If the goal was select Mr. Mathews as you suggested, the Leafs would not have traded 5 AHLers for a NHLer in Grabner. If the Leafs goals was to finish last as hinted they would not have signed any of the PTOs and just gone with not qualified AHLers. It's just silly to suggest that the Leafs are trying to finish as poorly as possible.

Actually these PTO contracts and Grabner would be trade pieces at the deadline

Agree that some expiring contracts will be traded at the deadline, (if the Leafs aren't in playoff contention. My disagreement with Gallant and others is that the Leafs are tanking so they get a better draft selection. If they were tanking they would from day 1 be using non NHLers, instead of acquiring Grabner, Arcobello, Glencross, Fraser, Boyes, and Setoguchi. Gee, if they were really tanking they would not have hired Babcock.

I would rather keep JVR (a player who is on an amazing contract for his absolute prime years) than trade him for a very late 2017 1st and a player who if he fully fulfills his potential will be like JVR or he could completely bust. I think a better return could be had elsewhere.

I also would never retain on Dion, especially for a 2nd, a meh prospect and an AHLer.
Also you can retain on 4 players
