OTT cant get much for him as they're in a bind. DET has leverage bc he wants to go there and he is an RFA and doesn't want to sign for OTT and OTT cant afford him so they're kinda screwed. Also not many teams can afford him either without moving other players

That's just not true. Worst case, hold on until the deadline and get a pretty legit haul for him from a playoff team.

The whole issue is he doesn't want to play for Ottawa. You say keep him until the deadline but if he doesn't want to sign for you then what? Were back in the same situation. Not only does he not have a contract he doesn't want to play so its 2 big binds for OTT. and if he somehow signs OTT will be over cap. Im not saying the above trade would be enough I think Valeno and a 1st should be enough.
