Like the Petry - Ellis Idea. Philly gets a stop gap for the next two years, and the pens take on the Ellis contract and just spend the extra money

That flyer deal is interesting... I was reading that philly doesn't want to spend assets to move him either, so this would make sense. Only problem is I can't see either team doing a trade together haha although it would benefit both teams.

I don't think that Flyers deal gets done for no picks or prospects coming back. Cap space is a rare commodity and is expensive, I could see someone giving us a large contract that has tops 2 years on it (like Petry) at the TDL or even next summer, but there would have to be a pick or two included. We're not just gonna do you a favor and take a contract, allow you to open up all that cap space, without picks coming back.

We don't need a stop gap, we'd prefer to not get better on the back end to have another high pick next year. Makes no sense unless we are getting picks to go with it.

All three of these trades are brutal but the Sharks one is especially horrible. Pittsburgh fans have to stop viewing trading Granlund as doing the other team a favor. Even with a fraction retained, he's not a positive addition to any team. And you certainly are not going to get SJ to retain 4.5 for multiple years for a 1st round pick and scraps

It is literally the same money in as going out. You still have to pay the guy on LTIR actual money. It is a business after all and you are saving two years of dead money. Cap space is not a thing Philly needs currently as you said yourself that they are not trying to compete. Petry alone will not move the needle enough to effect where the team ultimately finishes. And say he does play well... you can trade him for those precious picks you were just talking about.

If and when he does get moved whether it is to Pittsburgh or somewhere else, the return is not going to look any better that that. SJ will have to take money back to get almost any trade to work, especially since EK can essentially hand pick where he wants to go. In this trade, they are saving $1M in the short term and $7M after 2 years while also receiving a 1st and a couple of prospects. What exactly do you expect to see as a return?

If you want them to retain 4.5mil it's going to cost you Guentzel, O'Connor, Joseph, and a 1st

You can't look at it like "San Jose is saving X" .. You have to look at it like San Jose is paying X in dead money each year, and it needs to be worth their while

agree SJ will have to pony up but it'll probably be around 3m retained. Don't think the owner is going to let Grier retain more
also a trade with PIT is tough because of the depleted prospect pool I think you're sending SJ more picks than prospects
and I think they'll rather sit on Karlsson in SJ than trade him if the return isn't good enough to justify shipping him. They'll bring guys in to get near the cap limit to pretend they are giving Karlsson a supporting cast. This is because SJ needs to sell tickets and Karlsson is fun to watch
