary. That is what salary cap flexibility means in the end.

Edmonton traded cap flexibility for having all their key players locked up for term on GREAT deals (all except for Nurse and Campbell).
